.. is . A new one to me, this celebration, but since I've known Reese, every year I have forgotten and promised I would never forget again.
This year, I have finally got it together and ordered turkey and all that crap, fizzy wine, the works.
Any one else here have the vaguest idea about Thanksgiving? I could do with some pointers, TBH.
Hi Vix, I've only experienced one Thanksgiving, and apart from the turkey and stuff, it was just an excuse to sit around with family and talk... and watch the American Football on TV if anyone was interested. On the food side the only thing that struck me was pumpkin pie - odd, not unpleasant, but loaded up on cinnamon and nutmeg if I remember rightly. No use I know, but hey, its all I can remember - I was drinking ;)
Fuckity fuck! Pumpkin pie!!! I bet I can't get a pumpkin for love nor money, now.
mad
Pumpkin pie is a must - but be warned it's about the sweetest thing you can taste and a definate no, no for anyone trying to shift a few excess pounds!
Mrs RSAB2 xxx
Pecan Pie is a traditional alternative smile
Tell him your pussy turns into a pumpkin at midnight, and he can play 'peter the pumpkin eater' ??
Just adding my two-penneth here.....
I have the pleasure each year to travel to Houston at least once a year with work and I stay at a colleagues house, as such I'm treated very much as part of the family and I love it !
Two years ago they had friends and family over from Holland while I was there and they held a thanksgiving. This event is basically a lot of people, food and drink (a lot of people bought their own ready prepared dishes which I understand was aranged in advance). However the thing I remember most was just before the meal. We all held hands and formed a circle and each person took it in turn to say what they felt they had to be thankful for in the past year, even the children joined in.
I have mixed feelings about this. One the one hand it was heartwarming and I believe geniunely felt, (once you realise that when an American says to "have a nice day" they geniunely mean it you'll know what I mean ! On the other it was quite a glib display of religious emotion, almost sickening especially for a non-believer like me.
I was thrown in at the deep end as my friend told me nothing of this beforehand but then I do like to be tested from time to time !
So to sum up, it's a big indoor barbecue with minor religious overtones or Christmas without the gifts. Take a sick bag - pumpkin pie is quite sweet but also quite bland !
Enjoy !

Well, Straighteight, as this is just me, trying to make him indoors feel at home (although he is at home here, now) Just needed to see if I had missed out anything essential. Turns out I have! Pumpkin pie. Will make one if I can find a pumpkin.
Everything else will be distinctly un-American. And I give thanks for that.
Here here Vix, I (we) salute you !

PS Little bird tells me you ride a Harley too !
There was a recipe for pumpkin pie in one of the sundays this week. They recommended using tinned pumpkin, i think it was made by Libbys might be worth seeing if you can get that in the shops, might be less gooey than a real pumpkin, although i guess getting gooey can be fun!!!!
Key lime pie is lovely and available ready made here as is Pecan pie
Thx all... am on the scout about for tinned pumpkin, today. Trouble is, there are no 'big' shops here, just nice little local traders... when I say 'here', the nearest of those is 5 mi away.
Am not holding out much hope, but I s'pose I could treck into the nearest real town to find some.
*sigh* Personally, I hate pumpkin. Even more so, now.
Come in, lie down on ze couch. Now, vot zeems to be ze problem?
