It the meal was that bad - you are quite within your rights to only pay for what you feel it was worth. Ie if the veg was inedible - tell the waitress/er and ask them to refer the matter to the chef. If things are not made right - then deduct the cost of the veg from the bill. That is a legitimate thing to do.
This said - even if the meal was bad but the waiting on staff went out of their way to be helpful - why not tip them? (You do have to make sure that tip does not go into a pot though!)

I always tip roughly 10% of the bill. If I have a meal and it's bad for whatever reason I send it back lol, it's not the waiters' fault if the steak is raw :P
I have worked as a waitress and it's a thankless job generally with low wages, a lot of waiting staff rely on tips to make up their pay packets ;) (just think of the scene in Reservoir Dogs where Mr Pink doesn't want to tip rotflmao )

edit :
Nice Guy Eddie: C'mon, throw in a buck!
Mr. Pink: Uh-uh, I don't tip.
Nice Guy Eddie: You don't tip?
Mr. Pink: Nah, I don't believe in it.
Nice Guy Eddie: You don't believe in tipping?
Mr. Blue: You know what these chicks make? They make shit.
Mr. Pink: Don't give me that. She don't make enough money that she can quit.
Nice Guy Eddie: I don't even know a fucking Jew who'd have the balls to say that. Let me get this straight: you don't ever tip?
Mr. Pink: I don't tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them something a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doing their job.
Mr. Blue: Hey, our girl was nice.
Mr. Pink: She was okay. She wasn't anything special.
Mr. Blue: What's special? Take you in the back and suck your dick?
Nice Guy Eddie: I'd go over twelve percent for that
i would have called the owner, maitre D or restuarant manager and politely and quietly explained the problem
most people are reasonable if explained to decently

Perhaps we should just stick to tipping the velvet!!

rotflmao :giggle:
Sorry..... I'll get back in my box now
Oh is that the time ?? bolt
Why do we tip though.....i know longer tip the barber anymore as it is £10 for a hair cut now and i never tip taxi drivers as they are expensive should start paying better wages to staff so they should not be relying on tips!......

very good balance view....exceptions to this are
the paper boy
the postie
the bin men
all at christmas
I always think tipping is a personal thanks to the waiting staff. If they have been friendly then I will tip. But I allways check that they havent added a service charge first. That really does annoy me. Did anyone see the HSBC add where they say tipping in Iceland is classed as rude. Am tempted to go there just to see if it is lol
But why do we tip just certain people.....the woman at the checkout was very nice to you and helped you packed your shopping,do you tip her?....no you don't.

Dave good point mate. i tip cab drivers and the hairdresser but they take all the money anyway lol so i am paying them for thier time, and tipping as well weird
We generally tip in what is senerally lower paid front line service industry jobs, where we get a personal service from someone, ie bar staff, wait staff etc.
I worked for 7 years behind bar in a club earning minimum wage, but was very good at it and loved the job, I always made good tips because of the personal service I provided, for going over and byond what was neccessary to the role, be it an extra smile, replacing drinks that were spilled, remember a previous round ect.
I nearly always tip 15% of the bill n restaurants, and 50p - £1 in bars, the only exception is if the service from the waiting /bar staff has been bad.
Tipping is such a minefield! lol
I tip a lot less than I used to! I no longer tip my hairdresser given how much her services cost but always tip the junior who does the wash/condition/making coffee, I do tip waiting staff in bars and restaurants if service is good (can't remember the last time it was bad anywhere to be honest!) but rarely tip for cabs now.
On holiday I usually leave a tip for the housekeeping staff but one of the things that really annoys me is tipping bar staff or the guys who hail cabs at hotels because they're not really doing a lot - tipping is excessive in USA imho, it may only be a dollar here and there but it's surprising how it adds up!
I agree regarding your meal, complain and send it back in future, and never pay for service that has been added to the bill unless you're happy that you got service worth 12.5-15% of the bill! I really dislike this practice!!
Cover charges for bars, something else that gets up my nose!! I went out in Watford with some friends a while ago and a bar wanted to charge just to get in to queue for god knows how long for a drink, it's just Watford fgs!!
Am going for a small lie down now biggrin

And there lies the problem with tipping, whilst we continue to do so, wages will remain we really want waiting staff etc to be dependant on what is effectively charity?
On principle I only tip if the service is exceptional, or if the waiter has a nice bum!!!
A gf of mine is a waitress on a weekend at a restaraunt. Anything they make in tips is put into a pot which is shared out at the end of the month by the owner. They never get what they are supossed to and if they complain the owner replies "if your not happy find another job". Now if i tip i would expect it to go to the person i tipped no exceptions. Things like this make me mad They all need there jobs so keep there mouths shut. Situations like this would stop me from tipping !
Yes, it would be nice if the tipped person gets it but almost all restaurants pool tips!

Well i think it is bad practice especially if the tips arent going where there intended to !
True but if you work at a restaurant where the Matre d' isn't fair in their allocations, some wait staff will get only the small tables to wait meaning they could also lose out on a decent share of the tips just because they got the worst tables....there is some sense behind the tips pooling but as with a lot of team rewards, people who don't deserve it get a share anyway!
maybe im wrong but are we the only country that does not have to tip or where tipping is not normal practise.
Last week in the Indian my mate told the waiter the food was great the service was great and he had served us very well. BUt because his boss had been hanging around the table all night and making us hurry our meal he was now going to miss out on the £10 tipp he would have got.
The waiter still treated us well, the boss had the look of rage on his face.
I wondered after if the waiter wold have ever got the tip anyway even if we had put the tenner in his hand.
I tip the Barber, tell the barmaid to get one for herself, and thats is everyone else can fight for a better wages if they want more money.
My pay aint great anyway why should i give it away.
about 5 years ago when i was went for a job as a chamber maid at weekends i was told by the owner if any tip is left in the room i was not to keep it but hand it in to the owner.
i thought bloody nerve, and did think well how would they know, they proceded to tell me they had sacked the last girl as she did not declare a tip.
how did they know, they woukd sometimes go into the room first leave a couple of quid and if the chambermaid didnt own up to it they knew she was lying.
some people cant affroed to find a better job for more money though.
xx lou xx
oh i got sacked cuse my dad died and i needed the weekend off .
I only tip the paperboy in this country but do tip when I go on holiday
WellI for one don't suffer fools gladly, If I recieve poor service, then I tip poorly(usually by suggesting they don't back 3 legged horses in the national)
Funny....we were talking about Cow Tipping int he pub tonight....then I saw this. Ummmmm not the same kind of tipping methinx  lol
I worked as a waiter for about a year. I worked in a pizza/burger bar/restaurant type place and an exclusive Egon Ronay type. Tipping is fairly common in a burger bar. But the restaurant owner can and often does keep the tips. So the waiters have to return the tips to the owners.
You rarely get a tip in an expensive restaurant. The clients are wealthy. They stay wealthy because they don't give away their money. Especially not to waiters.
The kind of incidents of complaint we have read about usually occur in places that have fixed meals and menus and a fast paced system. So they can't usually cater for any individuality very well.
Its unfair to blame the waiters for the chef's work. You should get the maitre'd or manager to sort it out.
I tip when I eat in a familiar family owned restaurant and when a waiter or waitress has been especially attentive and helpful.
I used to tip as standard, just lately though I have come to the conclusion that I work harder when I goto a restaurant than the waiters. It drives me crazy how hard it is to get there attention when you require a drink, bill etc. At my usual haunt, they seem to go out there way to avoid eye contact! However like many of you, when I do recieve really good service, then I'm happy to reward, making sure they recieve it personally.

I hate it when am amount is automatically added to the bill for a tip sometimes ---I don't believe it all goes to the staff - I always refuse to pay such amounts and have it deducted - in general I don't agree with tipping though I do give tips from time to time - especialy to women in very tight short skirts with black stockings and...........anyway I feel people should be paid a decent wage so they did not have to depend on tips.. in the past I used to leave a card as a tip saying - join a trade union - demand a living wage!

Personally I would have complained and sent the food back. This is something I have done countless times and even gone to the point of tipping a full plate onto a waitresses serving tray and saying now go and get me a hot meal exactly as I have ordered it.
I had ordered a meal minus peas (which I cannot stand- the smell of them alone makes me feel very sick) they sent it out with peas - so it got sent back. They removed the peas rearranged the food on the plate thinking they could get away with that. They ahd missed half a dozen which they had moved some brocolli onto.
I asked for the manager, pulled a waitress to the table. Told her to lift her tray and then proceded to tip the contents of my plate over the tray and said "now you cant really give me back the same crap for a third time - either do the food as asked for or I don't pay the bill"
10 minutes later all the food was replaced cooked from fresh just as requested - when I went to pay - my payment was refused and a £10 gift voucher for my local Morrisons was presented to me as way of an apology.
It's always well worth standing up for yourself
Steph biggrin

if i got a really poor meal i`d be more inclined to walk out rather than keep sending it back...........dont fancy the taste of chef spit much :fuckinghell:
What about these men who take over the toilets in pubs and clubs and pester you into freshening up!......if i'm having a night out i could go to the toilet a good few times and you find these guys in there trying to spray you with smellies when you wash your hands.......they're not even employed by these pubs sometimes.......and who wants to buy a lollypop and expect to give a pound tip!!
