me personally i can't sleep when its so quiet.
my remedy is to laod my stereo with about 30 tracks of soft music, and just keep the volume low ( don't want to keep teh neighbours up).
that way i can relax as i listen and eventually i get to sleep, after track 20 has finished playing it activates my alrm clock to wake me up at the prescribed time, with some serious Heavy Punk rock.
sleeping is no problem then its just the waking up part i find difficult then.
and then the worst part is because i overslept. i'm tired again.
(weird i know )

Insomnia is a terrible thing. Which for me is tied to my depression.
I think a regular bedtime routine helps. I read a book before switching the light off. Usually I sleep. If I don't I play simple word games in my head. Alphabetical list of cities, animals anything really. I think this helps me keep out the worries of the day and truely I don't often get past M or N.
If this doesn't work I get up. sad I cover the mattress to keep the bed warm and I go down stairs. I find a mindless task to keep me occupied for 10-15 minutes then go back to bed. In this time I have cooled down and the bed is still warm and that usually works.
If all of these fail I just get up and do stuff. What's the point of lying in bed wide awake. I don't want my body to associate bed with not sleeping so if I'm awake I'm awake and I do things. biggrin

I've suffered with insomnia for years and have tried all of the above a million times over with varying degrees of success.
When all else fails, I just get back out of bed and go and do something. Fighting it makes it worse - go with it.

I agree, if you lay there trying to sleep it makes it worse. I have had bouts of insomnia for as long as I can remember. I would go to bed and lie awake for 2 hours before falling asleep and wake up a few hours later. That was until I just took a relaxed view on sleep and realised that I just don’t sleep the ‘normal’ 7-8 hours a night like most people. I now know that 5 hours most nights and 6 hour some nights is fine (though about once a week I will sleep 3-4 hours). I suppose everyone is different.
If I masturbate I become more lively, then can’t sleep for ages! But most men I sleep with seem to zonk out straight afterwards so maybe a gender thing (or just a bex thing lol)

When a lady commented on the size of Wellington's camp bed, saying "It is not big enough to turn over in."
Wellington replied "Madam, if I can not sleep I get up."

Never thought I would say that.
Anyway, aside from the obvious, how in the world do you make yourself sleepy when you are not?
Any suggestions?
I have tried herbal tea, masturbating, reading and watching cricket.
Next?

Think of the puppies Abilene, you can do it!!
Here is help for those who are tired, but can not sleep for their head being full of worldly concerns.
Fill your head with something else. Find something that needs control and concentration. I know someone who would run the Japanese tea ceremony through their mind. Visualizing each action, each turn of the cup. Then when they had returned the cup to rest they were also, and off to sleep they went.
Another, would dismantle, clean and reassemble an item.
Try it.
