I am aware that not all of us are medical personnel so I understand that any opinions given will be just that.
We are advised to use condoms when having penetrative sex both anal and vaginal in order to prevent the spread of sexully transmitted diseases but I do not hear much about using a condom during oral sex.
Does swallowing semen carry the same risks as the sharing of bodily fluids during anal and vaginal sex?
Is it something that is often discussed as much as it should be and if not, then why is it not?
Does swallowing a woman's juices during oral sex carry the same risks or any risks?

STD's can be transmitted through oral sex. Try the links on the left for more info.

swallowing carries no more risk that sucking, once it's in the mouth you've already put yourself at risk because small cuts etc. can quite easily pass on the nasties

penetrative sex does carry a slightly higher risk, but either way it's russian roulette so there's no point assessing which is riskier. either do it, or don't do it, but the smart advice is to use a condom and regularly visit the GUM clinic for testing biggrin
I also think that people tend to ignore safe sex for oral because it's so much less fun when using a condom or barrier, and it tastes awful.

Apparently It is medically accepted that oral sex carries a lower risk due to ones own saliva having something to do with helping to sanitise anything that goes into the mouth. This is not foolproof by any means as we all know. I'm not sure how this sanitising works in truth but I'm sure there is some one here who will enlighten us. When initially meeting someone I disregard this. Personally unless the person is extremely well known to me then I would invariably use a condom. I supose one day we will carry somekind of microchip in our bodies that can be read by the other person with a card of some kind, 2 blips for all clear 3 or more blips and we run like fluck.

sadly that'd be invasion of privacy, the same reason it's unacceptible to tatoo people if they have std's.
Saliva works a bit like stomach acid only less strong so it'll start digesting things in the mouth. the problem being that if you brush your teeth too hard, bite your lip or tonge, cut your lip licking an envelope etc. then there will be a path direct to your bloodstream. as you say, make sure you know someone for a while, and preferably get tested and have them tested (it's free afterall!)

As the others have indicated oral sex and swallowing does provide a risk if somewhat reduced in comparison with straight or anal sex. The risk is reduced becuase the oral orafice is part of the digestive system and as such the acidic / enzyme rich enviroment of the mouth provides a hostile environment for foriegn organisms (not french people), As such it is harder to "catch" dieases this way. However it is important to state that as previously mentioned small cuts or abrasions can increase the risk.

To use roulette as an analogy (quite fitting I think)
anal sex...betting on a single number...satisfying if you win, but 36:1 odds...not good
vaginal sex...betting on a row...better odds
oral sex...odd or even...you'll win more often, but you'll still lose half the time
condom/barrier use...bank...1:1 odds you always get your money back, and have a smug feeling when the gamblers lose...no matter how sorry for them you feel
abstinance...where on earth is the fun in that...if you're still reading then you've missed my point ^up there^
gambling is fun, but you must be prepared for a loss eventually... sad

yup, I'm afraid it's all true
Its an interesting analogy Luce , and we like the sentiment behind it , but just to add a small bit of advise on gambling that me Grandad gave me " Dont bet it if you cant afford to burn it" and bearing in mind the stakes theres only one bet worth placing ( which is im sure what you meant to say )
