Right as some of you know ive lost quite a bit of weight in recent months(6 stone last count!),now im at the stage when things need toning up!
Im desperately trying to get it all in trim for the London Munch and Steves being really good with motivating me.
Trouble is i find nothing more dull than doing sit up after sit up after more sit ups.
Any one got any tips on toning up the stumach and thighs in a more interesting way?
Any help would be very much appreciated i now have given myself a target and am determind to hit it,so pleaseeeee help!

Dont know aboutstomach trimming and toning, i think sit-ups are the best way.........
However for general fitness they say a good sex session is equivalent to a five mile run, so if you'd like some company me or Calista would volunteer to do a marathon or two with you ;)

Cheeky sod!!!!
Clare,
The best way I found was through the Gym, I have no at home motivation to exercise and so joined our local JJB, it costs me about £25 a month and you can use it as many times as you want, they work out a routine for you and our centre also has a swimming pool and jacuzzi. for chiling out as well.

This is really rude but get steve to sit on the end of your situp bench with a hard will motivate you to do more situps.
Seriously, leg raises are good too for the stomach and can be hard though but then again NO PAIN NO GAIN.

There are loads of Abs exercises, but they basically focus round the sit-up principle - there is only so many ways you can tense your stomach muscles after all wink . Try crunches instead of full sit ups. They are quicker and actually work better. Once you get used to those, try "top, middle, bottom" - work it out :haha: :haha: :haha:
What about some kind of toning video? There's loads out there to choose from. They're usually sets of reps so after a set you change to another exercise and go from there. Or maybe something themed, like ty-bo (sp?)
Also try swimming or cycling. These can help although cycling doesn't really do much for stomach muscles unless your dirt jumping lol.
Yoga is good. smile
But then maybe I should practice what I preach! lol

Pilates is great for toning your middle bits.

Is that a Michael Barrymore thing? I suggestion just dont go swimming in his pool lol

Clare you are right. They are the most boring....
But as the stomach muscles are part of your 'core' muscles, they can be toned by toning the rest of the body. Nearly every other excercise you do requires you to tense your tummy muscles so at every opportunity, over exagerate movements.
Carrying shooping for example. Instead of letting the bags hang loosely, lift your arms so there is pressure on your stomach.
Run up stairs instead of walking, or taking the lift.
And hold your tummy muscles tight every time you remember. It's something men do a lot of, expecailly if there are good looking women around.
Try to be conscious of your tummy at all times.
Expert?? No! But I've nearly got a three pack.
Tongue........... completely the wrong end of the stick rolleyes wink
OK, top, middle, bottom................ it's good for your abs and you can do as much or as little as you want........................... here's how:
Lie on your back, knees a bit bent (and together! ) with your feet secure. Either get someone to hold them or stick them under a chair or something. Then raise yourself a few inches off the floor, pulling yourself up with your abs. That is "bottom". Hold it for 5 seconds. After 5 move a few inches upwards so you are half way up - that is "middle" - hold for 5 second. Then go back to "bottom" for 5, then "middle" for 5. Hold it there and do 10 crunches. Then go up to the "top" and relax for 5 seconds. Then do "Bottom" for 5, "middle" for 5, and finally "bottom" again for 10 seconds. If you can manage it, finish off with 10 full sit ups.
If you have done no exercise before, that is probably too long a set. You could maybe cut out the crunches or allow yourself two "top" breaks inseatd of one. Or do each part for 3 seconds not 5. All in all, you can adapt it and then increase it when you feel you have improved a bit. It's fun and is more interesting than just doing sit ups.
Run naked down the streets and you will be chased by loads of eager guys so making you run faster...
I liked the idea of the hard on at the end of the bench....but then I am naughty!!!!! wink
Get some cheesy 80's music, a hula hoop and a skipping rope.
Dance for 1/2 hour (think hot gossip, very bendy and stretchy and energetic)
Skip for 1/2 hour - trying to remember the rhymes makes the time fly
Hula Hoop for 1/2 hour - you'll use loads of energy.
You can break them up during the day, it's not a super quick fix but it is lots of fun and does work.

I took up martial arts (thats martial not marital, hehe) Works for me as unlike the gym it varies, it a lot more fun, and I feel more confident.
Upshot of that is not only do you get fitter and more supple, you also walk taller smile
I recommend Aikido as it non violent, but that me ...
I enjoyed Judo, bet I`d remember sod all now though!

suck in your tummy and throw punches remembering to cross your centerline with each punch thrown for 10 minutes, press ups for 5 minutes, sit ups for 10 minutes, drink water at least 2 lts water a day and your to WARM UP before you excersise,A WARM UP IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE EXCERSISE,,,,,,,any gals wanna warm me up biggrin
Clare,
You have had a variety of replys to your question, some good some not so good.
You mentioned that you have kids, but you didnt mention how old they are, this could be useful to advise you in what excercises you need to be doing as there are different ones for if you have recently given birth.
The first thing i would tell you to do is get a check up with your doctor to make sure your in a healthy and fit state to start an excercise regime (sorry have to include that bit for legal reasons, wether you do it or not is upto you).
You also mention that you have set yourself a target, please do not make this a weight orientated target as there is no point. your weight will fluctuate throughout the day and especially at your time of the month. Instead break your target down into small realistic goals such as ' i shall be able to walk to the local shops without feeling absolutly knackered by the time i get there'. this way you will be able to gauge your progress over a set time scale.
There are two activities which are very good for toning, one is swimming as Calista
mentioned before (dont be worried about going to your local gym as no one is really staring at you they are either feeling as nervous as you or too wrapped up in there own personal appearance to notice.) and the other is walking.
Just getting off the bus one stop early or leaving the car at home and walking to the shops will help in your fat burning which will allow you to feel and look much better.
Also if you do decide to train at the gym or start a walking regime, take it easy. it is pointless to go at it like a bull in a china shop as you will only feel deflated and give up at the first hurdle or cause yourself an injury.
To start with do any activity that leaves you slighty out of breath, this would be your optimum training level, you can gently push yourself harder as you notice your fitness improving and your body feeling frimer.
As TheFacilitator mentioned, your stomach muscles are part of your inner core but you must not ignore the rest of your core muscles such as your back at lats (side muscles).
If you are feeling particually flush, think about hiring a PT instructor such as myself to help you in your quest for the perfect bod lol. I would offer to come and train you but as i have torn the tendon in my knee i wouldnt be much help, though i am more than happy to advise you via email free of charge.
Hope this helps
right, after writing all that im knackered and off to bed
Please forgive the spelling as i have a new wireless keyboard and its very tempermental.
My kids are 5 and 2 so no recent ones!
I go to the doctors every 8 weeks to be weighed so ive been checked out and am healthy etc.
My targets are mainly size orientated not specifically weight ones.
As we havent got a car we walk everywhere anyway!
As for quest for the perfect bod,i don't want perfect i just want a better one than ive got now!!!
Thanks everyone for the tips, especially thanks to Rudolph, some good points raised there.

Hi Clare,
In a word...swimming. Swimming is the perfect exercise as it works every muscle in the body. You can make swimming as much fun or as much of a work out as you want. You also have the added bonus of..........
wait for it...........
my personal fav.........
Not sweating!!!
Silky xxxxxxxxxxxx (thinking she may head off to the pool now)
Big G just thought he had better add on top of Silkys suggestion his own tips for stomach firming .
Whenever I go for a few pints , then have a Chicken Dupiaza and a couple of Naan bread on the way home , I always find my stomach is as tight as a drum . Hope this helps .

I'd second the advice on swimming (or should that be third it?)
I've mangaged more chest development (not exactly what you're looking for) in 3 weeks by swimming than 3 months in the gym.
here is a link that for site that lists all the open air pools in the uk (since we are having such good wheather at the moment).

Hi Clare,
Well done on your amazing success so far. Felt I had to reply because as an Aerobics Instructor - and never having maintained a svelte figure in my life without exercise, I feel that I can totally sympathise with you. It sounds as though you've got a reasonable amount of fitness from all the walking you do. If you want great legs and a flat stomach absolutely NOTHING beats taking up a form of martial arts. Everytime you throw a punch or kick you have to stabalise your core muscles and pull your stomach in to maintain your balance. It tones your whole body very quickly and really increases your flexibility wink If you can't get to a class then try a dvd like the Billy Blanks Tae Bo series or Micah Bo is also good and he's not quite as "over the top" - Amazon have a really comprehensive stock and if you build up a collection then it might ward off the boredom until you're feeling more confident. Failing that just try squeezing your abs whenever you remember (think washing up, before you go to sleep etc).
Good Luck!!

Theres been mention of watching videos such as tae bo and other 'excercise/self defence' combo videos... only use these if your only looking to tone up and excercise as the 'self-defence' part of them is not much more than a marketing gimmick, if your interested in self defence and many on here have said it is the best form of all round toning excercise.. then find yourself a local class
If your not bothered about any of the above then buy a skipping rope,
Stretch yourself out for 10 minits... jog for 10 (on the spot if you want, this way you can mix leg strokes from simple up/down to kicking upto your backside and raising your knee)
Skip for 15 mins, push ups/sit ups/squats, then stretch to warm down
All in all will take you an hour tops... try not to rest to much inbetween sections as you really need to build it up and work a sweat on
3 times a week and i guarantee you will notice it within a fortnight.. also dont have anything to eat for an hour before it.. just drink
Russ
chinees sit ups were allways good at leat you can watch the telly whilst doing it ( please note they are not the type that require you to physicaly sit up, but do require your legs to be raised from the floor about 6 inches).
This will work your tummy muscles and your legs as you require both to hold your legs up, burns like hell but that what they use in kung fu, statr with holding up your legs for about 10 seconds at a go, having a 10 second reat between each one, start with 10 sets and work up, a black belt is expected to hold that position for a minimum iof 3 mins on each occasion during assessment.
