I think there are too many types and shapes of doughnuts about nowaays. I think we ought retrace our steps and go back to ring doughnuts, doughnuts that are long and spilt with cream in and the mighty jam filled sugar coated confectionary ball affair.
Bloody choice today of long ones round ones custard filled apple filled black current filled ones odd shaped ones, ones with chocolate covering and sprinkles ones with pink coverings ring ones with cinnamon and sugar - too many doughnuts, too much choice, too much to think about. Its just a bun too far in my book I'm telling you we are on the slippery slope we are on no oh woe is me
totally agree, blame the americans!!!!!!!
I'm afraid I only consider the sugary ring type bought freshly cooked on the seafront to be true doughnuts. All other versions are mere confections. Nice enough in their own right, but frivolous imitations nonetheless. Until you've burnt your mouth on a ring, you haven't lived
Round doughnut, filled with fresh cream and coated with a thick layer of caramel.
Ok it isn't traditional - but it's heaven every bite.
Freshly baked ring doughnuts, still warm and heaped with sugar

For those who want to make their own.
Doughnut party anyone?
I kind of class myself as the king of the doughnut up here in Newcastle, and I have to say that the sooner bakeries up here realise that there is more to just sticking some icing on one and serving it up then the better my doughnut shopping will be..!
Krispy creme all the way.. mmmmmm
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm Donuts - I like the ring ones made on the vans. I put jam in the bottom and clotted cream on top...got me wanting now!! My fav local donut van doesn't come here anymore
Fresh crispy ring donuts, split, a little dollop of jam and lots of whipped cream  My hips just grew 3 inch thinking about that
It has to be a ring donut though even plain with sugar
