Does anyone knowledgable sh user know why we have a tradition of eating Turkey at Christmas?
Do many of you have goose or had anyone had one of those pheasant inside a chicken inside a goose type efforts - they sound complicated to cook but pretty good?
Personally think Turley is over rated - its dryer than chicken and doesn't have much tatse so looking for alternatives this year!
I love my Turkey at xmas, only time i eat it biggrin
I believe it dates back to the colonial period when they were brought back from the states and became more popular than the tradition of Goose
Im having goose as normal this year. Much nicer

i agree with cuddly, i love turkey but will only eat it at christmass as thats what makes it special for me, nothing better than waking up to the smell of turkey roasting mmmmm
Could it be something to do with the stuffing?

Shit.... beat me to it lol
Mrs Westyorkscplrus says ... "I don't know the history behind it but it had to be a man's idea ... turkeys have got big breasts!!!" lol
:laughabove:
think it being brought back from america is right they not dry if ya keep them well baisted!
as for geese if you are cooking one make sure you roast in a deep roasting tray as they produce a very lot of grease!!!!
& the birds inside birds is fantastic but can be a little expensive by the time you buy all the birds a very good alternative is-
remove the bones from chicken/turkey from the rear end keeping bird whole then spread thick layer of stuffing at bottom inside bird next take large ball of sausage meat put on top of stuffing then fill remaining cavity with stuffing smile
when it comes to slice the bird you can just slice straight accross the bird giving you ring of sausage meat inside ring of stuffing inside ring of chicken you will not believe how many people this will feed!!! :) :)
just be carefull with cooking times weigh the finished bird before cooking dont want anybody with salmonella over christmas!!
enjoy :) :)
Henry VIII was the first English king to enjoy turkey, although Edward VII made eating turkey fashionable at Christmas. Turkey was a luxury right up until the 1950's when refrigerators became commonplace.

yep, nothing beats stuffing a juicy big breasted bird, gobbling along merrily at Xmas.
confused: How long can you keep a turkey in a freezer for.
I put mine in last night and opened the door this morning and it was dead
grimpol wink
only one thing for it try feeding it some stuffing & put in the oven to warm it up biggrin

My mum used to say that turkey was too dry, so she used to get a capon.
Wer'e thinking of having one this year, and i had to ask my mum exactly what it was, as i cudnt remember.
By way of a bit of a hijack, and giving information to the thread, does anyone know what a capon is???

My eyes are watering now and im going to hide in the wardrobe for the next week!!!!
Well it's always got to be turkey here, although H is not a keen fan. For the last few years our local butcher has been making up Turkey rolls........ it's breast of turkey rolled with stuffing..... feckin gorgeous, and no legs or wings which neither of us like that much....
Don't like goose.... to greasy, Don't like duck (H does) cos it's too dry. Xmas dinner is the only time I truly get to choose what we eat so Turkey it is everytime.........
Oh and yes I think it's something we got from the states as well smile
Sorts and glasgowfella, you were both correct.
It is a cockerel with no balls and they are , or were, injected with hormones to make them big and fat.
I didnt know it had been stopped, but i do remember they were very tasty.
Of course, i may have been affected by the hormones, cos im big and fat, and mrs m often says ive got no balls!!
