Universal this and universal that

I've just noticed that a lot of products carry the label "Universal summatorother"
A quick glance around the room and I can see Universal Gas Lighter Refill, Universal Cleaner, Universal Plug Adapter to name a few.
What exactly does this mean? Is it (as I think) that they can be used on/with just about anything? dunno

This is surely not right. I mean, I wouldn't want to use Universal Cleaner (which is for cleaning my laptop,tv,hi-fi etc) instead of a wet wipe, or could I? Can I use it on myself? Could I clean my teeth with it? Would I come to any harm? :undecided:

Universal means that it's only safe to use in this universe and may explode during trans-universal journeys.

Am thinking the word 'universal' is probably a marketing tool.
If you put universal on something then you are led to believe that everyone uses it and therefore it is a good product.

Universal means it was invented in a University and is therefore likely to smell of Special Brew, explode for no readily apparent reason, drop buckets of unspeakable substances on your head, and generally sit around being completely useless. biggrin
