ello you lot!
have you ever had one of those weeks that start out with a catastrophe, get steadily more disasterous, then just when you think things couldn't possibly get any worse, the cruel hand of fate slaps you about a bit, and stands there pointing and pissing himself laughing at your complete bewilderment?
i fucking hate that cruel hand of fate i do! bastard! ;)
anyways, t'is a long story, and i won't bore you with details. suffice to say having run round like a headless chicken for several days, i settled into my new humble abode, put me PC together, and waited for a suitable hour before i hijacked my housemates phoneline for the night to get on here.
at that point, my CDROM decided to commit suicide. dunno why cos i thought he had quite a decent life as far as CDROMs go, but he was obviously depressed about something, so adios! one minute he's browsing CDs and the next he's making this god awful chugging noise, the PC locks up, i can still move my mouse, but but can't click anything, can't switch tasks, nada.
now not a major problem you'd think! quick reset, jobs a good un, and i have at least 2 CDROMs lying about, so he won't exactly be missed will he? BUT . . . the selfish bugger decided he'd take some other bits and bobs down with him, or so it seems.
my PC now refuses to boot at all. no POST, no BIOS screen, nothing. the VDU steadfastly refuses to come outta standby, the PC is to all intents and purposes dead. the PSUs fine, and theirs obviously power flowing across the motherboard, cos the power switch on the case works, CDROM lights up, HD at least sounds like it's trying to spin up, but no lights on case or keyboard, nothing.
now my CDROM can't really have killed my MOBO, or CPU, or anything else when it went can it? i'm well and truly stuck. it's taken me this bloody long to blag my way online. not sure how long for or when i'll next get on, but any help VERY gratefully received.

Quik!
Someone grab hold of Neil before his pc konks out! worship
Debs runs round like a head less chicken
ok ok i no its has a head but its the only one i could find
OOO Neil what we going to do with ya hay? and that bloody pc of yours
Im no whizz at this neil but I recently had to replace my ahrd drive and the "symptoms" youve described sound just like what happened to my pc too.

this might sound silly but have you unplugged the computer then plugged it back in.
rebooting sometimes does not clear problems, comp should be switched off complettely.
if that dont work maybe even try unplugging the cdrom.
you can try rebooting, or unplugging as the case maybe, then hold donwn escape and see if it goes into "safe" mode, then reboot and see if it will reboot again.

Hi Neil i had the same problem with my laptop. Lil_miz is right when you had to reset your pc the hard drive was probably still spinning and his sometimes damages the heads as your pc closes down.
I think its a new hard drive.
there is a shop in leeds city centre called Computer exchange, who can test your drive and advise on options (not an ad, I just use them for bits and pieces)
hope this is of help
The BIOS might be set to boot from the CD-ROM first (particularly if you been doing an install). You could try switching everything off, removing the CD-ROM, then rebooting...it might just fool it !
I doubt very much if you've borked your hard-drive, I've given mine some fearful abuse in the past, including throwing the PC at S during a particularly violent argument and it's always been OK. I'm probably completely wrong though !smile
bit more detail . . . .
both HD's are fine, cos i've just had 'em both plugged into the PC i'm currently on, and they read ok.
i've stripped the PC down completely, and tried plugging minimal hardware back in, i.e. one HD, VDU, mouse, keyboard.
the mobo has onboard sound and graphics etc. usually when i switch on, it beeps, after a few seconds the VDU comes outta standby, it goes thru the POST, BIOS, boot etc. none of that happens. don't even get a beep out of it.
inclined to think this is kinda major?
i wouldn't bloody mind, but i've only just got a half decent PC together after months! banghead ;)

the only thing i can think of is that the BIOS is set to stop start up if there is a problem with a component.
can u get into the BIOS at all?

Me too. I`m thinking `fucked motherboard` *ouch*

i have a programme that tests the motherboard and all the components
it copies onto a floppy
but u need to be able to get into BIOS to set the boot seq for floppy
if u want it can email it to u.
just pm me

Arent motherboards expensive to replace???? lol
You should try getting a software in called Check IT Diagnostics. I use this to check my motherboard, HD, memory etc to check it is all working well from day to day. It tells you if there is something wrong with your pc.

motherboards are getting really cheap now depending on what type of processor you have

Either a piece of hardware has got disconnected, or it is faulty. A pc won't start the Bios unless it has both memory to address and a cpu to cycle. Therefore check that the memory and CPU are properly seated in the motherboard. If you have more than one stick of memory, then try single sticks. If it still wont work then try memory from another known working pc (check it is compatible). Same for the cpu (again check it is compatible). If still no joy, then its a hardware failure of the memory, cpu (doubtful) or the motherboard itself. Most hardware comes with a 3yr warrenty so check that. If not then its spend the ££ time. Try or if you want bagin basement then try (not 100% reliable on deliveries mind).
If you need anymore help just ask...........

Agree with that.
The fact that it's not beeping or anything like that makes me think that part of the mobo fried. There may be some kind of fused component somewhere that's blown due to your CD drive jamming and drawing more current.
What mobo is it and what processor do you have?
Other than that, just completely strip the mobo of all other boards and refit them making sure they're fully down, oh and check the power plug from the psu. wink
Phoned him to keep him updated on this thread. He`s done all of the above. He don`t sound happy
He`s currently off to pick up a spare monitor.......just in case.

in technoshite terms, it's an M758LMR+ ((( PC Chips i think ))) with a PIII 533 clocked at 600. i'm kinda thinking same as you easy. the CDROM now makes a nice rattling noise when i shake it, but thought with the voltages involved it wouldn't be enough to fry the board. seems like it tho.
just off to cannibalise a mates PC and see where we go. least i can rule out the memory and maybe CPU. it's a Socket 370 PIII so think a Celeron 333 is compatible???????? dunno this may take some time! sad :( :(
cheers guys
