Ok
The problem:-
Someone has had a wedding dress made and it is too long, it wasnt made in this country, so it cannot go back and be altered.
The front of the dress is about 6" too long, it cannot be shortened in this country either, as all the detail embroidery will go. It cannot be shortened from the bodice either as it is made from one lenght of material so there is no bodice.
The bride cannot wear fuck me type heels / boots etc as she is getting married on a beach and would sink into the sand if she did.
Can any one think of any sensible suggestions, please?
(there is one very upset Bride from this site out there at the moment)
duno what to suggest but hope she gets it sorted out have you tried taking it to a professional dress maker for any ideas
Without knowing the style & material, it's difficult to say.
Do you have any pictures?
Would it be possible to make a pleat in the fabric just above the embroidered section? It could be done either so that the pleat was decorative, or just sewn to the inside of the dress. Is it possible to email me a picture of the dress, showing the hem - I'm assuming that the back is longer, because you've only said it's 6" too long at the front.
only thing i can think of is a hoop to lift it but obviously depends upon the style of the dress
or
again depending on dress think of cinderella dress and draw sections up by stretching elastic to 6 to 8 inches and that will lift the dress, find matching diamantes or
roses or something to hide the lift, if its a detail round the bottom it tends to repeat so should be able to do this and make it look like it is supposed to be there
all i can think of sorry
like i said it really depends on the dress
Earthy xx
take it to a reputable dress maker
they can give her the options

Thanks folks, the lady in question will be reading this tomorrow.
I haven't actually seen the dress.
Thanks xxx
i asked my mam who has a business altering wedding dresses for a wedding shop surprise surprise and she made a few suggestions one of which i have given above but said without seeing style of dress etc its hard to advise.
EArthy xx
If the bride cannot wear the fuckme heels for fear of sinkage.... how about platforms?
lp
Depending on how much detail there is along the bottom and how high it goes, the hem could be chopped off and raised...making it an additional detail along the bottom...
If the detail goes higher in areas around the bottom, may even go higher in the front area leading the eye up towards the waist. It probably wouldnt work.
As Earthy said..... alteration from the waist sounds the only workable option. However its done, it may completely change the design/look of the dress..
Depending on the design, a piece of ornate twisted silk/rope/twine (other words for this but my heads not with me) sewn on lower down the dress or hem thats held in the hand or around the wrist may take the dress off the ground.
Sorry not much help...
A good dress maker may have more suggestions/ideas. All the best......

the dress problem if the bride could possibly wear some pretty wedge type shoes...you can get quite sophisticated ones and they give you more balance and stability than stilettos
How about glueing a paving slab to the bottom of each high heel shoe?
That way, she'll feel like she's permanently on a patio biggrin
How about seeing if a dressmaker can shorten the bodice from the top of it. Kinda lifting the dress? dunno

she could break with tradition, arrive before the groom and stand on a box...
or be pulled along on some sort of sled type arrangement by two scantily clad adonis types...
Ok Useless I know but I do hope something can be sorted
The bride could throw caution to the wind and tuck the dress in her knickers?
Bride kiss
now is this any way to give advice??
no more silly and childish jibes if you please...
high heels?
german jack boots?

thanks everyone! thankyou for trying to think of ideas to help. i have emailed a pic of a very similar dress to the people who have asked, so if anyone can think of an idea, then i really would appreciate it. when you see the shape and detail, you will see where the problem with it being altered may come in.
i know people prob think its stupid to be so upset over a dress, but i am just feeling really down and sad right now and this ontop of it all has made me really emotional, so i am sorry. kiss
xx
Im sure no one thinks its stupid Busty to get emotional and upset passionkiss
Have a look in the phone book for a dress maker with plenty of experience. Those older men & women that have years experience of altering and resizing can work wonders.
Try and stay calm though on the whole situation as whatever happens with the dress you'll look fantastic on the day.
Good luck & keep us posted on how you get on xxx
nobody thinks you being silly its a major part of the enjoyment, you will get there. :therethere:
noooooo hun being upset isnt silly at all i happen to think that the dress is one of the most important parts of it as you will always remember your day and you both will remember how wonderful you looked. a beautiful bride you shall be hun dont worry it will get sorted how long is it to the wedding? if not long then id be phoning round a few good dress makers they will prob ask to see the dress and tell you if they can help im sure they deal with these sorts of problems all the time and shouldnt be to difficult for them to sort.
We have had similar problems in our family as we have a wedding dress thats been in the family for 70 years it has been altered many times and 12 people been married in it although the next person might have trouble as the dress was last altered last year for my mother who is nearly 6 feet tall and was 8 month pregnant at the time if either of her 2 daughters decide to get married in it next it will be far to long as we both just 5 feet tall
Bets of luck to you and wish you a wonderful day
Awwww shame you can always send it to me i shrink everything i wash well thats my excuse when things dont fit me anymore biggrin sorry hope it's all ok on the big day tho :therethere:

kiss to sarah, i THINK i have had an idea what i can do with it, i might have it made into a skirt and top, so they can cut the length from the middle iyswim.
its not ideal and its sad that it wont be the dress i wanted, but its better than nothing i guess.
am going to try and get an appt for somewhere next weekend and see how much they charge and what they can suggest, otherwise i might go with my idea and get the motherinlaw to help
thankyou everyone for your help

I hope you get some ideas that work, something a tad better that attaching yourself to a couple of paving slabs rolleyes
As peed off as you are now, it'll work out to the exact opposite end of the scale - you'll be not only over the moon about your dress in the end, but you're gonna look just radiant
And, if you wanna PM a pic over this way, I'll put my thinking cap on too ........ can't promise anything clever or workable, but I'll try bluddy hard to help make it all better for you

I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpful WBB, but I'm sure you'll look gorgeous on the day whatever you wear.

Dont make any alterations WBB until you are really sure what you want to do. You still have plenty of time so make sure whatever alterations you do are the ones you really want wink
You will be gorgeous on the day - this is a very small blip and the most important thing is it has arrived now not the day before
Good luck !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
