anyone else in east midlands got intermitent problems with virgin ..... keeps dropping out ?
It happens all over the place. I had it in cardiff recently for 3 days confused
Virgin have been nothing but trouble since they took over NThell
this is the first trouble we hav had since virgin took over altho did hav probs occasionally b4
keeps dropping .... fo9ned them but no help as all gone home lol
it might help to appreciate that Virgin like Tiscali and AOL is not an internet connection.
In exactly the same way that sex with a condom is not the same as bareback sex .So Internet connections with Virgin ( formely NTHELL ) are not the same as connections with companies like Eclipse, Zen, Plusnet, Demon.
Your connection has a barrier between you and the experience which alters your penetration into the internet.
Now whilst Condoms are fantastic for safe sex they are lousy for real internet connections. For a real connection and the best experience you need to surf with a lot less protection.
now that I have used up all the worst metaphors and puns and opportunities let me be clear.
I DO NOT ADVOCATE BAREBACK OR UNSAFESEX FOR THE SWINING LIFESTYLE SCENE.
oh and if your connection from the internet to your computer is not via something connected to a USB Port on your computer theres an excellent chance you have the best in protection possible but I will be happy to do a course no this if anyone need it !
ps . yep Virgins.. utterly unreliable !
Ok in regard to the above mumbo jumbo........have been on virgin/ntl for several years for their broadband and only last night had any problem whatsoever......as someone on a tight budget they have always been reliable and never once moaned about me downloadin loads of films/apps etc......even on their 2 meg service I get very very high transfer rates and for 10 quid a month thats brill......as regards internet thru usb.....using usb to connect to your modem uses system resources and slows pc down if you are doin several things at once.......fit a network card and you are far better off ......ok cant believe I am defending virgin but thats my experience any way smile
Been with Telewest (now virgin) for years and only started to have a problems a few months back. Emailed them and then followed up with a phone call threatening to leave them and got offered (at no cost, so long as I took their basic TC package) an upgreade to 20mg internet!
Now have TV (basic) phone line and broadband for £27 a month! Not bad and the speeds are pretty stable.
Gray danne, there is a post in the Chatroom lounge which gives a link to a site where you can check your speeds and there is a lot in that about virgin, might be worth checking it out and then complaining 'nicely' to see what they can offer (drop into the conversation that you are thinking of going to sky broadband and that makes them sit up and listen) wink

Well at least it was a condom that went over your head, without the condom, it could have gone in your eye and that hurts :P
redface Ok i'm sorry but i have to say this, why cause i'm a sad git with nothing to do but.........
Virgin have owned majority shares in NTL/Telwest for years all they have done is rebrand it to virgin media,
Its still the same just different name.......
i shall now get my coat and leave bolt

I've recently had 6 days (count em) 6 days without broadband, all down to feckin BT. I knew of other people in our village with exactly the same problem but they kept insisting it was a problem with my router / line / mac!!
Even the BT engineer they eventually sent said his was out too and it was a BT server problem.

I should be so lucky......lucky lucky lucky :-)
Hi,
I've been with Telewest/Virgin for years and had very few problems, so much so that when I move I'll use them again. I had 256kps(which is really slow) to begin with and didn't have any problems
Firstly, try switching off the router/modem or both if you have them for about 30 seconds and reboot the machine.
Secondly, Networks can get busy regardless of your provider, so don't loose heart. Its not a dedicated line so the more people that join the more they have to open the network. Its a bit like a motorway in that the more cars use it the more there is a need to put in a extra lane. Contact the provider and ask if they are carrying out any maintenance. Virgin will list any work they are carrying out.
Thirdly, Virus can slow your computer down. Again check with the provider to see if they have any problems accessing the network.
Forthly, having various applications running at one time will slow up your computer and anti-virus software does slow the computer. Without it you could turn on and access the internet in seconds with it it takes 5-10 minutes. Older computers only have one processor, which means it can only do one job at a time (a bit like a man I'm told). Although you think its doing multiply jobs its actually running between them never quite finishing them (a bit like a woman I'm told). This eventually takes a long time and the more memory applications use the slower it becomes. New computers with dual processes help this
Finally, If nothing works kick and throw it out and say to yourself you never like the internet and its a load of bollocks. It won't fix anything but you might feel a little better for a day or two. lol
You are right Geordie its not always the ISP thats to blame.....In our case tho we were gettin regular dis connections at random times.....nothin to do with our laptops....have set up and fixed quite a few wireless networks as well and the switch it all off and start again advice is quite useful sometimes....modems are best switched on b4 routers to enable correct ip address retreval....How come it takes you 5-10 mins to get on with your antivirus.......I use avg free anti virus and spyware doctor and get straight on....Anyway thats gettin away from the point.....Moral is Virgin still havin probs but then again have heard much worse things about other suppliers and seein as we only pay £10 a month am goin to stop moanin smile xxxxGary xxxx

whats a virgin??? hehehehehehe lol   rolleyes
doensnt happen to us lol
Regular disconnects on a Wireless connection on Windows is caused by the truly wonderful Wireless Zero Configuration tool. If you search google for Wireless Disconnects XP you'll see its getting to be a pain in the arse ( and not in a good way ) . Theres some real mixed messages as to how to fix it. I gave up ( and I provide IT support for a living ) and just connected a Ethernet cable to the laptop and used the HomePlug ethernet adapters around the house.

Ditto here only on afternoon / evening drop out and they gave us a free ppv film for that so no complaints her after about 5 years
Ok Gary-Danne,
There is a link to Microsoft's support forum

My understanding of wireless disconnection is that your wireless card is trying to access the network and then Windows Operating systems says hang on that's our job so you get confusion between the 2.
Microsoft networking is poor, but its really the only one a layman can use, which s why they create this wireless zero config to help people.
My Anti virus was born out of a business application which is why it slows things down on start up. I hate Norton, McAfee so I decided to get something I could rely on. That coupled with the fact I have numerous applications starting up when I boot up causes a slow down.
Another thing I wouldn't go to sky. I know lots of people with problems using sky. Another point when switching providers is that Sky, BT, and others is that they provide broadband on a telephone line. You have one frequency for phone and one for internet. Virgin use true broadband in that it comes through a coxal cable (a copper wire not a phone line) this helps a eliminate problems coming from the phone line. This is only my experience.

Hmmm just wundering which part of leicester you are in/near and if there is any MOD facilties near by
i live not far from an RAF base and we lose signal every so often and it because of some of the equipment they use
thank you for your replies everyone biggrin
the problem was definetly with virgin and not here .... so not the wireless networking or anything else either ... they were all checked as gary is brilliant at stuff like that and frequently sorts out problems for others ... therefore we knew it must be virgins problem and hence this thread asking if others had the same problem :D
i hav been with virgin/ntl for about 7 years and in that time had few problems and garys been with them for a while to and this is his first problem so not to bad a track record really :D
and we wont be going to sky, bt etc cus they are way to expensive and as we only want broadband and not a phone line virgin are right for us :D
