OK.. front or back USB???

Finger in the front one, toe in the back. Don't you girlies know anything?
Your setup is similar to mine, I think. If you keep Windows up to date with its patches, tell IE not to run any dodgy code (tools->internet options->security->custom level, and set anything saying "ActiveX" to either "disable" or "prompt"), and let the router do its NAT thing, your computer will be fine.
To keep you virus-free, it's necessary to either have no contact with any other person unless you are both enclosed in full-body condoms, or be dead.

I'm taking paracetamol q.i.d. and water every 15 minutes - that should sort out the virus! Thanks x xx

Ok the bad news....
At present there is no 100% effective antivirus software and it is likely to remain that way for a while.
The problem stems from the fact that the virus has to be out in the wild before the antivirus firms update their virus signatures. This can take a day or so.
Then you need to download the update for your antivirus software (you do do that every day don't you), this can take anything up to 2 weeks for some people. AVG, for example, defaults to checking for updates every 14 days! - If you use AVG change it now to daily. Some versions of Sophos are set to monthly updates by CD!!!!!
Some, read most, virus checkers have a setting called Heuristics. This tries to detect virus like behaviour on your computer. Most antivirus used to come with this switched off confused . Make sure it is switched ON. OK, it's not brilliant, but at least it caught one attempt on my system recently.
Now that I've scared you all shitless, there are a couple of things you can do:
Install a Firewall like Zone alarm - Make sure you think before you let a program access the web - should it be doing so?
Make sure you do your antivirus update dailyThese won't make you immune. What they will do is lessen the chance of you getting a virus/trojan/worm etc.
Oh, I'm paranoid - I run 3 different antivirus packages, one on the server, a different one on the mail server, Norton AV on the Workstations and a hardware firewall that thinks its a duck's arse!
