Hey Guys n Gals
Just a wee heads up if anyone bought their little bundles of joy a PS3 for Christmas. We got one for our 10 year old and are in the middle of setting it up. Now due to his age I used my email address to link it to the internet. Kandi has just went up to make sure it is all working okay and realised that my darling 10 year old son has full access to our profile on the laptop! Yes, every single one of our pictures can be seen on my sons tv from his playstation! We are in the process of figuring out how to change all the settings but just wanted to raise your awareness just in case you haven't checked this for yourself. Boxing day could have been very interesting in our house if we had not noticed this
The PS3 bypassed all our passwords on the laptop and gave him access to all our photos! We are still trying to sort it out and see what exactly has happened.
My son does not have access to any passwords or anything to do with security in relation to settings on the computer. I am the administrator with full control of settings and he has a basic profile on the laptop with restrictions. No passwords have been put into the playstation. Somehow, the playstation has full access to the laptop on the same IP address. My profile is password protected...even Kandi doesn't know it! and yet the playstation has full access to my account on the laptop.
I don't get how he would know to even look for your profile on his playstation?
I'm on the same network as my other half and my son, but they can't access my laptop.
Look at the 'media sharing' part of your laptop.
And in relation to our swinging account, We use a seperate email address from everything else for added security. I simply used my normal everyday email address to register the playstation. However the playstation is connected to the same wireless router and from here has given itself access to the profiles on my wireless network. No password information has been required on the console for this. It is a just a heads up for others to ensure they check their security settings on their laptop and not just assume that the safety of the windows password is all that is required. File sharing was enabled between kandi and my profile to ensure we had access to photos etc ( the childrens profile does not have access to this file sharing ) however the playstation automatically gave itself access to any shared files on your home network regardless of passwords put in place.
I hope this makes it a bit clearer
You have to check which equipment you want to share the media. If your photos are shared on your network, you need to tell it not to share them with the playstation.
And regarding access to the site, if you need to use passwords to get in, then he'd still have to enter the password to get on SH.
Thanks frecklebird biggrin
We have disabled the sharing of pictures between our profiles and it has rectified the problem. We just didn't think that our son would have had access to our pictures as they were password protected in my user account. Just a wee heads up for others in case they hadn't thought of this. We always monitor the computer usage for our children. It was just a tad worrying that a simple thing like that could have had drastic consequences.
At least it's sorted. You can deal with sharing with your wife, at your leisure. smile
lol this is the wife ;-) kandi was the one upstairs sorting the playstation settings out when he flicked by a picture of his ass! And I now realise the confusion when I said profile in my original post. I was refering to the profile on the laptop, not the profile on here biggrin
Since the PS3 is accessing the internet as well, and don't they check to make sure you aren't cracking their security and downloading films etc onto the PS3? Does that mean the people at Sony also have access to all your photos?
Isn't all this technology wonderful. I'm really sorry but I had to have a little chuckle at your predicament. I'm glad you got it sorted.
Pete
Are you sharing you photos for viewing via windows media player?. the only way the PS3 could see stuff shared on your laptop is that way. the PS3 can't view shared network files.
I have to say...
I wish that when I was a 10 year old, I had such photogenic sexy parents as you two... :rascal:

nothing to do with your email addy, PS3 has DNLA built in, Windows Media Player and/or Windows 7 is DNLA compatable, what this means is it can share content from your computer to the PS3 (videos/music/pictures), to turn this off you need to change setting on your computer so it no longer shares the files out.
Note that this DNLA system can also work between two computers in a house, so if you have children with computers carefull.
If the media server is somthing of intrest then you can limit the folders to which the DNLA will look at.
(note im a techy for profession)

The photos on the laptop are on the local network and not the internet so the answer is no smile
Well must say I am a bit confused confused??: I have Ps3 and Xbox 360 and to share files you have to allow media sharing. I have actually tried to get this to work and cant get it working lol My PC and PS3 or Xbox 360 can never detect each other, became annoying so I gave up. All I wanted to do was stream film from the PC to the Xbox 360 in the front room. How you have managed to set it up without event trying is a mystery

if you have the firewall set incorrectly on your computer it will block it showing up on the network

Try twonkymedia or ps3mediaserver
I dont know what I tried it was some time ago. Think I tried setting the 360 in a DMZ but it still didnt work :-? Will look at it again, the network has altered a bit so may get more luck.
Could we have the techy bit in non techy language!! i would so like to now check that my son's ps3 (when he is home) and my daughters lappys - which use my wireless thingy cant get to my pics :-?
Thanks for all the input guys biggrin we eventually got it sorted out...thank god! Was a worry as we are not technophobes but just didn't realise that the PS3 could have access to everything lol. Kandis face when he shouted me after he had seen his ass fly by the screen on my sons room was a picture :-D Hope you all had a lovely Christmas

Ok easy answer....
Create a folder with in the "Program Files" folder (Windows will not like it but your fine to carry on) then hide all your fun pictures and videos in there. This works really well as the system files ie those in the program folder are not index by Windows and therefore will not show up on media sharing.
Hope this helps, any probs drop me a line and I can talk you though it better.
Thankyou for the non technical information. Tried the create a folder suggestion, and that appears to have worked. Must admit though, for us non technical minded grown ups, its quite a worry what you may access on these game stations
well fucking great for all you trying to stop it working lol Still cant get it to work on mine  Using an Xbox 360 which is no different to the PS3 for media sharing. The 360 is allowed in media sharing and the PC can see the 360 wave However the 360 fails to detect a pc confused??: I once again tried putting the 360's IP address as the DMZ and the 360 still cant see the PC. Been trying this off and on for at least 2 years  really do give up now rolleyes
Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Could it be the PC's firewall not letting the 360 in? dunno
