I was out with a group of friends last night when this conversation came up.
As I work from home and am self employed I was saying it isn’t always easy as some make think, as with everything in life there are advantages and disadvantages.
The advantages are
I can fit work around children, but not always easy in the holidays
I don’t have the expense and hassle of commuting
I can work the hours that suit me
I can work at late or as early as I like
I can free up time easier
I only have myself to answer too
The disadvantages are
It gets pretty lonely at times
There is very little social interaction
You have to be disciplined
It is harder to leave work at work
As we both work from home, you miss saying, “how has your day been”?.
I do enjoy being based at home, but I do miss so much about being out in the workplace too.
Would you like to change the way you work?
What are the pros and cons of your work life?
I work from home too and I reckon you've got the pros and cons spot on. Nothing for me to add!
Interesting post!
I once worked out and about, no fixed work place, and my work was incredibly anti social, and down right lonely at times.
I then changed my work life, and became more based at home, but found the joys of e-bay, wasteful of time and money sometimes!
I found it hard to focus on work and got distracted, even by the ironing at times, but the work fitted around be a Mother of school age children at the time.
I then set up my own business, found the joys of only having to answer to yourself. I can now set my own hours, choose when and where to work, suits me just fine.
What I find very hard to understand at times, is the ammount of people on the chat rooms who seem to be at the office, but can still be in chat for hours on end as well! The SH addiction I think!
So in summary, if it fits in with your life style, both have their place, work at a base or at home, in the end as long as the bills are paid!
I am self employed, and have to go where the work is, driving 50,000 miles a year (it's not a driving job, thats just the commuting and private mileage) I work through agencies, so if I am working, they are earning, so therefore they put pressure on me to work as much as possible.
The industry I work in is based around weekend work, and a regular threat I get is "if you don't work the weekends, we wont give you the weekday work" Weekday work is considered the extras, as opposed to weekends in the real world.
For most of last year, I was driving 125 miles, then doing a 12hr shift, then driving 125 miles home, getting myself to being used to 4-5hrs a night sleep.
When it goes well, the money is better than I have ever earned, I have met some fantastic characters on site, my knowledge has increased, but when all is said and done, I don't want this working lifestyle anymore, steps are being taken to change my career, so who knows how things will be this time next year, but I shall get there, I need a new challenge.
I do both .... full-time job and run my own business after that  Hoping to grow the business enough that I can work part-time on both with the aim to going full-time with my business.
I can't really think of any other pros and cons other than you've listed, you just need to be disciplined and not let distractions get the better of you.
I did/do struggle with the isolation of working for myself but I'm a dab hand on the social networking/marketing side of things so there is usually someone for me to catch up with.
I'm employedby a major plc, but based at home. So i do getthe advantages as well.
On the reverse side I do travel across Northern England and Scotland and end up spending nights in hotels, which if it wasnt for SH would be very boring.
i am self employed. It needs discipline and management to make it work. It can be a very efficient way to work.
i hate having to deal with large organisations. they are slow, they make costly mistakes and they charge far too much for what they produce. So I avoid them as much as possible.
