what is a forum?

Reading through various posts on various threads, I've noticed for want of better terminology an amount of despair at any thread that turns into a clear difference of opinions or that seem to head into or come close to heading into conflict, which has got me asking the question ....what is a forum.
For me a forum is a vehicle where people can tap away at their keys and providing that they stay within the written rules and equally the unwritten rules, as deemed by the self moderation of the posters themselves, more or less blat away to their hearts content.
This cafe is different from a number of other forums I use in that its non specific, yes I know the site its a part of is, but the cafe is a non specialsed forum.
There are threads like the GFZ where folk can go and flirt and generally be nice to each other with out much of an effort making the thread a nice relaxing thing to be a part of, if thats your bag and likewise there are threads that touch on serious topics, where I've seen good debate and opposing views argued with obvious knowledge and experiances.
The vast majority of threads are generally hogwash, but do give us the chance to post and its these that seem to get going only for someone to find either offence or room for upset in them. Some of the best threads I've seen have been based on some wicked piss taking and near the knuckle comments and its that which I found most entertaining.
So in my view, splash around in threads like the GFZ if thats your thing I certainly wouldn't want to come in there and upset the apple cart, its a thread I detest, but see how well it does work for a lot of folk, but please lets not turn the forum into some sort of thick sickly Fry's chocolate cream of a forum where no one feels able to 'give it some' and 'get some back' cos I aint sure that it would be all that interesting.
Sharp and incisive comment within the permitted boundaries, however out of kilter with the general trend is just as important as the fluffy towel approach to posting, both give the rest of us something to latch onto depending on our preferences, I'm just not convinced that everyone reads it that way and therefore am asking the question......what is a forum?

what is a forum??? good question, well to be honest this is the first forum i have ever used so my experiance is limited. to me this place is home from home its where i come when im down, happy, pissed off what ever mood im in i come in and i no that i will get laughs, tears, help support whatever! what ever i need is here, and for me without going into a very long story means a bloody lot to me at the minute to be frank this place stop me going bloody insane ( and those reading this thinking your already insane woman :moon: lol) i love the GFZ iv met some dame good people in there kiss to you all you know who you are!! but i also love the topics that get peoples backs up you can hear the passion in there posts and gets people having a good old debate.
i feel at the minute that this place is been used more of a slagging off ring for the new admin and some people come on here for that reason alone but
the froum means different things to different people. each to there own. as long as we are all having fun then the forum is alive and working.
this might sound like total b*ll*ocks to some of you but im loon :silly: :crazy: anyway so who cares

Well if you look on the forum index under cafe, it says it is a place for discussion and general chit-chat.
My personal understanding - a place to have an open discussion, debate, challenge yourself to actually think and maybe develop new opinions on subjects you have never really considered before. It should be of much greater value than a mutual appreciation society; it should be a place where thoughts are provoked, ideas shared and a well designed piss-take is appreciated for what it is. It should be balanced with some light hearted/tongue in cheek posts. It should be a place where people can be themselves and not feel the need to conform to the status quo – mainly because I have never liked their music!

it is every thing you have said and it is much, much greater than a mutual appreciation society but some off us like to show our appreciation of others as they have been there for others when people have needed it, nothing wrong with that!!!!! might not but what you thinng a forum is about but each there own

I take it on the whole most contributors are "pro swinging" although there is arguement on what it is ! But in that context I cannot say that this is a true forum as clearly there is little input from people who are directly opposed enough for any serious credibilty. It could be said that it is only a form of mutual mental masterbation. in that although there can be heated debate on for example ,what is difference between doggers V's swingers, in the real world , when say facing a charge of public indecency, it would be of little help in your defence to say that because some people on a website say its ok then thats it !
