What is the meaning of life?
I am a deep thinker and always have been!
Reading the forums in the short time I have been here has made me think in ways that I haven’t thought before, so thanks for all the people that have posted. I don’t always agree with their posts but to have the ability to think about their responses can only be good in my opinion.
This whole process of just being here and part of the forums has made me open my mind up to question a lot, one of the things I have always carefully thought about is the meaning of life!
I am happy with what I believe in and lead my life in what makes me and my family happy, so I am very content as none of us really need very much. My views are if we have love, health, food, shelter and clothing, everything else is secondary in my opinion. Not wanting anymore leads to contentment.
One of the questions about life that is puzzling me is: The word NORMAL!
What does NORMAL mean?
I have thought back to the start of civilisation and have thought about what is normal, who said anything is normal. I do believe we need a basic foundation of morals and law.
A code in which we should adhere to and conduct ourselves under the guideance of.
We should not kill.
We should not steal
We should not inflict pain onto anyone else
We should look out and help our fellow man/ woman animals etc
In other words as long as we or our families (meaning children) are not hurting anyone or anything in how we conduct ourselves or inflicting pain, or not using anyone or anything for self gain.
Shouldn’t we be able to do anything that we see as NORMAL without being judged by others?
Hope this makes sense!

You have way too much time on your hands. Ain't you got any hoovering to do? lol
we are here, there is no more meaning than that.
we are all normal, to varying degrees, you set your bench-mark, I'll set mine.

Meaning of life dunno
Whatever you want it to be I reckon....
I'm fecked if I know dunno
I know I'm getting cynical in my old age I suppose, but I'm definitely leaning towards LP's point of view on this. I was born, I am here and I will die. I'm just a bunch of cells that just happens to be here and one day won't.
My bunch of cells have evolved enough that I won't inflict or cause pain to others knowingly and I won't use people to my own ends. I really hope that I have passed that on to the little groups of cells that I have given birth to.
xxx
There isn't one. All we can hope for is to enjoy it while it lasts, and cause as little harm to others as possible.
I saw something once that went along these lines
"I refuse to tip-toe through life to arrive safely at death. When I go, I intend to skid sideways into my coffin, glass in hand, saying 'Man, that was a blast!'"
There is no meaning to life other than the replication of DNA.
Anything one does during that process is purely accidental and immaterial to the eventual outcome - ie an indeterminate version of the DNA that started replicating 4 billion years ago.

it doest make perfect sense to me,Normality is not a rule but a conduct which is judged moral by a group of a society, which varies from country to country, tribe to tribe etc...
but the conduct you've mention dont kill, dont steal, dont hurt, those are rule set to protect us against each other, which also vary from country to country in some states in US first degree murder is punishable by death,so the state does the killing
BUT
there is no law in the land that commands that we should love and be kind to one another so i think its a moral coduct....but neglect is a crime according to the law of tort

What does NORMAL mean?

Sometimes working out what something is is easier if you work out what it isn't first, and at what point in time you start working from.
For example, breathing is normal, the wearing of clothes isn't. If it was we would be born with them. It's an adaptation to our environment whose only purpose was to provide warmth. That evolved into a way to show superiority (Chief's robes etc), then it became a way for others to control us whether it be to prevent the shameful display of our bits or for us to fit in to a particular group. So no, clothes aren't 'normal' they are just what we are used to.
I'm not about to write a book so aren't going to go onto things like lifestyle choices, sexual choices etc as they all follow a similar evolution.
Normal is just whatever the majority of people is used to at any particular time and bears no similarity to what is right or what is wrong.
Love is the meaning of life but that one simple word has a myriad of complex meanings for each person.
Love to me is the big idea, within love we find our mutual beauty, in the giving and the taking of it, in feeling it and in sharing it, in loving and being loved.

strictly speaking, normal is a mathematical term, which has to relate to the sample group,ie, breathing is absolutely normal for us (in fact essential)but for fish, insects and some species that dont even use oxygen at all, breathing is totally abnormal.
the wearing of clothes is a lifestyle choice, usually driven by necessity due to climate,or in the last few hundred years by the religious zealots who took away the innocence of other cultures where the climate was moderate and nudity was the norm

Yup, all the books... several times, but since Adams turned his toes up he hasn't been able to maintain the fiduciary stability of the answer :P

What is the meaning of life?

The meaning of life is a topic vague enough and broad enough for each person in the world to give a different answer, and for each of those answers to be correct from the point of view of the individual who gave the answer....
For me, In a word, It's "incomprehensible" so I just enjoy it! (with other people, alone or in groups, naked or dressed - anyone care to join me)
wink
I found this gteat insight.....
Man is a plot of land: earthy, rough, but replete with potential treasure. Beneath the surface are wellsprings of life-giving waters, reserves of energy, and stores of precious metals and gems. Its soil is alive with the promise of lush crops, ready to sprout forth upon a proper investment of devoted toil.
To access these treasures, one must first have the insight and foresight to look beyond the surface grit. One must carefully probe the terrain and faithfully drill, mine, pump, plow, sow and irrigate in order to reap the rewarding return.
Every human being--surface topology notwithstanding--is rich, fertile soil. Incumbent upon him and his fellows is both an opportunity and responsibility: to unearth and develop his diverse and fruitful resources to the utmost.
I think it explains things quite well as to purpose and potential.....
enjoy
