What makes a man?

What makes a man… a man?
History teaches that men were the battlers, the bread-winners.. Y’ know brawn and face hair, swords, jugs of ale/mead, chauvenism etc… but what of the “Modern Man”… where does he fit into the scheme of things? “Be a man”…,something often said to children when they are hurt from a fall or similar But what does it mean? “Don’t cry”? “Be brave”? and all the other macho things that were said to make a man …a man? So what of the modern man?
Modern man is less fierce than historical man.. not in a war-like manner,( nope man is still a warrior... just better armed), but in the social climate of today. He doesn’t drag his wench around by the arm or order her to do his bidding, etc, but then he is less chivalrous too (in most cases). Modern man is more in touch with his effeminate side and if he were to be suddenly thrown into a historical era then he’d be considered to be a dandy/raving queer. (historically speaking) moralistically man has lost much that made him powerful, his beliefs and code of conduct have been trodden under the feet of evolution and the undeniable rise of his counterpart… the “Modern Woman”- (I’m not chauvinistic)- whom in my opinion would probably do a far better job of overseeing the running of the known world, but never- the- less the majority of women I have spoken to say they "like a man to be a man".. so...
I may not have posed this perfectly correctly, and no intention to cause upset is intended.
So.. my question is…
What is it that makes a Man… Manly?
Paul.

well
1. A X and a Y Chromosome
2. A can of Lynx apparently.
Though seriously, I think men are a manly as they ever were but their rituals, cultures, and social groupings have altered. They now display their prowess, their fierceness in different ways...mainly driving cars i think. The perceived change in "manly-ness" is really a change in social function and attitude not a change in strength and fierceness.

I counted 32 lines before you got to the question!!!That must be a record
As for what makes a man I think it is an X and Y chromosone, but I could be wrong its a long time since I did anything but practical biology

LOL ya musta missed line 1 there...... and ya had to have know I wasn't asking for the bilogical Necessities.. A modern man should at least know those... lol

Lynx eh?? lol I'm ok there...
I'm not so sure about the transport angle cos we just changed from Horse to Horse power. Socially I can see the obvious, and I guess strength wise we are on a par. Fierceness ... Hmmm I see the point you are making but I am sorta differing cos I read and hear every day about the cowarly acts of man.. I know many attrocities were carried out during all the wars, but I'm on about socially within our so called "Safe" society. What I am interested in finding out is whether or not a man who is effeminate, kind, cosiderate etc in his everyday life, is considered a man or something else. Or if it's the burly rough and ready tree chopping macho thing that defines his status as a man. where is the devide and what is it?
Inquisitive sort ain't I? :? :lol: surprised

I think you will find that its a hat and a Penis, thus excluding things like Girafffes that have a penis, but are unable to put a hat on themselves and are too tall for any other creature to do it for them.
yes a hat is definately in the mix. :smug:
What makes a man a man? I think Kippling summed it up best thus:
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!
one tries to live by it, but oft times fails sad

Men are actualy becomming less manly with every year that goes by. Due to our friend the contraception pill ladies now pee estrogen into the water table on a daily basis. Once in the water table estrogen stays there it is not removed. Men then drink the water and therefore its ever increasing content of estrogen and are as a result becomming less and less manly. Estrogen in the water table is thought to be contributing to the 50% drop in sperm counts over the last 100 years. It is thought that male babies born in 50 years time could have a much higher rate of infertility.
Another factor is alcohol. Alcohol stimulates a mans body to become more femenin. Thats why men who drink a lot get man boobs, its literaly what they are.

Hmmm a very interesting obsevation Mr tweeky, and yet another reason for concern... but you have the idea of what I was asking. I'm just coming up to my 43rd birthday and I'm damn sure that when I was a child My father and every male I knew to be an adult were a so different than the present day example... myself included. maybe it's the world we live in that plays the major part in the changing roles of man and woman, and having just checked up on this oestrogen problem it seems there could be a very obvious link between that and the increase in effeminism within the male . interestingly it wouls seem that in countries that don't use contraception the male is very much a man and homosexuality and bi-sexuality are almost non- existant. thanks for that Mr tweeky.

Yep I can see that I guess... I notice you say 'Big Strong arms, protected" so for you it's the escence of the stereotypical hunter gatherer rugged thing. Good answer.. thanks Makingcocoa.

With a society that is increasingly more and more open you can sit for hours wondering where we will be in 100 years time. Barriers become less and less it seems as time goes on I wonder will it continue or will there be some large global event that will focus the attention of mankind.
Mr Tweeky
There are no rites of passage to really progress from child to man, which perhaps not a good thing confused So some younger males may not know in which category they fit.
I liked Pete SW's, Kipling quote, I think that sums it up well.
I also think that moral courage, makes a man biggrin the courage to be honest, to be fair, to be respectful, to be responsible, and to be compassionate :D
A pint of cider also helps lol
In my opinion..:

CC........ :smile2:
what makes a man?
havin a dick and a pair of balls
wink :wink: :wink: :wink:
A man is someone who knows how to protect his woman and is pure male on the outside but on the inside and behind closed doors, he knows how to cherish, love and satisfy his partner.
Not to mention u've got to be a big bad biker!! grruuuuuurrrr!!!!

Oh dear,
Now you’ve got me on my hobby horse, and in my humble opinion, yes I think there will.
This could of course be due to having grown up during the cold war as an army brat, then serving as a civil servant for the MoD for many years, and finally working in the arms and private security industry, but then I prefer to think that its more of just a gut feeling.
OK so you can accurately describe me as having a bunker mentality, and I wouldn’t argue with that, but you know when sometimes you just know?
The British mentality of “ well we’ll just muddle through” sometimes really bites my arse, sometimes I just want to grab people by the collar and shake some sense into them………… shout “WAKE UP AND SMELL THE FALLOUT” but then hey at the end of the day, preparedness is a personal thing and I just sit and shake my head.
But, and getting back to the subject rolleyes yes, when it happens (note when not if) it will take ‘men’ to put things right, and right now, that thought scares me, it scares me when I watch programs on the telly where so called men refuse to skin a rabbit, feel sick at gutting a fish, ache all over because the have dug a small hole, whinge because their sleeping bag is cold :roll:
May god have mercy on us all wave
