Maybe a stupid thing to post, but whilst on my travels today I started to wonder about the sights that I was passing and what they were.
So, me being me, a bit of a muppet, thought it may be an interesting topic, especially with the summer moths looming. Plus of course, with the trillions of members we now have, we must span just about every inch of the country.
So, what am I blabbering about. Well, picture yourself driving along a road and out of the corner of your eye you notice a place name, a building, whatever it may be, and you think, wow, I wonder what the hell that is.
You could then come onto here and ask. Of course, you could just google, but if you don’t know what to search for, well, you could be there for a while. Of course, you could even SHoogle, but then I thought, if anyone does know the place you mean, they may be able to advise if it’s a nice place to visit, take the kids etc etc.
So, to start I have two.
North of the M42, past Brum, maybe half way towards the M1, travelling north, on the left hand side there is what appears to be a church/abbey stuck on the top of a hill – does anyone know what it is?
Coming into Milton Keynes this evening I saw the big wheel illuminated – no problem with that, but silhouetted next to it was what appeared to be a large sloping structure, ski slope maybe?
So there you go, starter for ten …………..

Nope - no castle at Castle Donnington! Donnington Castle is in Berkshire, just to confuse everyone who's ever wondered!!
:P
It is a church in Beedon (Breedon) on the hill.
It has a long and distinguished history I believe and dates back centuries
Below is from the church's website
"Breedon Priory, formerly known as St. Mary and St. Hardulph.
This is a holy place with an authenticated history of Christian worship for over 1300 years. In A.D. 676 an Anglo-Saxon Monastery was established on the hilltop, by Mercian King Aethelred, and for some 200 years this flourished as a centre of culture and crafts.
It was from this building that the remarkable array of Anglo-saxon carved stonework was salvaged, which can be seen in the Church today. But in A.D. 874, the community was attacked by pagan Danish and Norse invaders and buildings looted and despoiled.
The next major step came in A.D. 1122 with the arrival of a Prior and five Canons from Nostell Priory in Yorkshire, who established an Augustian Priory on the site and it is the Nave and North Aisle of this building which survive as the Parish Church of today, restored in later centuries, but still retaining much of its 12th century design and styling."

Calke Abbey is hidden in a dip not far from this site. They hold a couple of music events once a year........classical and pop/rock. It is run by the "Heritage"? people and well worth a visit to. Deer run wild in the park. It is a beautiful place to visit.

As Dave_Notts so brilliantly remembered - Breedon Church.
Shamed to say that I've actually visited it!

Ok, this one has bugged me for quite some time.
Come off the M4 at junction 19 and head into Bristol on the M32, somewhere along there, on the right on a hill is a huge old manor type house but massively bigger, could even be an old mill, workhouse, whatever.
Not sure if its still there as the last time I went past there all the windows had been hit out and there was a big sign saying ‘available for redevelopment.
Historically it looked really interesting, any ideas ?
dunno
Ok... just call me Mrs Vague redface
This thread has got my mind thinking... driving south on the M1 towards the M25 (quite near the M25 at this point I think surprisedopssmile and there is a wind turbine on my right and what also looks like an old abbey/monastery.
Every time I see it I wonder what it is.

I think I know which building you mean Pete, although I don't have an answer. :dunno:
I wonder if its anything to do with the old Brass works. If it is, it has tons of history relevant to Bristol.
