I was in Kent training to be posted to Northern Ireland
Having my nappy changed and throwing a tantrum probably! I was only two! lol
I woke up to Imagine (on my clock radio, remember them? lol) and got dressed while more Lennon songs were played and they were still on when I brushed my teeth.....I turned to my then partner (now VERY much ex!) and said 'God, you would have thought he had died the way they keep playing his songs today!' rolleyes
plonker confused
sad
Nice idea for a thread Luke smile
I was crashed out on a mattress on the floor of a squat in West Hampstead when I was woken up very early at around 10am by a mate who'd just called around. He kept pointing at the television which was sat on its TV stand (aka orange crate) repeating, "Turn on the telly". So I started to stroke the telly sensuously until it was really turned on. Er, I mean I flicked the switch and saw the first broadcast of what must have been the precursor to 24 hour news channels.
Stunned disbelief. The first stage in the cycle of grief. Shock.
Sad that anyone should die in that way - murdered.
John Lennon? Wrote some good songs, full stop.
Sorry, but he wasn't that important in my life.
25 years ago i would have been 13 and in second year at Seconadary school. I still remember it though i was a sad day sad
Carol
I was eight but remember the day clearly. We were being taken to school by my mum in the car and it came on the radio he had died. She pulled over and started to cry. We understood why because she always played his music going to school. One of my early childhood memories. Good thing is we always have his music ot listen to.
I was 13 years old and off school with adolescent man flu.
I remember feeling deep sadness. I already appreciated the quality of Lennon's contribution to popular music culture, particularly as one quarter of The Beatles.

I haven't got a bluddy clue, and personally I don't consider it important....
Now who wants to shag me on Friday night? far more important to me

This might seem callous but I kind of agree, I was 18, could have been doing anyhting but I'm sure it was fun.
I understand that John Lennon is an icon to many but, have to admit, never liked The Beatles (ok the odd song is great but....) and also slightly suspicious of anyone who sings 'Imagine no possessions' whilst owning an apartment just to keep fur coats stored at the right temperature!!!
PS This is not to say, of course, that I ever wanted the poor bloke dead, just don't like building up anyone to be 'gods'

Phew, thankfully another that agrees.....everyone usually jumps down my throat when I say I don't really care for the music of the Beatles or John Lennon that much

I get the same response when I say that - no interest in their/his music whatsoever...although the fact that he died at the hands of another person is very sad.
I don't really remember it clearly as I was only 10 at the time - I was probably more concerned with what I was getting for Christmas.

MikeC...... I wasn't conceived until February 1981, so I wasn't even a glint in my parents eyes when Lennon was shot, can't possibly be a reincarnation or anything like that... anyway, I'm not musical enough to claim I am!

As an addendum to my earlier post I have to admit that the way John Lennon has been canonized since his death seems to have been at the expense of the reputation of the other Beatles.
Like Paul McCartney, Lennon's post-Beatles solo career was very patchy, with good albums interspersed with dross.
It also seems that unlike a lot of the western world I believe Imagine (the song, as opposed to the album) is extremely overrated and is not only NOT the best song ever written, but is not even the best song on that particular album. (The excellent Jealous Guy is IMHO).

i was probably listening to cheesey 80's music round a freinds house whilst on the knock from school..

Totally with you BasketCase...I'm so relieved, I've commented on Lennon being over-rated on other sites and been practically burnt alive....and no one can tell me I don't know music, I have over 6000 CDs, from almost every genre and decade of the last century..just nothing by Lennon sad
I'm another youngun, it would have been about two years before I was even conceived!
Either working or at home enjoying my (then) 15 months old daughter, Mrs was 4 months pregnant with our son............... Both are grown up now and Mrs a distant memory..
H doesn't know what she was doing, but being 19 at the time thinks it probably involved work, drinking, and shagging
M
I was 3 years old when he was killed, but was imformed by my parents I was napping, not a lot has changed in 25 years

Just wanted to start a thread with something that matters to me!!
Tomorrow is the 25th anniversary of the death of John Lennon, one of the most important figures in the development of popular music of the last century.
I had overslept, woken next to my wife and we made love, I got to work very late with a smile on my face and a spring in my step, the day had started in a wonderful way! I had a cup of tea and switched on the radio!
Every thing went down hill from there, All the radio channels were full of the news coming from New York that Lennon had been shot as he returned home by a single gunman Mark Chapman, a Beatles Fan!
As someone who had grown up listening to the Beatles, had his first kiss and had lost his cherry while their music was playing in the background the news was shattering.
The impact of his music cannot be over stated to die in such a mindless way at such a young age was such a waste!
So tonight the T.V. gets switched off and the music played
Luke

Yesterday was so sad.....I remember it so well...but still find it difficult to talk about - my Lennon Legend CD was played again and again........ Always think what he wouild have done if he lived...
No idea....... lol
Probably down the stables mucking out.......... lol
equi-princess xxx
Watching my dad mope around the house trying to comprehend Lennon's death - I'm from Liverpool and he was/is a HUGE Beatles fan biggrin
I was still a twinkle in my parents eyes. I may be young, but still a huge Beatles fan.
I was in my mummy's tummy.
I've never been a fan of the Beatles but JL did write some good songs and stuff so fair play to him. It wasn't good that he was murdered but unfortunately that's the way of the world.
