I kind of view the profile as a person's 'shop window' - it sets out the info they want folk to know and any pictures they want to add.
Now, I don't generally advertise but if people are browsing profiles and they like the look of mine and contact me, who am I to complain?
dunno
years ago when the site first started out profiles were very very limited on what info they gave or could be inputted.
i see my profile as just a umm profile, sorry thats flippant, but its a description of who i am. female, age, location. it is not a AD.
if someone were to message me in a friendly manner as they had come across my profile i would reply,if they are blatent looking for sex and think they are replying to a ad i tend to be more inclined to ignore them.
if im activly seeking sex i place an ad,or i browse the ads, not the profiles.
hope i make some sense

it's for showing the shape of your face/head from the side against a strong light, placing the outline in shadow.
Three quarter profiles can be a little confusing.

Profiles should say this is us, this is what we like, this is where we are. I think some people just look at the pics tho and dont bother reading the words, esp the bit where they say "i know i`m not what you are looking for but...." rolleyes
Its sometimes for advertising, often times for laying down the law before you know owt about anyone, and in a few cases its useful for masturbation if the pictures are good. As a general rule of what the profiles are mainly used for by the most amount of members most regularly I would say categorically the latter.

Its a document on a prostitute
Its a better quality wood/metaworking tool
Its a condom thing - profileylactic
I see it less of an ad, and more of a summary.
Also, for me, it's far less about "where I am going to", and more about "where I am coming from".
I don't place a great deal of stock in profiles, since so often the book cover failed to capture the real nature of the book (but didn't misrepresent). That said - I used it to add a little context / help for my chat chat (which can be seen as a little abrasive or sarcastic). I wanted to be honest about what I think, but also show that thinking people are idiots doesn't exclude myself from that list.
"coming from", not "going to"
You pays yer money and you take yer choice.
Profiles can be used as a shop front or a filter. I prefer the filter approach since adverts are ideal if I want a shop front.
Not all attention is good attention is it?
