Isaac Asimov and RA Heinlein both happily described themselves as dirty old men towards the end of their lives - why should it be an insult? I think the influence of Benny Hill and that generation where sex was a naughty deed carried out behind closed curtains may be finally dead.

A dirty old man - an older man who has a fixation on juvenile women, who is totally absorbed in his own desires and lays on his advances without consideration, even when they are totally unwelcome, or sometimes exactly because of it (ie. getting a kick out of making uncomfortable - it is a power game). Sure everyone is attracted to youth, and older man/younger woman is a popular coupling choice - but a dirty old man is something different: he is the guy that touches up students on the bus, who will tell age-inappropriate stories to his younger relatives, who will try to engage girls in conversation or just run a commentary, who will try to expose themselves etc etc, you get the idea! On a lighter note yes, "dirty old man" can mean the older someone who still has a active interest in sex - but I agree with jason on that one, only prudes would call such a man "dirty" (60 is the new 40! There are a lot of older sexually active people nowadays, both men and women).

Only someone who's under 50 would even ask the question. The point is that everyone will (hopefully) get to an age where you may qualify. Whats a bit of a nudge nudge laugh about dirty old men as if they are another species entirely when you are 30-40.... is actually a bit of a worry over 50 (ish). You feel the same as you did when 30 or 40 but you don't look the same and people react to you differently. Like being no longer welcome at a club you like...
Only your good common sense will protect you from the description as your desires will probably be the same, just less appropriate to the rest of the population. Sobering thought I guess but spare a thought for the older guys who still feel like the 30-40s but no longer look it.
Bit of a serious post this, sorry if its a downer in some ways....
