I was just outside chatting to my elderly neighbour passing the time of day etc.
When I come in it got me thinking, I know of some people that have lived in their roads for years and very vary talk to their neighbours.
During the warmer months my doors are open kids in and out, and I am not meaning just mine.
I live in London in a very cosmopolitan area we all look out for each other where I live, standard rule that we all just do.
Where has the community spirit gone?
Are people just busy getting on with their own life’s not taking to much notice what’s going on around them?
Most of my neighbours only know me by "her at number !! or tan or "the mother of that hyper child"
its not my home town though, the village i used to live in was rife with not so neighbourly spirit and i like the quietness that people dont know everything i do
It's thriving in my village
I live in a street ot terraced houses in a suburban town.
I think our local community would improve significantly if folk did have their doors open and were able to see out of their windows.
I blame net curtains for the break down in communities.
When I was a kid the only curtains we had were cotton wool sacks stolen from southalls in alum rock and bleached with lye soap and a pumice stone.
Nobody had a lock on their door and u could get a second hand spitfire for 3 bob and a brace of rabbits.
If a copper caught you inflating frogs with a straw hed give u a clip round the ear and a licquorice.
Happy days Im off to the age exschnage reminiscence centre

Cherry i am sure ben would be more than happy! :rascal: come and join us!
This might be my age but I have never really got to know my neighbours I can be quite ill mined and find it hard to trust people so I tend not to bother I keep my self to my self and get on with it im prob the nasty lady up the road that wouldnt give a kid its ball back lol its hard to know who is a 'neighbour' and who is eyeing up what stuff they can rob. Its prob because the village I lived in as a kid had lots of dodgy people in it. rolleyes

Community spirit? you've got to be kidding??!! community nosiness more like!
I live in a street of proper curtain twitchers and one daft cow who isn't content until she pulls all the neighbours to bits that dare cross her. Her nose is so stuck in everyone's business she cannot breath properly.

where has the community spirit gone?
was there every any community spirit..
i live in birmingham and havent noticed any at all...
so if someone can find community spirit please let me know where i can get it and throw it around the local community where i live.......
As I said- it's alive & well here. Theres a very sick little boy in our village- the community has raised thousands over the last few years to provide him with equipment to make his life better.
When my (spinster) neighbours mum died, I spent days cleaning the house to make life easier for her to start again on her own. I looked like a chimney sweep. confused
Last night, we had a call from our neighbour who's dad is critically ill in Spain. Within minutes, it was arranged for me to look after their little boy. Mr W got out of bed at 4 am this morning to take our neighbour to the train station.
Most of the people round here rally round like that. Although we've not always been this fortunate. Having said that- I have learned that you get out what you put in.

community spirit is what you make of it...like anything if you going to wait for someone else to start it off...your be waiting along time...
I remember when I first moved into the area in which I now live...
thinking it a fresh start and chance to make a positive change in myself etc etc.
so... as the sun shone in the late October of my arrival, my heart was light whenever I strolled out of or towards the block, I had a sunny disposition as well as a greeting for my nieghbours should I see any.
A 'hello, how are you?' etc.. with a line like: 'I've just moved into number blahblah, nice to meet you' at the ready.
When ever I attempted this, the return would be strong looks of mistrust, derission or even fear.
There was no residents association or the like in the area at the time, and I'd like to think that it was partly down to my talking with the council that got one set up for a while... a chance to get to know my nieghbours, and join together in brightening and improving our environment for all concerned.
nice one... two birds-one stone and all that!
Nope... admittedly, the council did have their own agenda, and did interfere a bit... but there was so much selfishness and infighting amongst my local 'community' that it all fell aprt in a bitter and fractured mess.
community spirit?... round here?
fuck'em
