Sheddy bought a tom tom one the other day and apparently it's brilliant although I can't really comment as I've only been allowed to use it inside the flat 
and there's not really much you can do with one whilst confined to a 700sqft area 
But I'm being allowed to take it tomorrow to go to Birmingham so I'll report my findings when I get back on Thursday
I have alread had about six lectures on the importance of not leaving it in the car despite the fact that he knows that I had a client have one pinched from my work car park and that I was present when the man who fixed their window gave them a lecture and told them that it's pretty much doubled their work load.......but I'm sure I'll have the lecture a few more times anyway before I go..... :roll:

Great thread as I am looking more for a speed camera detector with sat nav as an addition, rather than sat nav being the main purchase.
I had been looking at the road angel 6000 but looks like Tom Tom is the one to go for based on the comments on here.

Ok still on Sat Navs anyone had experiance of systems on a mobile phone
i just ordered a Nokia 6288 on voda and am trying to see if i can get tom tom s/ware for it.
No problem getting a GPS reciever just software
Its not symbian based so the latest tom tom pda s/ware wont work so am tryting to locat the tom tom mobile pack that is now discontinued and i not sure why.

Have you thought of going for a PDA with built-in GPS. You can get a Mio P550 with TomTom pre-installed for about £250 now.
This is more than comparable with the price of a dedicated satnav and you get the benefits of a PDA - word procesing, spreadsheets, calendar, appts, games, voice recorder, plays MP3s, store & view pics, lets you watch films and a myriad of almost any other application you can think of out there on the net to download and install.
The Mio P550 also has bult-in bluetooth for PC connection and built-in WiFi so you can connect to the net (wherever a wirelss network exists of course). Just thnk you can be on SH anywhere and everywhere
One of the best gadgets I ever bought.
For tha same price as a dedicated satnav it seems a no-brainer to me - go for the PDA.

Reckon you could combine the two?, What swinging swag would you put in the final cache box. Or how about a multi-cache where you have to take off an item of clothing or do a naughty task before you can go to the next one.

didn't realise some were so cheap, use mine for satnav, music and films mainly. Oh and I've got OS maps on there as well for walking.

Crikey............Its a veritable minefield out there now with every man and his dog producing a satnav of some description which is why I asked the masses..
There have been some usefull suggestions in this thread though..
Definately some food for thought...

So with the film deliverance in mind and dueling banjo's playing from some place in the background I typed in the hotel name 5 minutes later we had reached our detination again. Only this time it was the middle of a park and I mean literaly we were sat in the middle of a park :? So if in doubt ask a parky. "yep its 2 streets away" he tells us :D So hotel was found in nips PK checks we had the right post code which we did :? so all I can sumise is as those who've tried to find PKHQ with sat nav of most types will tell you if the building is less than a couple of years old use an A to Z or just use the old fashioned way and ask people :roll:
i have a tomtom 700 with all uk and europe on along with the speed cameras.
it is invaluable especially as you can use it as a handsfree kit for the phone, and the weather and traffic functions are great too.
can even get the US maps like i did last year for a small fee.

I remember one of my first introductions to modern teknologys. It was back when everyone was getting a hard on for the new, super fast 396 processors :shock:

TomTom is little more than an electronic map. Very few maps, even on the day of publication - let alone when first actually used are completely up to date.

I think over the past 10/15 years we could have allowed ourselves to become a little too reliant and for too blindly trusting of this teknology thing.

Let's not forget - some of these magic little boxes may have been sat in a cardboard box for longer than we might imagine, so updating them becomes vital.

I must say, I was a little disappointed at the frequency (or lack of) that the mapping is updated by the providers.
Several points:
Take your unit out of the windscreen before you park it. That way the toads that nick them will not know whether to mug you or not.
The police regularly give out data stating they operate mobile speed cams at A, B and C...and don't. You'll be the only one driving at a slower-than-legal speed. You'll not be popular !
The road safety act will be law soon, this outlaws NON-gps based speed camera detectors.
And finally....the funding arrangement that pays for the various "safety" camera partnerships ends soon. All the money stolen by speed cameras will be paid to the home office. The DfT states that it hopes the partnerships will keep to making the cameras easily noticeable, but will not enforce it. the local partnership has already stated that all cameras will NOT be marked, there will be MORE, and they will be placed where they are needed instead of where there is a history of accidents.

Let me know what you get and how it works out. Ive not got a Sat Nav since the amount of journeys I make are so few and frankly google maps and my sense of where I am hasnt been bad so far.
I do wonder though if we all had personal sat navs then maybe we could remove all the street signs which would no longer be necessary.

We got one of the first Tom Tom Go 700's when they came out a few years ago and have used it in the UK, Europe and North America and it's been brilliant.
The only fault was when the temperature was -25 deg C and the windscreen sucker attachment sometimes gave up and the driver would have to make a deft catch as it fell off.
Deleted all the extra voices we "acquired" just leaving Jane - she sounds so authoritative as she gives directions. Now if only there was a Mistress Jane voice.....
