We are looking into buying a sat-nav..
We seem to be borrowing my friends more and more often now so thought it may be a good time to get our own...
I dont want to spend hundreds of pounds but dont want a cheap nasty one either confused
So I'm asking the advice of the masses on this one...
Any ideas guys'n'gals :?:
A while ago someone gave me two to try.
I decided to get one for HLB after it took her 5 hours to do the 2 and a half hour journey to Deeside rolleyes
I tried RoadAngel, which was more lie a Speed camera/Safety Blackspot unit that also did navigation . .
and
TomTome One, which seem to be navigation with a speed cameras function.
Purely from a navigation point of view I settle on the TomTom One. It was the cheapest of the range, but other than battery life, size of the unit and European Mapping, I couldn't see the difference between if=t and the more expensive versions.
And it's small enough to go in her handbags without looking like she's carrying a half house brick.
redface - For all I've said about them in the past, I even have one for myself in the truck and it fits in my inside pocket without looking as though I have a Smith and Wesson.
Google maps dunno
bolt
We have the tom tom one and have the software for the speed cameras they are about ?170 it is easy to use the touch screen .

tom tom beats garmin (so is the opinion of the twenty or so users in my office.
Make sure you get full postcode mapping, cos some of the cheap ones only do partial postcodes and that could get you miles away.

We looked at one in the electrical store where we bought our television from today... It was
Not sure if anyone has seen/heard of it before dunno
I've recently started to use TomTom and I love it :bounce:
I did screw it up once though and reset all the settings so got my legs slapped redface

well i have fat fingers and find its ok it also has a little point thing like a pda and the screen is very clear lol
Go with the TomTom, Jane get me there every time.
In house joke.
We both have a Tom Tom and find it invaluable for getting around the country. Ocassionally you find yourself on a sheep track, a car park or the wrong way on a one way street, but for 99% of the time they are great. One of the best toys I ever bought!! lol
Mal
cool
Tom Tom One here too with speed camera data from here...
Always best to check alternative routes to the fastest though as it will sometimes send you an extra 20 miles to save 5 mins. !
I like the Navman F20
Cheap, !£150
slim fits in my jacket pocket
Simple to use good size screen 3D mapping everything you need back on track nearest fuel station etc
The size of the screen is important becase when they are stuck to the windscreen they are alot further away from you than in the shop and the small ones can be difficult to read
You have to be aware alot of the more expensive ones have full european maps in them
If you dont intend using them abroad then you can spend lots less and go for the UK only ones
try a big halfords they have most of them all on display then shop arround when you have settled on one
We have the Navman and I personally hate it, it's a nightmare to control and the buttons keep sticking so the voice over keeps repeating the next turn! lol.. other than that I've heard better reports about the TomTom.
Bought a Tom Tom 500 12 months ago
As well as numerous detinations found in UK with no problem,it has
also taken me to addresses in Holland,Germany and France, right to
the doorway.
It also picks out thousnds of hotels, ferry terminals, car parks etc as
well as having free speed camera warning download.
Would definitley recomend it (although I think new version is 510)

Tom Tom's the DADDY biggrin :D
Great thread as I am looking more for a speed camera detector with sat nav as an addition, rather than sat nav being the main purchase.
I had been looking at the road angel 6000 but looks like Tom Tom is the one to go for based on the comments on here.
Thanks.

Our TomTom Moo's every time we approach a speed camera and it makes me smile everytime :lol2:
Tom Tom Go300 - does exactly waht it says on the tin
Best piece of electronic gizmo I've ever bought, remove your mount off windscreen when not in use, cos the little scrotes will break in to try and find it, as I found out, for new mount and for gen charger

And also dont forget to wipe the screen where the mount has been as it leaves a tell tale mark on the screen smile
TomTom too - though it's loaded on a PDA which now sits in a metal cradle which is in the dashboard with the wires for the satellite receiver hidden away. Means I get the help of a brilliant sat nav with the usefulness of a PDA too.
Now I use it even for regular trips just in case there are roadblocks or accidents and I need to get a new route quickly.
:P
Take a look at Garmin Sat Navs. I have two. The cheapest one in the range and it is fantastic, I gave this to one of my employees and now have the touch screen one which is also great. For the money it knocks spots of the Tom Tom, With the Tom Tom your are paying for all those annoying ads on top of the Sat Nav :-) good reason not to buy one lol
I've never seen an ad on my Tom Tom - ever!!
Mal
cool
That would be the TV ads asking you to buy a TomTom.

Thats how we run our TomTom and it is most excellent. It is also a nice size for carrying around with you and can be used it as a back up phone if I need to
(I can also MSN on it, just not too often or I'd get my legs slapped :lol2smile
(I've been known to connect to random peoples wireless internet too)
Dawnie, do you pay extra for the one which slaps your legs? That is twice it has happened to you now. biggrin
Off on a research mission this morning, where is me map? :D :D

I think the slaps happen when I make Ian pay extra redface
Only problem is, I quite like it :giggle:
we have a garmin, it does the job, and i think it does speed cameras as well! we got garmin as we do GEOCACHING and have a garmin GPS as well, and can use the same mapping software in both!
