I don't know if this has been done before but i havent got the time to check,so if it has :kissmyarse: .
Who's the greatest actors/actresses of all time?????
You can't deny that Robert De Nero in his prime was beathtaking.I know that he's done some right pants films lately but go back to the 70's,80's and even the 90's and there are some right corkers.
Jack Nickelson has in my opinion always done fantastic roles,he makes every character his own and has recently varied his roles considerably.
Tom Hanks, since his role in Sleepless in Seatle has done amazing role after amazing can forget Philidelphia and Forest Gump, two of the greatest films ever, made geat by his 's still doing awesome roles now and will do for the foreseable future it looks like.
As for actresses i can't actually think of any standout ones at the moment,so i'll leave them up to you.
Tommy Lee Jones, Pacino and the ever underrated Matt Damon
Agree with De Niro and Nicholson
As for the Ladies
Julia Roberts and Whoopi Goldberg
Never said it was a great film but it isnt in the top 100 worst films of all time (according to the internet movie database)
Julia Roberts is pleasant, but not a very good actress. She won an Oscar for Erin Brockovich because Hollywood likes bankable actors who can bring in the dollars. It was a one-note "I am sassy but vulnerable" performance.
Bad Julia Roberts films:
Mona Lisa Smile
America's Sweethearts
Erin Brockovich
Runaway Bride
Notting Hill
Stepmom
Conspiracy Theory
My Best Friend's Wedding
Michael Collins
Mary Reilly
Prêt-à -Porter
I Love Trouble
The Pelican Brief
Hook
Dying Young
Sleeping with the Enemy
Pretty Woman
Steel Magnolias
Ok Julia Roberts films:
Mystic Pizza
Oceans Eleven
Greg your a star mate, thank you for proving my point.
Now can anyone actually think of any great actresses??????
There are plenty of good actresses around at the moment, although many of them are not household names. Naomi Watts is great. I like Olivia Williams. Samantha Morton is good. Nicole Kidman is great is some things, although patchy in others. Cate Blanchett is great. Jennifer Connelly is good.
The main problem is this: Hollywood stops writing good roles for women after the hit 40. De Niro, Pacino, Hoffman...etc... all get older and get good film roles. Most of their female contemporaries just got offloaded instead of getting juicy film roles.
Maybe we have to trawl back to the depths of film to find our great actress then
Those of you that know me will know that I'm nuts on films-in addition to being just nuts...
I've been thinking about this thread and I can't seperate actors from individual films that have seared themselves into my tiny mind. For example:
Jack Hawkins: 'The Cruel Sea'
Charles Lawton : 'Hobson's Choice'
Audrey Hepburn: 'Breakfast at Tiffany's'
Audrey Tatou: 'Amelie'
Marlon Brando: 'On The Waterfront'
Henry Fonda : 'Once upon a Time in The West'
Gary Cooper: 'High Noon'
Alan Ladd:'Shane'
Haley Joel Osmont: 'The Sixth Sense'
Bogart:'To Have and To Have Not'
Massimo Troisi: 'Il Postino'-(a tragedy he died straight afterwards)
Robert Mitchum: 'Night of The Hunter'.
Lee Marvin: 'The Big Red One'
Others have produced great works together with some ropey stuff:
De Niro: 'Raging Bull' was awesome but 'Cape Fear' was a travesty of the original. But he would be my number three.
For sheer screen presence, that power that comes across, there are several candidates: John Wayne (don't laugh!-just watch 'The Searchers' ), Bogart, Ed Harris, Robert Duvall, Walter Matthau-was ther ever better acting than Charlie Varrick,-early Brando, Bettie Davis, Sean Connery, Morgan Freeman and the great, dignified, Burt Lancaster, Paul Newman.
but my number two-just ahead of Connery, Newman and Burt Lancaster, would be James Stewart, for sheer consistency. He never made a bad film, played a range of genres , characters and ages better than anyone. 'I think of 'Harvey', 'It's a Wonderful Life', 'Spirit of Saint Louis', ' 'The Philadelphia Story'......
My number one actor would (probably) be seconded by no-one here, but I nominate Montgomery Clift. He had a magical screen presence,a sensitivity and air of bruised brilliance that made his early death at 46 a tragedy. Watch 'From Here To Eternity' or 'Red River'.
Sorry for long thread-you shouldn't put film threads up!!
Happy to talk by PM about films....
A.
well...what about my name sake.....James Dean
had such great charisma...and as he died young didn't see him deteriate at all.
Got to be up there with the greats.
Jimmy Stewart is one of my all time faves.....
Especially 'Harvey' and the tremendous 'it's a Wonderful Life!
And Agricola - I had forgotten Montgomery Cliff - maybe not a personal favourite, but a great actor. And I remember 99% of the films you mentions - classics all!
My favourite at the moment is Johnny Depp - especially in Benny & Joon!
Maybe not in the same class another two people that 'do it for me' are
Harrison Ford... (Dan Solo - where are you?) and
Mel Gibson. Or maybe I like these for entirely selfish reasons.
But.... I also like Julia Roberts! And I loved HOOK!
Favourite Film Stars....
I love Christian Slater - Heathers is one of my most favourite films
Love George Clooney too - Oceans Eleven - sexy.
Love Harrison Ford - anything that he is in
Pierce Brosnan - James Bond - I am a James Bond Freak.
John Travolta - Saturday Night Fever......favourite film of all time
Pacino
Nic Cage
Gary Oldman
Ray Winston
Bette Davis
Susan Sarrandon
Joe Pesci
Too many!!!!
