Sorry Phil, I think you are missing the whole point of the forum against chatroom dilemma. Mind you, could you imagine if all of the forum members came into the chatroom one night? That is well over 11500 users. Who would get a word in? in would be able to read that quickly? What if one person would miss the session then they would never know what had been said.
That is one of the reasons we chat in here. The other is so we can all perv at the gorgeous avatars and funny gifs Sgt Bilko brings to us.

It's a case of different places for different styles of chat.
In the forums you can take your time, put some thought in, choose you words wisely
In the chatroom, it's fast & furious, one-liners only, if someone's not there, they don't exist.

The chat room requires your undivided attention because it's real-time. The forum allows a delayed response when you're busy doing other things, which wouldn't be possible in chat. You can't do chat room type chat in the forum and you can't do forum type chat in the chat room. They're completely different and don't really bear the comparison you're making.

i am exactly the same.... never used the chatroom but love the forums, i suppose it is working at a different speed and because you have more time to write, i think is a much better way of getting to know people......
