Windows Vista has just been launched. Our PC is big enough to run it and we have read the blurb on what it does .
Has any one used it yet and can anyone explain in normal language what it will really mean for us.
we use our pc for this site , will it improve or affect it. ?and normal e mail stuff. My husband does a lot of surfing and research into local history etc. we dont play games on we do watch movies.

Ahh we were going to get Vista this w/end biggrin as we have a new pc & it comes as a upgrade . Think we will wait awhile now with all this negative feedback
Be careful, I've heard people saying it's messed up their whole computers!.. don't know much about it myself tho. confused
WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT
give it six months to iron out the shit that will go with it if you want to retain your sanity.#
tell me this is your current system working ok
if it is why change it???????
If your current OS is working there is no need to spend money on Vista. It does need atleast 1 Gig of RAM if you have less you may not be able to multi-task all the programs you do now.
Like all window OPs it is always under development to the day it goes obsolete. Hence update packages. If you are buying new then go vista, it's a good view.
...but remember 'The evil of good is better.'
well i havent used it as yet. I am very anti the DRM system, and the fact you have to buy a new version everytime you upgarde a motherboard (according to reports)////
not happy, xp is fine for now.........linux rules

Thankyou for all the feedback. we went round to somebodies house last night to see it on their PC. it looks pretty but doesnt do anything I cant do now. I allready have a good firewall and virus protection. I manage and edit pictures with Adobe and ust couldnt see anything better just different. He too has had problems with running his exisiting softeware . And it has crashed more than once.
so in light of what we saw and the good feedback from you people we have decided to give it a miss .
many thanks for the feedback and happy swinging

fiftyfun, the main new feature of Vista is the new Aero glass interface, how did you find that?
I go with what others have said about "why?".
What do people expect Vista to really do that XP doesn't already? No matter how much MS want to add bloat (usually nicked from third party companies they buy up and dismantle) and eye candy, the truth is the most important part you want from MS is the operating system. Everything on top is applications/ software, and everything from a basic text editor to a fully featured media suite can be found elsewhere, often for legitimately free. XP as an OS is stable and not too resource hungry, Vista is unlikely to prove more stable for the average user, and will eat more power. It's a bit of a con really - You need to keep buying ever more powerful hardware to run ever more bloated software, just to do the same job at the same speed as your old hardware and software. And the spectre of drm needs to be seriously considered - Certainly I don't want any form of "rights management" on my computer.
Basically, you really don't need the latest in everything unless it offers something you simply cannot currently do but need to. But the manufacturers need you to believe you do need the latest and greatest to do anything, otherwise they'd go bust. Save your time money and sanity, and stick with a tried and tested product that works smile
I am going to be the sanctimonious Mac user now who always comes along at times like this and say that Mac OSX is fast, powerful, multi-featured, pretty, easy to use, secure and stable.
I have heard that Vista will be the last OS Microsoft ever bring out as it was so phenomenonly expensive to develop and it took so long. With excellent operating systems being developed all the time that take up so little space, are fast and stable and, what is more, absolutely free of charge, it may never be worth their while again.
My next move will be to buy a case, monitor and keyboard, add on the HD, sound card and so on myself and then run Linux on it. It's cheaper and when a compnent goes wrong you can have it replaced within the hour.
Richard
Yes.
Gotta agree with linux.
But, my xp-pc has to run a non-ms firewall to stop xp spending all its time chatting to ms !
And no....i don't run vista.....
And ....ms can stick the drm where the sun don't shine....

OK, so you won't be able to read this. But it's on the front page of the internet site of swedish newspaper Aftonbladet today. "Voice mail in Vista can destroy documtents" is the content. There is probably an english article out there somewhere as well. Apparently, Vista has a voice recognition thing that allows you to command the computer. So people sent mail with an MP3 that instructed the computer to delete files and empty the trash so they couldn't be restored.
Microsoft's reply: "Well, the speakers and the microphone has to be turned on, and the voice recognition has to be activated, so we don't consider it as a serious threat". Of course, the whole thing seems kind of like a joke, but if someone sent me a mail that made my work be deleted at the end of a day when the backup haven't been made... I would be pretty angry. It doesn't say if it is actually possible to delete system files though, or if it is only documents and personal files.
The strange thing is that, over the years I have junked many of the components of xp that vista claims to have radically now fixed, in favour of 3rd party software that actualy worked. Strange because from what I can see, microsoft now seem to have just copied this 3rd party technology and stuffed it into vista !

Well actually the "aeroglass" is only a new theme. Its just cosmetic. Talking of which, you too can have vista for free ! yes, well not quite. its still xp but with all the "vista" interface. just googesearch for the " windows vista transformation pack" version 6 final is what I got and I think it looks quite good.
Hi being using rc 1 for a few months which is the £250 upgrade version all bells and whistles, when this is turn of in june i will not be purchasing the full version it as driver issues lock ups slow booting even though i ran the games for windows test which said the pc was in the top 7% in the world which had being tested by them.

Will try it out on a test PC
Don't be a Ginnie Pig
From my many years with computers and programmes, never be the first batch of mugs to try them out.
YOU WILL HAVE PROBLEMS.
As there are so many different manufactures of different add on boxes & software there is always problems with the first releases of any software/gismo boxes.
You may have noticed that XP is only now slowing down with de-bud upgrades, this says it all.
I have only just moved up from 98SE to XP with no stress and I still have my hair.
As mentioned XP was MEM hungry, but Vista is more so, but this is not the problem its the bits that will not work that cause the hart attack that's after years of beta testing.
In conclusion, Wait until the next new launch, then Visa will be OK.
The only reason new products are launched is to get you to upgrade & spend more money without it the company's would not exist.

Welcome to the world of open source, welcome to the future.
It will be interesting to see where MS goes after Vista, especially with their recent investment in Linux (Novell)
I have to say, on my laptop I run Vista and SuSE (seperate disks), depends on what Customer I am with, dictates what OS I use.
I have only just loaded Vista, but so far, it looks pretty good. Fair enough, it is pretty intensive with regards to resource, but heck programmers are lazy by nature, so they use whatever is available to make their life easier innocent
biggrin
ordered a laptop before christmas, it only just arrivd today. point being the one i ordered was windows xp, due to the delay the one arrived this morning with vista home premium.
i dont like change, but moving to a laptop from pc is change anyhow so have been getting to grips with both today.
cant say its making anything run slow as i bought the dogs b****ks in lap tops. it all seems ok to me, but it is only day one.
xx fem xx
Well, went out and bought a copy, OEM version, so saved myself a few quid. Retail home premium £200+, OEM version £60, so not to bad.
Over all, yes it is very memory hungry, but then again so was XP when it first came out. If i remember rightly, could run on 512Mb but need 1Gb. Vista is much in the same, will run ok with 1Gb, but really needs 2Gb. But if you consider the cost of memory now this is not such a bad thing.
Installed fine, though had a few issues with IE, defult settings are very security concious, but other than that is very nice.
If anyone is have any issues or problems with running or installing Vista I would be more than happy to help.
Krak.
Cant vouch for Vista but I have XP on laptop and Ubuntu linux on desktop. I am no techie - just use for surfing, emails, word
excel and a few games. Oh - and MSN! Of the 2, I prefer the Ubuntu desktop - much quicker to load, much less memory invasive and no need to top up Bill Gates pension plan either!
Annoying thing about XP is that it keeps trying to download patches you do not want, it is inherently not secure (compared to linux), is the most untidy operating system out (same with all Windows editions)
Finally, internet explorer is now onto version 7 (which you get with Vista but is already on XP - I dont like the look/feel of it and it is a poor copy of some of the other well established browsers such as firefox.
personally - ditch Microsoft and go Linux
I've got a funny feeling that vista is going to be the same as all microsofts products. Crap. They deliberately make them flawed so you keep buying more software. Vista will prob be as bad as windows ME.
