Looks liike my taste buds are starting to mature from random larger to wines - really getting into red wine at the moment.
Can anyone suggest some really good stuff? - i've been frightened to spend over £10 on a a bottle in case i hate it, so before i start spending over a tenner on a bottle i thought i'd ask for recommendations.
So whats your fav? Also partial to a drop of white from time to time
a real cheep wine that tastes realy nice

How much about are we talking?? - Paul Masons - would a supermarket stock it?
If i see it i'll give it a try!
From Italy a Barola, not sure that's spelt correctly and you will struggle to get a decent one under a tenner
Failing that a Spanish Rioja.................from £ 5 onwards

Funny this i've heard loads of people say you'll not get a decent wine under a tenner and most of the stuff i've tried so far is good. Is it a case once you taste a really good wine (expensive) you'll know the difference?
:P Nederberg Cabernet Sauvignon
Full bodied South African red
yes supermarket a bottle tastes realy nice not like card board like some do
yuk yuk

I've tried quite a few red wines, and they never agree with me, but i do love my white wine, can drink glasses of it!.

That will be the one wink
Here's a tip....
If you buy a cheap bottle of plonk and you're not too sure of the taste, decante it from bottle to jug, air it. Then try it again
Is it also true that better wines have a bigger indent in the bottom of the bottle - or is that me just being guillable?

You being gullible. Have you seen the indent on a bottle of Blossom Hill plonk?

I'm not that cultured either. I enjoy a good wine when I can afford it. The rest of the time I drink plonk. Blossom Hill, just like you :P

Bleh! White?! No!!! However, Tesco's does a fairly impressive Claret at Lately, however, Vix & I have grown partial to Banrock Station, who does a similarly pleasant Shiraz in the same price range. If you haven't, give it a go.

Obviously i am just drinking this volume of wine in the interests of sceintific research, to see the effects (or should that be affects - never worked that one out) of wine upon a larger drinker. The results may well be posted here at varying degrees of sobriety.
Boy it's taking longer to make a post. rolleyes
yes agree with you reese

a little known very nice red wine is malbec, it's usually from north america or africa. i'm more of a champagne charlie myself but i did do a wine course last year ( thought i'd best find out about it seeing as i drink so much of the stuff ...hic) taste is all down to you like everything else wink and although some of the spendy wines are very nice you may think they're pants. i don't think you can go wrong with a shiraz (or called syrah if it's from france, they are both the same grape). a good book to buy is superplonk that rates all the wines that you can buy from most offies and supermarkets. hope this helps lol

Cheers -that sounds more like my price range!
Is it also true that the big wine makers produce "seconds" line that is basically just sub standard to their premier wines - but sold at a lot cheaper price. Considering i am no wine expert i doubt i'll notice!!
Is that me again being guilable?
Cheers so far - keep em coming!!

mmmmmmm christmas carols i would truley scare your turkey away including your guests hehehehe

Italian and Spanish Reds are my favourites. However you will get lots of fluctuation in Vintages with them and the better quality ones will be more expensive. Dambuster is really the expert on Italians but he drinks white FFS.
Australian reds while they may not stir the soul quite so much but their production methods mean they will be consistantly high quality. Especially in anything from 2000 onwards.
Brown Brothers Shiraz or Everton will be only about £6 or £7
And with Christmas Pudding you should try their Orange Blossom and Late Harvest Muscat mmmmmmmmm
Peper Lerhman's new stuff is all good too
If you like Shiraz my favourite is Mitchell's Pepper Tree which is about a tenner
All down to personal taste I guess. If you like one style or maker then go with that. I personally not keen on SA or CA reds.
Oh - edit to say our house wine is now Chillean and its great value. Conch y Toro - I think the Sunrise Label is the better stuff but its all good. I'd guess it would be about £3 or £4. I was in a v v v posh restuaruant where they had it on as their house wine for £25.

Andy~
Thanksgiving is sorta when the American pilgrims made peace with the natives there (which we mistakenly referred to as "Indians"). Said peace was subsequently broken countless times hence, and we now sequester them on embarrassingly-small tracts of land called "reservations", wherein they set up elaborate casinos and rightfully bilk us newcomers out of $millions$.
We eat turkey because Benjamin Franklin did not get his way in the selection of our national bird. If he had, turkeys would be a protected species over there and we'd be dining on delicious Bald Eagle on the last Thursday of every November.

not much of a wine connoisseur, but . . .
from 5 quid up . . .
any merlot . . . can't go far wrong. get good chilean / aussie / french ones fairly cheap.
any rioja. very quaffable!
any cabernet shiraz ((( a cheap bordeaux ))) = yummy! biggrin french is best i reckon.
some of the best wine i've had cost from the brittany area, using a cabernet. damn good it was! :D just watch the hangover! what a bitch! ;)
i'd go for something at least 2 or 3 years old. older if it's cheap enough. reds are always better after a bit of a lie down.
n x x x ;)
show me the way to go home i'm tired and i want to go to bed
i've been on this forum for an hour or so
and it's gone right to my head (oooerr misses wink )
p.s celticq never have i admired the scottish flag so much, i've just had to throw out a tin of shortbread.... will you lower your flag to half mast out of respect biggrin
