what - you mean to tell me people on here have actually had sex?? rolleyes redface lol

Cheers -that sounds more like my price range!
Is it also true that the big wine makers produce "seconds" line that is basically just sub standard to their premier wines - but sold at a lot cheaper price. Considering i am no wine expert i doubt i'll notice!!
Is that me again being guilable?
Cheers so far - keep em coming!!

Look for the aisles in the supermarket vino section called "Bin Ends" These are the 'seconds' for want of a better word, but not in the way that clothes are called seconds. Just what needs shot of, for whatever reason. But then you're prolly looking at £5 or £6.
Stick with things like £3-£4 for starters and decide what you like yourself. I personally don't like chianti, but that does not mean it's bad, does it?
Merlot, Chiraz, Cabernet... all just dandy and you can often find good mixes, like a cabernet/merlot for eg.
Enjoy dahlink.

Right then - thats me done for tonight - goodnight all
Thanks for the suggestions so far - will try a couple out and see what i like - cheers
Goodnight
My only other advise would be to try and buy your wine from a wine merchant or off sales.
This is because I have a pathalogical hatred of supermarkets and believe in my own way that by me not shopping in them I will be able to prevent them from destroying life as we know it.

Funny this i've heard loads of people say you'll not get a decent wine under a tenner and most of the stuff i've tried so far is good. Is it a case once you taste a really good wine (expensive) you'll know the difference?

There is plenty of good wine for around £5, & it would be very rare for me to pay a tenner for a bottle. The expensive way to get good quality wine is to buy a case from the likes of Laithwaites. However I've been told that the best way by far is to do a wine tasting course, so then you can pick out really excellent wines in supermarkets etc, & at low prices. So far I haven't found time to that though.
You could do worse than follow the recommendations of supermarket experts, as they know their stuff, & they buy in quantity so you get a good price. My advice would be to try different types of wines, & have them wifh food that compliments the wine. There are some good books about wine, & the right food to have them with. Enjoy.
Mmmmnn @ any shiraz. Fav white is reisling - Bend In the River yummm!
The Banrock/Paul Masson/Blossom Hill all drinkable and well priced but check out the south african reds - Shamwari spings to mind.
*Remembering drinking Bulgarian reds about 10 years ago - blimey that'd put hairs on yer chest!

Can anyone suggest some really good stuff? - i've been frightened to spend over £10 on a a bottle in case i hate it, so before i start spending over a tenner on a bottle i thought i'd ask for recommendations.

You really really cannot go wrong with a Wolf Blass.
I would recommend the Cab/Sauv - it has a Yellow Label and is about £9 a bottle.
If in doubt a Rioja is always a safe bet and you can usually get a decent one for about £5
We actually enjoy spending time finding the cheapest good wine that we can - we found a Rioja in a Supermarket for that knocked spots off many other dearer wines.
TBH half the fun is finding out what 'YOU' like.
Enjoy!! wink

Andy, put the glass down when you type wink

Glass what glass? - read the post a few above - just drinking from the bottle - who says us Northerners are not cultured and refined!! redface
Lol as a northerner and a red wine lover I find that funny, remember the time I ordered a bottle of wine in a restaurant on a night out with friends (was about 10 of us) and they all looked at me like I was mad - I clicked when they all ordered pints of lager n cider !
At least I didn't have to share my lovely bottle of red though - bloody plastered I was  when the waiter asked how many wine glasses to bring I asked for a straw!

I think were on the same wavelength!!
I get some really bad stick from the Lads if i drink anything other than Larger / Beer. Just find that stuff too bloating and anejoy a tipple of something differenent.
The North has got a bit better but still, not what you'd say as refined - but that how i like it!
lol I like the north too and can be as refined as the next person when I want to be
Maybe we could check out some different wines together some time? halfs the price biggrin

I'll hold you to that!! Oh yes you will be responsible for the hangover - i am a aman and nothing is ever ever our fault!!! lol
Anything from the Montana Winery in Malborough New Zealand, red or white, although i prefer whites.
Im a firm believer in drinking what YOU like not what you want to be seen drinking, if its a bottle of Libefraumilch (sp) or a £12 bottle of Chablis Premier Cru it doesnt matter so long as YOU like it.

Yeah i agree - i am nee poser who wants to be seen out with posh wines - just wanna few suggestions of stuff to try
Don't think i've had a New Zealand wine - didn't even think they produced the stuff!

OMG,
They have a fantastic range of wines made primarily on the northern shores of the south island, very drinkable, and suited tho those who dont really 'know' their wines, in other words its a 'safe bet' wine.
Try one you wont be dissapointed, another one to try is White Cloud, white NZ wine
Happy sampling lol
Cheers - i can feel a trip to the Supermarket coming on!!
my favourite red wine is KWV pinotage from south africa very strong at 14-1/2%
and under a fiver at threshers
Reds - juicy ones with bags of taste (not thin and watery) - Oz ones are good value and burst with fruit. I don't know the French ones too well but am looking forward to sharing a bottle or two of Bordeaux with Mark!
White - Pinot Grigio, Marsanne - something dry and fruity and not Chardonnay!!
I like both red and white wine, not at the same time you understand. My brother, who lives in Melbourne, has left me 7 bottles of 'good' Oz wine for me to collect from our mothers house at Christmas - hold on until then??
:P

lol   Luv luv luv NZ white wine. Was there this year and managed to spend quite a lot of time in the Vineyards there. Great Sauv Blanc they make the classic cats piss in a tin can style (which is my favourite) The reds are a bit weak though.
They also produced the biggest marketing hype in wine producing in the last 20 years. Cloudy Bay - must be one of the most sought after wines in the UK (NB do not seek it out)

There can always be more than one wine drinking night!!
I've got a thought brewing. Could be a burp like........
Bit late but I buy Jacob's Creek Grenache Shiraz by the case - less than a fiver a bottle in Tesco. It is superb. Wolf Blass as mentioned above Grenache Shiraz is good too.
In South Africa we really enjoyed Zevenwacht Shiraz which was spot on - not sure whether it is commonly available here yet.
Whites - any Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio is pretty good. Chablis gives me a headache!
Enjoy!
As there seems to be a laod of wine drinkers here - i was thinking would anybody interested ina a wine tasting night?
Basically we'd just hirea room somewhere and everyone bbring a bottle of thier favourite wines and we all have a taste. Everyone gets sloshed and have a good time? (obviosuly some would have to bring more than one bottle as there seems a high degree of hardened wine drinkers!)
If there is enough interest i'd be willing to do a lot of the leg work - it' would obviously be in the North East somewhere. After Christmas and the new year?
Like i say if there interest i'd be wiling to get the ball rolling.
Just post here for a indication of numbers / any ideas for the night.

Heres two of my fav's , im not much on French Red but the Mouton is nice , being a peasant I like lots of fruit in a red so its Spanish for me . The Rioja above is a bit sexy .
