OK So I have read the majority of the postings in this section and most appear to think of "today". Being a marrieed couple we started a family 20 years ago and kept it to 1 child, mainly because we felt that anymore would make life difficult and sustaining our standard of living even more difficult. We paid for child care from 3 months through to secondary school, very expensive as there were no benefits for child care. Were we before off? Financially we were much better off but my wife would have loved to stay at home but it just wasn't part of our upbring. Its time the government started to clamp down on benefits and they have to start some where. Where I live I see a lot of benefit manipulation. Young mothers who think its there right to have uncountable children because it increases the income. Couples who run 2 houses, on benefit, in case the benefit team catch them under the same roof. It all happens out there and it should be stopped. I strongly beleive it should be targetted at the worse long term offenders and I do not class a mother with an autistic child as a "worse offender" There are far
more out there and they know who they are.
Some have windged about the "fat cats" but at least they get up every day and work.
Good luck to the government I say, I hope they target it correctly and make a difference for the sake of all those who wouldnt dream of cheating.

Yes I suppose it does come across that way. We both have different views that are on the strong side, and yes sometimes we can clash.
Has to be said not for a while, as deep down from my point of view, I have a healthy respect for him. Appologise if I came across as agressive though.
What gets right on my titties are the families who keep having more and more children and seem to expect the council to dish out for them, hand benefits on a plate.
We don't have a family, but (in best case scenario - i'm not talking about exceptions to this here which of course there will be)we would plan a family around what we could afford.
If i lived in a one bedroomed house, i would never dream of having 8 kids. I couldn't afford it.
Yet people do, and it seems to be a given that they will be handed that nice 6 bedroomed council house on a plate, with extra benefits sprinkled on top.
Yes a sweeping generalisation, but at the momemt, because it can happen, it does happen.
I might love to have 8 kids running about, but i know that is something i could never afford, and i certainly wouldn't want all the other taxpayers funding my offspring, and it makes me so mad when you do see that happening.
I think it can only be a good thing, although i see it more hurting those who do actually need the money and for those who just can't work.

So why, over time, has something which all of us are entitled to should we meet the requirements become and excuse to be called a sponger or someone that is forced into a situation that probably isn't best for them?.

I think the main problem here is that a small minority of people who are sometimes referred to by the media as spongers, spoil it for the majority of genuine people who deserve the entitlements. The media is always keen to put up a story about the lone parent with 7 kids, all different fathers who claims an astronomical amount of money each week, lives in a really nice four bedroom home, all rent paid. However, how often do you hear about the single parent, who is doing their best to make a decent life for them and their kids, keeping a decent home and taking the role of both mother and father. No, we dont hear about these ones, there is no money in it for the papers, so why bother reporting about it. Much easier for the media to insinuate that everyone who claims benefits must automatically be a scrounger and therefore should be hounded off benefits.

People should always come first, something the Right always seem to forget.

The majority of the welfare policies in this country are taken from abroad and are often just tweaked to meet the UK requirements (not sure who's requirements though). Lone Parent polices are taken mainly from the USA and Switzerland who have very strict regimes in place to ensure that welfare support is only paid to those who 'earn' it rather than those who necessarily deserve it.
I am presently doing some work on the new welfare policies (for my University Course) and I have to say that the reports in the News of the World, the Mail and other papers are actually a very long way from what is intended to be implemented, with only certain aspects, being taken totally out of context, being reported against.
But that is the media for you confused
If anyone is actually interested in reading the full report, it is available here -

I wind some up on here at times, and I am aware all about the papers I read. Comics mrs777 says.
But it gives me a laugh, and with all the shit going on out there, if something gives me a laugh, then it has to be worth a read. Try it Dave, you may also find some things funny.
