Ill start the ball rolling
This is my story of my most memorable Christmas
The year was 1989 I was 24 and serving in Northern Ireland at a place called Bessbrook mill in South Armagh bandit country”
Why do I remember this one above all others ? well its not the obvious ! I lost my grandfather ( my hero) in the November and as I was on active service I couldn’t go to his funeral
I gave him my word I would be there ( I have never broken my word to anyone since )
As I write this I have a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye but ! the Christmas that year tort me a lot
Christmas eve we had pulled a p.v.c.p detail ( permanent vehicle check point) we patrolled out of BBK one of us had a small radio and on it was playing jona lewie “ stop the cavalry” ironic really as we where cav , we had a laugh about it as we went past the helipad and turned left into Bessbrook town
The v.c.p wasn’t far up the road as we got there it was about 8 or 9 o’clock .we settled in for a night of pissheads and envy , talking about what we would be doing if we where at home
We had decided before we went to N.I that we would all bye each other little pressies to open on Christmas day just so it felt like Christmas
As the night went on people came through the check point all in high spirits and having a great time .we had no real problems
There was a row of old houses about 10 meters across from the v.c.p . we could hear people having fun and all the Christmas music the 4 of us looked at each other in the cold dark sanger ,nothing was said , it wasn’t needed we where all thinking the same thing.
It got to about when one of the front doors opened and out came 4 or 5 people , drunk but happy , they shouted “ merry Christmas “ to us we did the same back then one of them went back in and brought out a massive tray of mince pies some butties and a bottle of “old bushmills” whisky they came over to us and ,even drunk and merry they said “thank you” we sat most of the night with those people talking and joking , it tart me a very valuable lesson there is good in everyone even your enemy, all you have to do is find it.
4 very merry squadies patrolled back to B.B.K the next morning a job well done
that was 17 years ago and I will remember it for the rest of my life
my best Christmas song ? “stop the cavalry” what else lol
this year my dog and I have decided to have a brill Christmas and make the most of every thing
hope you lot do to
yes we gave each other the pressies, after we sobered up wink

Hiding in a cupboard most of Christmas Eve, only to be dragged out, thrown against a wall and then taken away to spend Christmas day at someone else's house (I was about 12/13 at the time)

Yes my most memorable one was with my Mum and Dad alternating between rowing and barely speaking. It was horrendous
However I have had some lovely ones since.

Good story OM
my most memorable Christmas was the Christmas-eve my granddad took me out to find Santa and I really really believed i saw him.
the innocence of childhood, i wonder where it went dunno
Making love to my hubby to be in front of the fire just before midnight on Christmas Eve and the look of love from him will last for ever. After years of hurt and tears from a previous marriage I knew at that moment he was there to stay. smile

I had wonderful Christmasses as a child. My Dad loved it and made a huge fuss over us. Over the years as we all grew up, got married, had our own kids etc, it became a tradition that we all gather at my parent's house in the morning to open our pressies, then over to the RAFA club for a drink before dinner. The one that sticks in my mind now is the first one we had to endure without my Dad. He had died 2 months before but my Mum insisted we carried on as normal.
The trip to the club was marked with a toast to absent friends then back to the house for dinner, though without Dad to light the flaming pudding ( and almost set fire to the curtains rolleyes ) Before we sat down to eat, my Mum gave us all another present.
The label said, with Dad's love and mine was a last photo ever taken of my Dad in a beautiful glass frame. Needless to say, I cried like a baby and it's my most cherished possession. :inlove:
I've been through the rough Christmasses too, avoiding my family one year which upset my Dad but I couldn't show him the black eye my then husband had kindly given me the night before. Then last year, my 2nd hubby had left me, my eldest son had moved abroad and my youngest spent Xmas morning with his Dad and I was working that night so for the first time in my life I woke up on Christmas morning all alone.
I guess we all have good memories and bad memories of past Christmasses so let's hope that in years to come, we only remember the good ones.
Someone just sent me this on email. do you think they were looking at SH and realised who I was?
Made me laugh!!

Running out of the house at just gone midnight in my nightie and slippers, out to the main road and in front of a police car which I flagged down to tell them my parents were killing each other. Was driven back to the house, my parents were carted off to have various wounds stitched up, while I was left to deal with a terrified younger brother and sister and clean up all the blood.
I HATED sodding Christmas for years after that.
most memorable christmas... I'm going to put a happyish one...
We did the normal routine as every year with the addition of my nutty auntie and her family descending on my gran to 'make her christmas'.
What was supposed to be a fab christmas dinner turned out to be my auntie getting drunker and drunker in the kitchen when cooking, forgetting how long the stuff had been in the over, burning most of the food. She then nearly dropped the rest of it because she was too sozzled to carry stuff!
We moved the table to the livingroom in my gran's house and all sat around on these flimsy benches, deck chairs and any other seat we could get into the room without completely injurring someone! The food was served and my auntie went to sit down, missed the chair so went to sit on the bench, thudded herself down and tipped the other three cousins to the floor! Biggest shame of it was the table cloth wasn't caught and the dinner wasn't introduced to the carpet so we all had to gratefully gnaw on the carcoal laden christmas dinner presented to us.
Funnily enough when it came to pudding I think someone else oversaw it because most of the aunties in the room were quite drunk from having to wait so long for dinner! lol The rest of us were dressed up in old fancy dress costumes and told to pose for family photos! I ended up in the Penguin outfit, complete with big yellow felt feet and bowtie... hideous but funny.
We couldn't wait to get out of there to have access to the turkey and the fattest turkey butties I've ever seen so soon after 'eating' dinner!
my most memorable christmas was the first one that I spent without my son (he was at his dads')... and I decided to volunteer at the local sally army hostel.
serving dinner to almost 60 homeless- mainly- men I heard a voice that I recognised.
I looked closely and beneath all the facial hair I saw a man that I had served with in the Forces.
it brought home that my choices may have sometimes been less than great but I began to count my blessings again.
mine was my first xmas on my own after splitting with my husband, me and my 2 black labs spent xmas eve at my mams, the boys (dogs) wouldnt settle, got hardly any sleep all night, ended up taking them home the next day cos as family arrived the just go more hyper and they were big dogs
came back round for dinner, spent hours with the family playing a stupid game we got in a cracker, drinking and eating the most gorgeous cherry cup choccies from m&s, went home, fell asleep.
went to mates for boxing day, her mam made home made steak pie, and we got drunk and played monopoly lol
i did what i wanted to do for achange rather than being dragged off to the inlaws etc and i loved it, had its difficult moments being the first xmas apart, but i have never looked back since.
new year was shit btw, but bloody wont be this year
Earthy xx
My childhood christmasses were always special. Last couple of years have been absolute hell with the dealths of my grandparents dominating them sad We don't "do" christmas in this house as such, but we appreciate spending time with the family, relaxing and enjoying ourselves.

the one i try to forget is my dads 60th birthay 2 yrs ago, 29th december
arranged a surprise party for him, everyone was full of flu, my sis had twin girls 3 weeks old and she took one to the doctors on the morning, within 4 hrs they were both in hospital out of town, one on life support other in oxygen tent with bronchilitis, i spent the week at my mams helping her look after my sis's 2 yr old as her and her husband had to both stay at the hospital as the girs were on separate wards and had only been given a 3% chance of survival.
to top it off i lost one of my black labs on 27th
that was a shit xmas
pleased to say though the girls are fit and healthy
Earthy xx
My most memrable xmas was the one i had while living with my gran, being with her was the only time i ever truely felt loved as a child and it was the only xmas i had that didn't involve fighting and falling out, my dad being to pissed to know what was going on and my mother taking her un happiness out on us
Funny how most who have replyed have bad momories confused
Humph... I remember being 17.. my 10 year old sister got a new bike so I decided on Xmas morning to be a clown and go and ride it down the street --- little girls pink bike -- you're getting the picture... yes? Well, no sooner had I started riding.. I fell off the bloody thing, giving myself a HUGE black eye for the whoe of the Xmas period evil ... bear in mind I am 17, trying to impress by 21 year old boyfriend (who was a wanker btw and his brother was a better shag :P ) with how mature I am, and I have to go for new year at his parents house... with a bloody black eye I got from a kids bike
Not good
Bah bloody Humbug!

the thing i rermember most about christmas in my teens, was getting hammered on christmas eve and having chicken soup for xmas dinner smile (couldnt face owt else and happened every year for about five years).
This after takin bloody hours to open prezzies that i couldnt focus on and my youngest brother giving me a pack of two mars bars with one missing.(the git got hungry while wrapping but left the outer wrapper on) and to top it all it turned out my mum had givin them to him to put in cos he only bought me a book.

What an insightful thread which brings back good and not so great memories...
One christmas about 11 years ago we ended up at hospital with my daughter who had been rushed in for the removal of her brain tumour. It was removed successfully two days before xmas with no side effects (someone was looking down on me and my family that day). We had lived with this knowedge she had a brain tumour for 4 years so this was wonderful news. I thought the consultant was an absolutely amazing man. So wonderful, that on christmas day, he came to the ward and carved the turkey and served all of the patients before going home to his family. It was very surreal. All my family came around to the hospital in the afternoon and we had a brilliant christmas day.
One to remember
