We hold parties quite often and work on inviting 15 + couples and hope 5 turn up. If you get more that is a bonus. That is despite checking several times that everybody wants to come, giving out our private details such as addresses and phone numbers. And.. We provide food and some drink too. Which then gets wasted. Well the food does lol.
Mind you, we seem to be a dangerous couple to get a party invite from. At the last five parties, 4 relatives of invitees died just prior to the party starting. 6 couples couldn't come as either they or their close relatives had just been rushed to hospital. Entire families were struck down by the flu... including one person with suspected swine flu. Some people lost their memory as they thought it was taking place on another weekend and numerous others just seemed to disappear off the face of the planet.
People do have legitimate reasons for not being able to come. We understand that. We had to pull of a party once when b did her back in. We warned the party hosts a couple of days in advance that we were struggling and finally pulled out on the morning of the event. They were none too pleased but we did try to give them as much notice as possible. Most people just don't bother.
Mind you those that do turn up have a fantastic time.. As do we. So it is still worth doing. Just a shame as you say, so many people spoil it with no shows.

The last time I did (1995) his present to me was a plastic box containing all you could wish for to change a tyre at midnight, in the rain and on a badly lit road, not to mention the fact that he presented this box to me in what he thought was the most romantic of places (car park) and then proceeded to make sure I could change tyres without assistance, so stood there watching and instructing the correct use of tyre lever thingy.
Got to say, it was useful, if not romantic and the wet wipes and square of carpet he thoughtfully included have come in handy on other more momentous occasions when the need has arisen when out in the car.
But I won’t be prodding him for a romantic thought or even sending them his way, it could just prove too much for his poor sensitivity
