Star, I am happy that the public transport in your area works for you, it just doesn`t work in my area. I drive to work and there have only ever been one maybe two occasions in my working life that the snow has kept me at home.
What`s wrong with being out in the all weathers, I am outside at work so it doesn`t really bother me, stick on some warm clothes and water proofs and away you go. If I can`t get out to ride I go for a brisk walk.
Star interestingly enough I am looking for a new cycle as this weekend my old one that I have had for around 15 years has finally bit the dust. I am looking in the region of around £400 for a new one, how many months is that in gym fees? If it lasts for another 15 years I will be very happy.
GnV finally yes I do warm up to exercise, I also cool down and stretch after a ride or walk.
And so I will leave the thread there, we don`t seem to be getting anywhere as I like to be outside riding my bike and looking at the fields, and everyone else seems to enjoy looking at girls bending over :grin:

Star when was the last time you used public transport to get to work and back?
I start at 6am and leave the house at a rather unsocial time, there are no buses then, and even when they are running I would have to get one into the middle of town then get onto a connecting one and even then they do not come onto the business estate I work on.
Also it would cost me nearly £8 a day, so no thank you.
Star I dont want to be in a gym watching a tv or a girl bend over and paying stupidly over priced fees for something I can do for free, I want to be in the fresh air looking and listening to the wild life, looking across the fields, saying hello to the ladies on horseback, walkers and other cyclists.

Fortunately, society has moved on since the Middle Ages.
Firstly I have not been here as long as that. Secondly I am the kind of person that only wants to ban things that either serve very little purpose, or inflict injury. Whilst a car can of course inflict injury it does serve a very good purpose. The cycle serves very little purpose. If you want to cycle in safety there is a gym near you. wink
Star how can you say cycles serve little purpose?
There are 2 bike sheds where I work and evey day they are full to over flowing, the people who ride to work can cetainly find a use for a bike.
Plus why would anyone want to be in a gym when there are miles of lovely country side to ride through?

You really need to think outside the box Star and apply a bit of logic to your thinking. If you are on a bike (or motorcycle) you are vulnerable and so ride defensively in the absolute knowledge that in a collision with any other vehicle - you are going to come off worse.

The vast majority of motorbikes I see are being ridden like they are stolen....
And to answer mrs-bmw's claim that it is the motorist that lacks a little patience it's not the motorist who can be seen ducking and diving in and out of stationary or slow moving traffic in an effort to get where they are going as fast as possible...

Well Steve, I too have seen kids riding like this, dodging in and out of traffic, however I don`t ride like that, my son doesn`t ride like that and neither do any other members of my family.
I am a 46 year old woman who likes to ride for exercise and pleasure and let me tell you sometimes it feels like I am taking part in a dangerous sport the way some of the other road users harrass you for no reason when you are riding down a country lane.
Personally I don`t drive like that either, and there aren`t many drivers out there that can make the same statement.
There are thousands of people who cannot drive, or even afford to use a car with the cost of insurance, road tax, petrol etc, people still have to get to work, kids still have to get to school and people like me still want to ride for the hell of it.

I have just read that and it only states how the accidents occur and the most common, there is nothing in there to state that cycling is the main cause for cyclists being hurt on the road, in fact some of the stats point to the fact that drivers are far more likely to cause the accident by driving to close or running into cyclists at junctions.

Easy to say mrs-bmw but could not the real facts be that the unpredictability of the cyclist is a significant factor here?
Try as one might, a cyclist - by definition, is going to be the one coming up smelling of roses (no pun intended, I'm sure they also run into pig slurries from time to time as well) and the poor old long suffering motorist is going to get the blame. It's the same with the emergency treatment costs; the motorist gets hit with these against his policy under the Road Traffic Acts which, although not indicative of blame, still leaves motorists in general bearing the costs when cyclists, if they were required to hold public liability insurance, would pay their share or bear some of the costs at least in their premiums. The same argument would apply to pedestrians too, of course.

How did people who ride bikes become the wrong doers in a thread about 2 top cyclists being knocked off their bikes, one by a lady who admits she didn`t see him?
I would imagine that if an automobile and a cyclist collide the motorist might have a scratch on his paint work etc, where as the cyclist might be seriously injured or killed, and if you knock over a pedestrian are you telling me the first thing you would do is ask if they have public liability.

With reference to the lady who knocked down Bradley Wiggins, she admits she did not see him, so who is to blame there?
I myself am a keen cyclist and I try to ride most evenings through the summer and whenever the weather allows through the winter.
I stay mainly to country lanes and quieter roads and wear all the apropriate gear, however even on the quietest of roads cars speed past you at break neck speed, lorries ride so close you can practically touch them and quite often I have been forced to ride onto the verge as cars have still driven towards me even when it was my right of way.
I also drive every day to and from work as I can afford to run a car, some people do not have a driving license or are able to afford to drive and therefore ride to work, so are you suggesting that cyclists stop work so as not to inconvenience all of you that may lack a little patience and consideration for other road users?
We are constantly being told to get fit, leave the car at home, save the planet etc, so why should I give up my simple pleasure just because some of you cannot look left or right in your mirrors and take note of who might be next to you.

I used to be able to accom but then my circumstances changed a great deal and if I was still meeting there is no way I would be able to have anyone back where I live now but belive me that does not make me secretly married/engaged/attached- delete as appropriate.

I am really squeemish about eggs after my friend cracked one for an omlette years ago and not only legs but feathers and most of a beak came out to :eeek:
I now have to crack every egg I use into a dish so I can see whats going on in there before I use them and boiled eggs for me are a thing of the past.
As for being squeemish in general I think being a mum stops you turning green at most things that come out of a human body although I heave when I see a man spit, it is just so disgusting. smackbottom

I had 2 months off with stress a few years ago and I really was going through an horrendously stressful time, it really is no walk in the park when you have it for real and I rarely have time off work, unfortunaltey its a term that is used all to easily and allows people to gain time off work when really they just want to swing the lead.

I had to look at your profile to see how old you were, I thought either very young and naive about marriage, or stuck somewhere in the dark ages when only men worked and women stayed home and did "the little women" thing of having missionary sex on a Friday night with the light off.
I think you will find in most households these days the woman works too, I cetainly did while my ex spent all of his money on himself and acted like a complete twat while I worked to keep the children fed and clothed.
Its all about compatability and harmony, you let one of those things go and the partnership goes along with it and so does the need to feel close to that person and I can vouch for that because I didnt have sex with my ex for many years before I showed him the door.

The fact is the Forum is there as part of the site, but it has lots of sub-sections which do get used on a regular daily basis, don`t forget The Cafe is only one section and you really can`t make people post in it if they don`t want to dunno

We run a system called "Bradford Score", occasion x occasion x days off = your score, and 3 occasions or 125 points gets you a "counselling" session plus a level one on your record for 6 months, if you have time off in said 6 months you get a level 2 for 12 months, if you have time off in said 12 months you get a level 3, any more time off then its bye-bye you.
Harsh I know but the view is you have to tar everyone with the same brush, its stops most of the lead-swinging but also impacts people like yourself and me who don`t have time off unless its absolutely necessary.
