Discretion????? What do you use that program for????......Any good for editing vids??
Having recently worked in a 4star hotel in a security capacity I can tell you that, to a large extent, it depends on the outlook of the individual shift manager. This assumes, of course, that you aren't making too much noise or offending the modesty of other guests! ( Spoilsports!! )
Where I worked there was one night manager who seemed to think it was his mission in life to limit the socialisation of guests.....particularly after 11pm......the others usually had a knowing smile and let things continue until noise was too great or there were complaints from other guests.
Since I'm no longer working there.......I can't tell you what shifts I'm on......otherwise you could play to your hearts content......assuming I got 'observer' status of course!!
Whilst I can see why some people might be persuaded that unions are the cause of unemployment within this country.......can any of those same people explain to me the rationale of large companies making huge profits who close UK plants, offices, etc and move the SAME work to countries which are still developing and, therefore, sources ( probably temporarily) of cheap labour????
This has happened so many times over the past two decades that it appears to be 'accepted' by many - presumably accepting that those companies who have made those huge profits owe NO obligation to their workforces at all.......OR to the UK ......except as a market.
I'm sure there are arguments against.......but given the option.....I'd ban ANY company taking such decisions from the UK markets altogether!!!.......If nothing else I'm sure it would make them hesitate before taking such decisions!!

Yes!!!.......but how long did it take 'em to clean all the pigeon shit off the card??
Can't comment on the figure of 500,000 but my experience with my youngest when at primary school makes me think the figure is credible.
After being increasingly concerned about his failure to pick up the basics in his fist 3 years I approached his form tutor, the school assessment teacher and, eventually the headmistress.....on each occasion receiving the same message that he was 'slow' but nothing exceptional.
After a further two and a half years of continuous pressure and to-ing and fro-ing to the various educational departments he was finally assessed as both dyslexic and dispraxic and offered a place at a local special needs school or the option to receive tutoring from an outreach teacher for half a day a week. He chose the later as he wanted to keep contact with his school friends.
A very pleasant and able woman.......within 6 weeks she told us that .....although slightly affected by both conditions.....his real problem was that the standard of teaching he'd received was so poor. Within a further six months with her help and help from ourselves of course....he'd caught up with his peers.
I'm no expert on those conditions.......but find it unbelievable that a child could have been over 2 years behind his peers and have caught up with them within a further 6 months if he'd been correctly taught in the first place .....especially considering he did have some impediment , albeit not particularly severe!!
After going to secondary school he kept pace with his peers and gained a reasonable number of GCSE's.....including 2 in english......further reinforcing my belief that he'd received piss poor tutoring from his primary school.
I'd like to say he was the only child at that primary school that was so far behind.......but discovered that there were an additional 10 kids in his class alone. If you extrapolate those figures the figure of 500,000 may even be low!!!
I'm unable to speak about other schools from personal experience ......but remain convinced that that particular school should have been closed.....or at the very least...the staff re-assessed or retrained.
It's truly frightening that children are at the mercy of untalented or disinterested teachers with little or no means to have things rectified before their futures are destroyed!!
In answer to the original post
As a lifelong pacifist I find myself in a dilemma in that it's against my beliefs to prepare for agression BUT......the economic shambles that exists makes the subsequent boost to the economy pretty important.
Thinking longer term.....without this investment.....and assuming some of the dire forecasts for the economy could prove accurate....I'm also fearful that riots ....or worse.....could be the end result if such investments are NOT made.
As it seems unlikely that this present government are likely to invest in such projects to the scale where it would have a significant impact on any strife.......Where do I go to follow my principles???

Ah right...so that is the reason for the conspiracy theories then?
You obviously have a lot more to learn.
Like the way you infer knowledge of myself without ever meeting or engaging in debate...(ish)!!
If you look at the message I FREELY admitted I have a lot to learn on the subject.....but note....INTEREST does not equate to BELIEF!!!......My own personality is such that I need to be interested in a subject in the first place to put in the effort to do the research......didn't help at school or uni......but it's how I am.
Quite how you make the jump from such an interest to the 'theory' is beyond me......though it says a great deal TO me!!
The 'theory' is clearly labelled 'willing to consider'......in my experience it takes rather more than that to postulate a theory......I was merely playing devil's advocate in that.....to my mind...far too many posters were accepting the line that the TUC is led by self serving dinosaurs.......and I consider it no more laughable to consider equal self interestin the corporate/political spheres to be behind the financial crisis.
I'm under NO illusions as to how complicated it would be to organise such events......but I have personal knowledge of some of the extent that far right influence travels, which....for my own protection, I can't expand upon ( A perfect opening to a charge of 'paranoia', I'm sure!! )......my 'theory' merely taking it to the same, absurd, level as the 'theories' re:the far left influence on the union movement......which I find objectionable in that it neatly bypasses the fact that there are many intelligent, reasoning individuals within the movements.....to say nothing of the abilities of the membership to think for themselves.
Abuses DO exist within the union structures.......most blown out of all proportion by the media ( Whose interests do they serve?).......It's also true to say that abuses also exist within the corporate and political spheres......I don't believe that any fair minded poster would disagree.
Helped a young lady who'd lost all her keys and important documents and money to gain access into her house..........Wasn't even sure I'd be able to fit though such a small window.......But the lube helped!!

Oh Hell!!!.....that's gonna disappoint one woman I know!!.......She's been 'practicing for years.......and could still fit a whole bunch of pencils in......and the geometry set to go with it!!
Am I the only one who's willing to consider that this global financial fiasco has been deliberately engineered??
Following the logic that Trades Union leaders are hell bent on promoting their own hidden agendas at the expense of their memberships and the more general community.......is it TOO big a leap to believe that such economic chaos can be engineered by the global powers......very few of whom are identifiable as individuals??
It's only relatively recently I've become interested in anti-capitalism........so I have a lot to learn yet on the subject but my experience of 'government interest' and 'national interest' leads me to be extremely sceptical that the crisis could have reached the point it did without major warnings being heard for many years beforehand.
When you take the international scale of things into account.......it makes for sobering thoughts.......just WHO could plot such a disaster.......and to what ends???......economic or political??
Before you dismiss the thought......consider how governments throughout the world routinely misdirect and misinform their populaces, often for their own agendas.......more often because THEIR strings are being pulled by economic powerhouses within the financial and business sectors.
Sobered ME up anyway!!!!.........and I was getty nicely pissed!!

Boy!!!......What short memories!!!.......Don't you remember some of the antics from the 'authorities' during the national miners strike????.......Regardless of your politics that should have made people aware of the true nature of our 'security forces'!!!
I got quite a few bruises for simply standing in the wrong place.........and was stopped altogether from travelling to Yorkshire and the Midlands.......All within a 'free' state!!
And the 'antics' of some of the flying pickets. Well, some of them were simply travelling thugs looking for a fight and nothing to do with the miner's fight for jobs.
Foxy.........you don't know me......and I admit to some left wing tendencies.....but PLEASE don't label ALL protestors as the media would have you believe!!....YES...there were thugs.....but a small minority!!....MOST of the violence was perpetrated BY the 'security foeces'........and, since I was actually there to witness it......I think I'm in a better position to judge!
I'll leave it at that as I have NO intention of diverting the original thread
Not even room for a quip!

Chris
We seem to have 3 separate threads going on here!!!
I'm off in my dinghy to join the Sark Freedom Force.......Always up for defending the little buggers!!
Re the welfare bill
We're the victims of constant 'patching' of the system......sometimes for idealogical reasons......most of which 'fix' one problem and create a dozen more which has created a behemoth that no-one understands properly......including the 'experts' employed to administer the system.
Having, quite recently, suffered ill heath which prevented me continuing with my, small, self employed business I've had personal experience of some of the chaos within the system. I've witnessed sums in excess of £32,000 being wasted on 'training' for positions that simply didn't exist.......and, when the authorities were made aware of it, simply 'buried it!!
On top of that.......there are strange situations where......to qualify for certain help with obtaining work.....you can, effectively, disqualify yourself from considerable ammounts in financial help when you DO obtain work......because of conflicts in the rules.........Hardly surprising that people who discover these things opt to stay on benefits .....is it??
What is REALLY needed is a cross party agreement that the whole system needs to be ripped up and started afresh......which would deal with all the existing 'problems'.......Though I'm far from certain in the present economic climate that adequate safeguards would be built in to the new system.
YES!!!.....we all know SOME people abuse the system........but how often are we made aware of people who the system lets down on a regular basis???
The third thread
I couldn't agree more with kentswingers and Ned........It's LONG overdue that the politicos showed the balls to deal with the HUGE abuses carried out by business.......unfortunately with the demise of a real Labour party there doesn't seem to be the will to deal with these abuses. Morally there is NO defence......but whoever claimed that busnesses or political parties are governed by morals?????.......POWER makes much more sense from their perspective!!!
I admit to being left wing in my views......but don't take that to mean that I'm blind to abuses on either side!!!.....Some of the comments here have me seriously worried about the society we've been left with!!......Blame whichever party you like!!
Chris
Hi,
The original question is a subject close to my heart .....though I accept that views on ths subject tend to be very polarised.
Regarding the man concerned......you knew him...unlike myself......but my initial reaction is that......to make such a dramatic change in his personality......it's UNlikely that it's simply the use of weed that's been the cause.....though it may have contributed. MANY things can occur in someone's life over a long period.....possibly causing mental problems, usually causing changes in our views in many areas....to say nothing of possible emotional problems which may have contributed to his present condition,......Can you be CERTAIN that his current condition can be SOLELY attributed to his use of cannabis??
Regarding the question re:Should all drugs be classified as A
My own views.......after many years of contact with users of many different drugs.....both legal and illegal is that.....eventually....ALL governments will be forced to accept decriminilisation at least.
It's one thing to fight a 'war' against drugs when they can be easily identified.....quite another when it's becoming easier each day to chemically modify ILLEGAL drugs so they become legal!!.....but...in essence...produce the same effect for the user.
My, admittedly, left wing views ( matched, incidentally, by the private opinions of some influential MPs .......Do your own research re: your own MP ), are that HUGE resources are wasted in this failing 'war' on drugs which.....given the political will......could be re-allocated to the education.....particularly of the young....so that they were aware of the FULL implications of using ANY drug.
On top of that.......If the state were to accept that supply of pure drugs was legal they could eliminate most of the social ill effects of drug use.....criminal behaviour, costs to NHS of impure supplies and violence associated with criminal behaviour to get the drugs, costs of subsidising addicts via the benefits system when supplied with regular supply many are capable of holding down jobs, etc.
On top of all that....as is the case with tobacco nand alcohol......duties would be raised via the legal supply of such supplies together with legal employment within the supply sector....all contributing to the exchequer's coffers
In MY view......the main consideration should ALWAYS have been education!!....Since the 60's and before we have been 'educated' to believe that most drugs have enormous adverse effects......hardly surprising that generations have ignored the official line!!
Finally......consider the hitorical records of governments both here and abroad.....in caving in to pressures from established big businesses at the times to outlaw what was previously legally acceptable.
I don't suggest that such political decisions will come easy to ANY government who are, after all, maily concerned with obtaining power, but remain convinced that legalising drug use and supply is the only, long term answer
UNLESS.......through our own fear we continue to be manipulated into welcoming 'Big Brother' into his omnipotent position covering EVERY aspect of our lives!!.....THEN....I think ......we'll have rather more to be concerned about that drug use!!
Appologies for going on.......If not for the AUP......I'd have had rather more to say!!

But my eyesight's not too good........any chance of braille?????

1. KaznKev and LaffnChilli
Phew!!!...Thanks!.....Was beginning to wonder if I WAS the only one remebering things in that light!!!
Laffs comments in particular seem remarkably similar to my own introduction .........You didn't frequent the Warrington area in those days did you????.....I'm seriously wondering if MY couple were serial seducers of young innocents like myself!! ( Dont laff!!!!....I WAS!!!.....That's the wrong fantasy to stick in MY brain!!lol )

My appologies!!.....My sense of humour leaves a little to be desired sometimes.......and can be a little confusing 'til you know me.
Don't take the age thing TOO seriously......It's only when I'm forced to see it that my age even crosses my mind!1......Usually - in there - I'm an eternal 20 something!!......then some shit cries out 'Oi!! Slaphead!!' and destroys it for 5 minutes lol.
Honestly......If I stick around long enough .......you'll see how self depricating my humour can be.......But I'm not here on some bizarre mission to influence other peoples views on ageism......or anything else for that matter!!!.Not, yet, sure I will stay......but .....if my choice of username seems unflattering - or puts people off.....What the hell!!!.....It'll say more about the views of the people avoiding me than anything........Not something I'm likely to see as a great loss!!!.....But thanks for the thought!!
Much as I wish I DID have the disposable income you suggest.......I still can't see me at Hedonism somehow.....2 reasons.....YANKS!!!( appologies to anyone who is......just never met one I've liked! )....and sunburn!!!!!......Ooops!!.....Who's prejudices are showing!!
Once again.....Thanks for the comments!!!.....All helping to build a picture!!

Hi All,
Ageing old perv who's been off the scene for more than a few years ( O.K. DECADES!!)....recently joined the site after discussions with someone from here. Although I've got some brilliant memories from my old escapades I'm here mostly to see IF....and HOW....things have changed.
Of course there are the obvious differences......snail mail and phone contacts in them days.......everything much more immediate today 'cos of technology........but also curious to know if there's the same tolerance and friendliness ......or whether some of the social graces have given way to impatience and bigotry.
Don't want to sound like an old fart TOO much.......'cos I DO have a sense of humour......somewhere.....'ang on......it's 'ere somewhere. lol ........But those conversations I've had have REALLY puzzled me in some respects.......and I'd LOVE to find that there really are all those fondly remembered activities still happening.......with people who aren't TOTALLY convinced they're the only ones capable....maybe even find a face or two that I can remember!! ( IF I've got me glasses on.........AND me memory hasn't failed that day*smile*!!)
SO!!.......From one old_arse to any others out there..........and all those delectable youngsters too, of course ( told you I was a perve lol )........ENJOY!!
Anyone desperate enough.........Doesn't SAY you've got to be sane to join!!.....or just plain willing(?) to help (re)educate me......feel free to message. ( Not EASILY shocked!!.......Anyone like a challenge?? *smile*)
Thanks
Chris
