The "Investigatory Powers Bill" is just about to get Royal Assent - if you're not familiar with the Bill, it will require that communication providers keep a log of their customers net browsing behaviour for a year.

This will involve ISP's keeping a record of what websites and chat apps their customers make use of and when. And via whatever device you use to connect to the web - desktop, laptop, tablet, smartphone: home, work or public connection.

Dozens of different bodies, ranging from the police to the Food Standards Agency, will be able to request access to this information without requiring a warrant.

There has been concern that the system is open to abuse, as the requests will not be vetted by an independent body. Moreover, the database presents a tempting target for hackers (and seeing how well - not! - companies like TalkTalk already manage sensitive customer information, I'd say that's a fairly inevitable outcome).

It may also increase our web access costs as the ISP's are going to have to find the money for recording, storing and securing all this massive volume of data from somewhere.

Think politics is nothing to do with you? Think again!
