Interesting question. I once attended an interview for a managerial position in a transport company. I had already decided they were a bunch of pratts and not worth working for. They asked me a question. "Mr So-and-So, we see you are not married. It is usual for wives to accompany husbands on certain company functions which other companies and organisations may attend. As you do not have a wife..." (The implication being that at these functions everybody was paired off equally male/female). I replied "If that was the case I would take a female friend who would pretend to be my wife or failing that a female friend of a friend or failing that a female friend of a friend of a friend. Failing that I would simply employ a woman to accompany me and pretend to be my wife".
After I said this there was an audible shocked silence and we move on to the next question.

This is the problem with MI6, they have these silly quizzes and 'situations'. The good people usually can't get past this entry scenario and thus are not recruited. The people who do get past it...well not all are poor quality...of course, must not forget that while getting bogged down in Ruritania...you are online...
There were quite a few inexperienced MPs voted into office in 1997. School teachers, social workers, et al. They had to learn in the job. This may partly explain the situation we are in now. Have a look at the photos of the newly elected Labour members of parliament then take a look at them a year later. Interesting how the style gurus and the public relations image experts changed their appearance, hairstyles, clothing...a lot of the women looked like a typical bunch of female social workers...
