the company that bought SH are going to want to make money to at least cover the cost of running it, charging for membership is probably the easiest way for them to do that, especially as there are already the old members who, for the time being at least, have premium access to the site.
Maybe this should all be clarified on the "Is this a free site?" link (top left on home page.
I hadn't realised this was going on as I must (just) have got in before the changes.
