I dont know if I'm not coming across as I mean to or not but I'm not getting @ Ops at all.....
I know exactly what the job entails and everything else that goes with it...
All the Ops do a fine job :-)

In my experience, those who don't want to be ops, mods or whatever you call them, generally make the best ones.

   dunno
Or to put it another way:
"I wanna be an op, I wanna be an op, I wanna be an op, I wanna be an op" don't make good ops. Surely the best way to see who would make good room ops would be to see who regularly opens rooms and which of those have the least problems/complaints and approach them to see if they would like the job.

That also happens (or at least it used to) ...
A good question or a thankless task!
Well someone has to do it or anarchy would reign in the Chatrooms!
Nobody gets it right every-time including Chatroom Ops! We all make mistakes (well Mrs Gu Mk1 & II were). We all learn from these mistakes to make us better in the future.
They are all (unpaid) volunteers - so those that are must be committed to doing it (I hope!).
There are never enough, but you can have too many....
You don't need to be an Op to help others - imparting knowledge is a gift to everyone..
A complaint from one is only half the story..
Would I do it - Yes, if I felt happy that I was doing it for the right reasons and could provide the commitment. No, if it's really a burden that would get in the way of why I'm here.
So, it's all down to a personal choice to be or not to be an Op...

Tbh, i dont know how u come 2 that conclusion, most of the op's on here have shown an interest in becoming one,....so does that mean u think we are no good?
We do go and watch ppl, and we have approached some, if we think they may be the right person for the position. Most have said "No thanks". But now u have the opportunity to put yourself forward.

Thanks for your kind words (they are appreciated) and a good point you make about the fact that you don't need to be an Op to help someone. I know members don't have the buttons that Ops have, but when someone takes the time to help another member out it really shows how much this is a community rather than just another website.

I personally think that if mods or ops are online and "working" they should show as online...

I know what you are saying Steve and I am the worlds worst at not showing online confused
One of my reasons is that the server is a little slow. Someone might see I am online and ask for help when I left a few minutes ago.
Apart from that, I am in and out like a yo-yo sometimes and it is nice to to the odd PM without being noticed innocent
I do also get the notification of PMs emailed to me and will log in to see if I can help.
However, I will make more of an effort to show myself online in the future. (You know what I mean :lol2smile

Thats not as far out as some might think. We have approached people to ask them if they want to be an OP in the past. Its a tough call for OPs because some would say we are getting in 'mates' or recomendations will come from friends of friends.
We would always be willing to discuss suggestions from others though dunno

Some do show as online but as DG says above some dont..
Its probably OK for the likes of me that knows the score on getting in touch with someone but for those a little less savvy its not so easy if you get my drift :-)

Sorry... by not showing as online... I meant not actually logged into SH. I'm generally online all day at work but it may be that I'm just not on site. I think I'm showing up as online when I'm here. biggrin

Totally agree

Not so sure about this part...
There are some regular room hosts who only ever use "their room" as they don't much care for a room where they don't have control. Some of these same people also (and I've seen it with my own eyes) operate two sets of rules. One for the regulars, and one for the new visitors.
Looking at a potential chatroom op from that direction regrettably doesn't put them in the same light as your description.

Seems like I'm one of these then.
In my case though, my desire to be an OP again is mainly due to the fact that I have seen with my own eyes the havok that some people cause at stupid o'clock in the morning. As I tend to do a fair bit of my chatting between 10pm and 3-4 am (if I have been on a late shift and have a day off after or am on another late) I thought I might be able to help put a stop to it.
The reason I had to stop before was due to personal circumstances which has been explained to an OP in my PM to them asking to be put on the list of those considered. My record as an OP in the past is known to the powers that be, and whilst some may feel that I wasn't the best OP of the time, I stick by my record and if turned down this time will accept the decision made with good grace.
