I'm utterly appalled by this story. I just don't understand how someone could be so cruel and behave in such a mindless way. He has no excuse and indeed can't give one. :undecided:

I'm really not sure what to suggest the discussion be about to be honest, I just cannot believe someone would do that.
I'd happily throw away the key. evil
I hate any kind of cruelty to animals, I mean any kind.
I have refrained from looking at the clip, as it would make my blood boil.
I didn't put the clip in Kenty... it's too disturbing, that's just the article. Makes me sad.
Fishermen often blame seals for taking 'their' catch and try to wipe them out. I'd reckon that's his 'justification'. They are wrong on both counts - the fish don't belong to humans and it's us that are depleting fish-stocks to the point of no return.
As to the story - yes it's disgusting what he did. He should have the book thrown at him. Or have a hulking great wrestler go for him with a fence post - see how he likes it.
It must be damn-near impossible to monitor this sort of thing - I understand it was only found so fresh because there was a survey going on in the area. Scotland has an enormous coastline.
I have always said and stand by my opinion.....Humans are the worst kind of animal on the planet. Not all but a most.
A lot of humans are nothing more than pond life. Still do not even want to read the artical.
bizarre how he offers no reason or explanation.....just nasty evil
I've always found seal culling with clubs distasteful although it was a surprise that it is now illegal in the UK.
Here's a piece about countries that do do it still and the progress made by the EU in putting its foot down.

Its not particularly graphic.
vile !
Awwww them poor lil seals, that is just horrendous. They are so defenseless! What on earth was going throguh his mind? mad

Sheriff Graeme Napier warned Stewart that a custodial sentence was a possibility.

But he'll probably escape with a fine and a bit of a telling off, even though Grey Seals are protected by law during the breeding season, although it's apparently perfectly ok to kill them if they damage fishing nets? confused So, a big bloody bag made of string to catch fish in is considered more valuable than the third rarest seal on the planet. rolleyes What an absolute c*nt! sad

Yep.
He's obviously of the same ilk of those Aussie nutters who slaughtered Sting Ray after Steve Irwin died... I am sure he thought the seals were decimating fish stocks...
I love the thinking... Huge trawler with large nets taking thousands of fish... Seal who has a few a day to live... And the seal is at fault...
Cruel eejit.

What they said
I personally find this quite distasteful but it isn't quite as romantic to think of the man attempting to make a living in an incredibly hostile environment. (I lived in Shetland for a number of years and the seals were viewed by islanders as pests precisely because they literally took food out of the mouths of the islanders) I have no pity for what he did as I personally think the slaughter of anything is unjust. I have been a vegetarian for most of my life because of this.
I can empathise with his fury if the environment in Shetland is currently as affected as I think it will be. The hand to mouth existence up there is much more literal than it is on the mainland.
He will be more penalised for shedding a negative light on Shetland as his punishment, if not exemplified, will need to serve as an encouragement to tourists that Shetland is really a civilised and welcoming place.
I nearly cried
Aww and to add to it, it doesn't mention the 'Mummy', will she be looking for her pups? it's just too awful.
It always makes me angry when people believe that an animal only has value if humans can exploit it.
Very wrong and very sad.
What a fucking arsehole, somebody should throw him a fish and them club him to death!!!!!
Sorry to be blunt but that was my first reaction!!!!!
I can fully understand anyone who feels strongly enough about hurting animals not to eat meat finding this news horrifying.
As a big meat eater I dont have any more problem with the concept of killing seals for food or any other animal come to that.
My mate worked in a chicken processing factory for a month. Now that really is animal cruelty at its worst.

I eat meat too... I still find that story horrifying. Any meat I eat has been killed in the correct manner, not clubbed to death for no apparent reason and left on a beach to rot!!! mad
You really do have some very strange views Benrums0n. :undecided:
Yes DG my strange opinions will be my downfall.

i actually agree with you on this, thousands of animals are killed every year and end up on your table, i personally think if you want to eat meat you should have to kill the animal yourself not pay someone else to do it for you just to make you feel better, this case is terrible theres no doubt about that but theres things just as bad happening to children smile

No sorry still don't get it, how can you humanely kill a fit and heathy aminal? besides that none of us know what goes on in slaughter houses when the doors are locked, i guess its a subject we'll have to agree to disagree on

I think there's a very, very big difference between randomly clubbing seals to death for the hell of it and killing animals for meat to eat. I'm not arguing that people have their beliefs and views on what they eat, to me that's a whole different thread so yes, I guess we will have to agree to disagree.
I'm saying that what that man did to those seals was an act of extreme cruelty and I find it appalling.

Ya greedy basket!
I hope she chokes you...

There is a difference though between killing a seal to eat... and randomly clubbing 20 or so just for the hell of it. As for the humane issue, death is death whatever way you look at it, you can try to make it as easy as possible. Many of like to think that is what happens, but as you say Ben, I am sure many a time that is not often the case. Doesn't make it right though, and doesn't mean we should accept it as part of the process.
