I have just been listening to a programme on Radio 4 (by accident) where they were discussing the fact that the BBC have received numerous complaints, and very nasty personal comments on the BBC forums about one of the Cbeebies presenters of the Bedtime Hour show.
The young lady Cerrie Burnell is being complained about and attacked, not for being rude, swearing, being inappropiatly dressed or promoting drugs and but for only having one complete arm!!!!!!!
Yes your reading right, parents have been complaining because this young lady has a stump on one arm having lost it from the elbow up, they are claiming she should be removed from the screens because their children are asking difficult questions they dont want to answer about disabillities or because she is giving the kids nightmares!!!
I am a parent myself and find these comments unbelievable to the extreme that people can be so cruel about this young woman who has had the strength to go out and get a job in Tv knowing that she is different.
I would love to hear your views and comments on this.
Aint folk wonderful.
I dont know whether to laugh or cry.
To me this says nothing about the children or the presenter, but entirely enough about the narrow minded bigotry that is prevalent within some members of our supposedly civilised and enlightened society. That these fools, rather than educate their child about disability and show it in a positive light, would rather demonise the presenter and no doubt sow the seeds in their child's mind that this is somehow not quite right, beggars belief.
Too right! Get her off the screen, right now!
For precisely the same reason Floella Benjamin would have been frowned upon however many years ago.
Ignorance.
Amazing, I will check this out Jump.
The BBC will keep her and rightly so, unless she says somethiong deemed racist that is! wink
I used to love explaining about different people to mine, once years ago, my eldest said "whys that man so small", refering to a dwarf, right next to the man.
I said sorry to him, he said he wasnt bothered and would he like me to answer my daughter!
I said yes, he did!
Some people are so small minded, I hope Cerrie rises above it all.

I loved Floella! She always made me happy!
Bit like Rolf Harris... some people just do...
And I won't have a word said against either... biggrin
(Edit! Forgot me smiley! It looked a bit sinister without!)
I liked Hamble, Big Ted and Humpty.
And the arched window.
Hamble was a hideous evil looking doll....give me good old jemima anyday.....and dont get me started on that pretender to the throne...Tikkabilla evil
anyways people should stop mollycoddling the kids and bloody well do what parents are supposed to do and explain why people are different and not stick their heads in the sand.
I've seen her, I was watching a programme she was on with my niece, who incidently didn't even notice the arm, nor asked about it, therefore not a problem to her.
Children are very accepting, it's other people who are not so, ie., the old fashioned, bigotted parents I'm afraid.
'suppose there's no 'arm in asking

Bloody hell that would give me nightmares !!!!
Stag I thought you were an apotemnophile or was it an acrotomophile or is that me.
Apparently there were 9 complaints - the thing that gets my goat is not the fact that there were 9 complaints, lets face it people complain about any thing, but that the bbc were entertaining those complaints!
I heard her interviewed and she came across as so sensible, the perfect foil to the complainers.
Id like to see the complainants prosecuted.

9 complaints.... thats 7 more that the original russell brand/jonathan ross hoopla.... just to put it into context
bet the daily mail don't run and run with this one......
actually, whats I would do if I were the BBC would be to make all the email public and publish the names of the people who sent them, it might actually embarrass them into seeing how silly there view actually is....
I have to say as far as Floella goes it was never the fact she was black that made me dislike her it was just that she was so feckin shouty. Like one of those nursery teachers that just shout enthusiastically at children whilst taking not a bit of feckin notice what the kids say or do.
As for the new girl I will reserve judgment, she shouldnt be discriminated against obviously, but I cant help thinking with one arm she would struggle to "be a windmill, why dont you be a windmill with me ?" like Johnny Ball used to.
Insight from my youngest, who, on hearing about this has decided to write to the Beeb, saying:
"It's good that she's on TV. What matters is if she's good at her job. Parents shouldn't hide these things from their kids, they should teach them that they happen. What would they do if it happened to them? It's her living and she enjoys it so she shouldn't lose it because of stupid people. Can I have a biscuit?"
lol
LOL Witchy get him to write to Blue Peter and ask for a badge.
I got a picture on vision on by telling em Id painted it with my feet.
Happy days
I think floella was on the Marchioness when it went down
But she got out through the round window

how does this work then?
she has a real arm from the elbow down?
wow, medical advances these days are fantastic :silly: bolt
My girls haven't even noticed and if they have they haven't asked about it. But i'm sure the eldest will as she is very inquisitive. I will explain it to her the best I can as i'm unsure as to why the lady in question has half her arm missing.
I can't believe that people would be so narrow minded to complain.

Ditto...
Why should they be allowed to try and influence young minds into believing it's wrong to be different??
Anybody heard any more about this?

that's just cruel in the extreme!!! as for parents explaining to kids its just real life people dont want to be disabled!!! I am classed as disabled myself although I know many people don't see mine as a disability I was in the St John's Ambulance it all should be seen as just another disability

Wot! being in the St J Ambulance should be seen as a disability

I know the regular ambulance crews always though so, but had yet to see it in writing lol
this is a subject dear to my heart as my stepdaughter was born with a little arm, same as the girl on CBeebies, who incidentally was also born with the little arm, she didnt lose her arm. We do not see it as a disability at all, she can do everything we can other than operate a manual can opener, we have an electric one :P i remember the controversy caused originally when the CBeebies girl started and I also remember being furious about those narrow minded people who took time out of their day to *complain*. i bet half of them havent got a degree, travelled the world, passed their driving test, bungee jumped, skydived, rock climbed, zip wired or worked in Malawi with children *angry face* - she has a little arm, get over yourselves, dont see this sort of shit at the paralympics ffs
