I have never been a lover of the unions. I have been in the print all my working life, and can remember the days of the closed shop, and walked away from one or two because I did not want to join a union.
Now we have the Royal Mail striking again, with further strikes on the way. British Airways have now said they could do the same just before Xmas.
In the current climate the Royal Mail could well see this being job suicide as other large firms are finding alternative ways of getting their items delivered.
I feel that to a degree they should be thankful to have a job.....many do not have jobs.
I think their grievance towards the employers may well be justified, but it may well bite them up their arses if they lose customers on a big scale.
Are the Royal Mail right to strike, even though in the long run it could be detrimental to their own futures?
We have seen large companies go to the wall because of constant strikes, and I cannot see any sense as we stand today, to jeopardize ones job at this particular moment in time.
Are they greedy buggers or do they have genuine reasons?
I think as usual it is the general public that gets a kick in the nuts, and maybe this time big business will find more permanent ways of getting their deliveries done, but it will not be with the Royal Mail. This could be their downfall in the long term I feel.
With people using e mail to communicate and social networking sites, is the day of posting letters going to come to an end as we know it?
I feel for the guys striking. How else can they "Rage against the machine" In my heart of hearts I know that what they're doing is futile at best. As a nation we dont have the social conscience to object with any effect. Gone are the days where people looked after each other and if they didn't the state would play their part.
Now, its as long as I'm OK bollox to the rest. We're all of us, who've played a part in our society over the last 40 years guilty of being socially selfish and this has provided us with government made up of the same ideals, of course it has.
There's nothing but a crap result for the posties whether its in the next couple of months or over the next couple of years, a lose lose situation. The government are happy to let it play out as well why? because it puts the shit that they're dealing out to us at the moment onto a back burner by taking the publics eye.
I really really wish the nation would stand behind the posties and threaten a national strike. The whole freaking lot stopping. Of course its not going to happen. We're all far to scared of the financial implications, We bow low to the gods of credit we're he;d by the preverbial bollox. The machine wins, end of fourth quarter.
STOP!
Hey wait,
wait a minute Mr Postman,
wai ai ait patientlyyyyyy
lp
These times are difficult as "power" has now been given back to the employer in as much as they can ride a little roughshod over the workforce pretty safe in the knowledge that given the current climate there is little the workforce are prepared to do..
I do understand that RM have grievances but I have to say the strike action does seem a little bit like Turkeys Voting for Christmas..
firstly on the posties defence.....they are not on strike for more money....so I think it would be wrong to say they simply being greedy.
What they are objecting to is modernisation plans, which in the main, will mean fewer jobs. Now in current climate, and with technology moving along as it is, it would seem futile, and that the post office has to try and modernise to stay alive. I do hope they manage to find a middle path soon, as I do think 30p to post a letter to anywhere in the UK is pretty good value. I hate to think of private firms taking over who will charge 30p if posting to a big city....but should you live in countryside I can see them chargeing a £1 or more.
Yeah Parcel Force is a separate company. I think this could have been sorted with the union entering into dialogue regarding the modernisation of RM without resorting to strikes.
All the strikes end up doing is alienating the working man* from the customers and therefore denying them sympathy.
If you look at the miners strike, the miners strike didn't affect the average working man* therefore there was a lot of sympathy for them.
* for man read male or female working operative!
The posties are not doing this for more money, they are doing it for the survival of Royal Mail, over the years the government has been selling bits of Royal Mail off...first the parcel division and now the counters, then the government opened up competition on the letters, when you get your mail in the morning, check up in the right hand corner, you may see another postal mark other then Royal Mail...but this wasn't delivered by a postie from DHL or TNT it was delivered by a postie from Royal Mail and at a would seem that companies like TNT and DHL can cherry pick all the big buisiness's who send out lots of mail by under cutting Royal Mail, they then collect this mail but make Royal Mail deliver it,now Royal Mail cannot refuse, because the government says say's they can't...the government opened up competition but still expect Royal Mail to do all the hard work...the government forecast all this...because they want to sell Royal Mail off...now before you say what about the profit that Royal Mail has been making, this has been created by closing post offices, increasing the size of deliveries, cutting services and job losses...its the only way...because its not coming from the profit of the mail,so next year and the year after more services will be cut,to make a profit...the management call it modernisation, thats just a fancy word for union should be sitting down with the government, not the management...they are the one's with the real power to change things...they can but won't...they can get Royal Mail back to what is was...A public service providing a cheap method of delivering your mail...and investing the profit back into the company instead of shareholders.
i think all posties that were'nt born here should be repatriated and us indigenous white english should go and work for royal mail for longer hours and on less wages than the present posties of all shades work for. surely that would fit in with mandy i mean royal mails modernisation plan ?
the cwu should be included in the discussions for wage and conditions cutting and british jobs for british workers. organisations, people combining in their interests (trade unions) should be outlawed and all the social gains acheived as a result of their existance should be reversed. that way, we could all line up at the gates of the employers work place and fight amonst ourselves for who should work hardest and longest for the least. well its only market forces at play here. oh, and if the cheif executive and his management team achieve their modernisation plan, they should receive a handsome bonus to boot. and, if the government was to cut all benefits to everyone (excluding bankers of course) more people would work and work for less surely. that would make us a low wage economy and more competetive in the world market and more able to compete against the lower wage economies (bowl of rice a day) to make goods that nobody wants. ???
only so long as i am not included in the above.
funny init. today, apparently, mcdonalds announced that it was closing its 2 outlets in iceland as the icelanders could'nt afford a big mac anymore. i wonder how long it will be before they withdraw from uk plc ?
i'm a european from planet earth, living in a big fuck off house on one of the most expensive exclusive roads between kenilworth and coventry, own it with no mortgage, drive a mercedes, old one, 2005, that i'm about to change because its getting old. owe zero and have a healthy bank balance i could possibly retire on. i'm white skinned and red blooded. i cough, fart, sweat, eat, drink and sleep just like everyone else of all shades and cultures. i go skiing in the winter and sunbath in warmer climbs in the summer. i can go anywhere in the world i want at anytime i want and frequently do. i suppose calling me a communist or a socialist is some kind of way to negate any value in the content of my threads. disregard him, he is a leftist ! you is very cleva
i should have said, i'm a white, english european from planet earth with red blood in my veins like everyone else in humanity. sorry. please accept this as an editorial correction.
do you mean "new" labour supporter kenty ?
Getting back to the original topic...
I cannot understand how strike action will help their cause in the long run.
People will/are finding other ways of getting things delivered, and if it continues more people and big businesses will do the same.
In the long run whilst their actions may well bring about some change, will it be to the loss of many more jobs within the Royal Mail?
yes, your right kenty. they should not strike and they should accept longer hours, less pay and less of them in a job. its for the best and the b.a. staff should accept the same. so should the firemen and bin men and everyone else in every other industry accept finance/banking and politics. its for the best. its in all our interests in the long run and we will then inherit the kingdom of heaven in the after life. hang on, except you and me of course.
oh i forgot to say, if i was a socialist, communist or any other kind of leftist in the labour party, i would be expelled but you would'nt kenty.
I do not think anyone on here would call me a leftie.
As for the longer hours and less pay blah blah....
Have people learnt nothing about strikes?
Ask the miners or the Printers or the car builders, all gone.
In todays climate with 3 million and rising on the dole, be thankful you have a job with regular income, and a means to pay your bills.
No wonder the TUC have no clout anymore, and the unions are about as much use as a wet blanket in winter.
The employers at Royal Mail do not get a bad screw, that is coming from someone I heard on the radio today.
You can ask for anything, but it is what you end up getting that counts, and maybe Royal Mail employees could end up losing more than they think they will gain by striking.
For some it is a long walk to the local dole office.
foxy, is that question to me or kenty ?
