Well maybe not an invasion, but certainly not exactly above board!

The IOC has criticised the advert and has contacted the Argentinian National Olympic Committee about the advert and received assurances that the games would not be used as a political platform.
According to the BBC website, Zylberberg was in The Falklands to take part in a marathon, no mention of pretending to be a war veteran,
Having watched the ad, where is the so called desecration of a war memorial?
Quote by Rogue_trader
The ad was in poor taste.
It was needlessly provocative at least and downright offensive to some.
Politics and sport should never meet. Go and watch some of the films on you tube regarding the 1936 summer games in Berlin to see why politics and sport should never come together.
I hope the Argentine team are not made the butt of any retaliation as it is not them who has fuelled this debacle.

I feel sorry for Argentine athletes who are not going to get the warmest of receptions in the UK during the Olympics if thier sport governing body and government continue to use the games as a political arena.

He pretended to be a War Vetran to get on the Island, pretty funny since the youngest vetran I know is 48 next this month and would struggle to get into the Olympic field hockey teams, as this guy was only 4 years old when the Invasion by Argentina took place I think it pretty foolish of the authorities on the Island to have swallowed his story.
Quote by MidsCouple24
They will continue with stunts like this to divert attention away from pathetic political issus as Galtieri did in 1982 but they are as powerless now to take the islands as they were then.
Quote by MidsCouple24
It would be nice if the Olympic committee took some action against the desecration of a British War Memorial though and banned him from the Olympics, perhaps this would be a good deterrent to thier Governments use of sport for politics.

I think it is foolish that you did not listen to the commentry contained within the clip which states "He claims he was filmed in March whilst passing himself off as one of his Countries war vetrans whilst taking part in a marathon with other British survivors of the 1982 War" how can you make that statement it is an absolute pile of crap

Some people see a war memorial the same as a grave, it represents much to many, and using it as a training apparatus is insulting, offensive and desecration , I doubt he would have done it had the significance of his actions not been his intention.
I think that if this had been a film of Rooney doing the same in training for a match the condemnation would be much higher, there are some here that will argue black is white just to look superior

Of course he was filmed in March. That's when the Stanley marathon was run. He would have run alongside the current Governer of the islands and the womans race was won by an Argentine.

I would not speak for you, I speak for those who have respect for fallen heroes and see this for what it is, I too will cheer for genuine athletes of all nations but not for this man who has shown sport and the British people such disrespect.

Oh whoopee they invaded an island defended by a small Marine Naval Party and a virtually untrained civil defence force numbering around 10 men using armoured vehicles and thier best elite special forces backed by Marines, they took casualties and inflicted no casualties on the British. Yes it was a close run thing, most battles in History have been that way, Nelson at Trafalger, Wellington at Waterloo, The battle of the Bulge, the D Day landings, The Battle of Britain, the defence of Rorke's Drift, were all close run things, No army ever won a battle without some luck and bluff.

Because people are here defending the actions of an Argentine sportsman whilst on other threads running down British Athletes for any actions they consider to be bringing sport or his team or England into disrepute, take a look at the new england manager thread for proof of this, an Argentinian athlete lets his team down and does something to offend others and he gets support with cries of "it's only a stunt", whilst British atheletes and sportsman are the scourge of the Country for anything they do wrong, there is something wrong with that.
Quote by MidsCouple24
In 1982 Galterie believed the British would do nothing about thier invasion of the Falkland Islands, he believed Argentina could do anything they wanted and we would sit back and take it, me and a few mates showed him different, this week a few Argentines are thinking the same, and some here are going to sit back and take it, but not everyone
I tell you what I do admire about the Argentines, they do get worked up about things they believe in, they don't like back and take it up the ass because believing in something is so wrong and "making a fuss which would be so unBritish

Is Argentina and the UK at war?
So by exercising on a memorial it is desecration? Perhaps people should write to the organisers of the Flanders Fields Marathon who desecrate the hundreds of thousands whose names appear on the Menin Gate.

To my mind it is the accompanying rhetoric, not the exercises, that makes the use of Falkland Islands war memorial a desecration.
This looks like propaganda trying to get support for an unpopular government in Argentina (again).

I appologise, I didn't realise it was different when Rooney embarrasses the nation and Sport with his private life and when the captain of the Argentine Hockey Team embarasses the nation and the sport by bringing it into disrepute making false statements (we train on Argentine Soil) creating dissent and using it to promote political views, I thought that was all the same but I appologise for my error you are of course absolutely right, it is different and we should despise British Athletes and sportsman simply because they are British
