I have gone a little quiet... because I have been out meeting people!
A quiet corner in a beer garden of a pub was exactly what I had in mind. I suggest next weekend, either the Friday or Saturday evening. I don't know the pubs very well here in London., but perhaps somewhere central would suit everyone.

Harry,
I notice that you are organising something in Thetford this weekend. Hope that it goes well. If anybody is up for a pub meet tomorrow (Saturday), leave a post here. Or am I being hopelessly over-optimistic?

Cheers mate, I got 49 views here, 28 views at another place and 0 reponses but as Sassy-Seren says don't ask don't get.
Ended up having a great evening anyway with a couple I'd chatted to in chatroom, but then met at a social, got on very well with and kept in touch. Socials are the key.

If socials are the key and we can't get a good one going in London, which social would you recommend attending which is close to London?

All socials are good in their own way. As for close to London, define close - You can fly to scotland in an hour or so!

years back,on another site, in another universe etc etc I held a couple of socials in pubs behind Waterloo station.. quiet little places... afternoon affairs.
There have a couple in the same area held on this site too... better venue I hasten to add as well.
Maybe anywhere near a good communication route
eg: train terminus... tube station with a few lines...
lp
I found a Wetherspoons in the O2 centre on Finchley Road when I was up there. Loads of space, great food and close to the tube

leaving the organisor out of pocket.....

As Ahabs has rightly pointed out, the way round this is to charge a nominal fee to cover costs.
Work out what costs need covering then only stick someone's name down as confirmed when they have sent the money IN ADVANCE!
You may need to 'frighten' people a couple of weeks before, with 'this event is not going to happen' unless X amount of people who have expressed an interest send their money in now!
This usually works and the money starts to flow in, but it is annoying to put all that time and effort into organising something and only know a couple of weeks beforehand if it is going to happen.

Hey diezel,
It seems like I've spent my whole life on this site trying to transform the virtual into the real, but no one seems to be that interested.
Anyway, there's a Wetherspoons pub near Forest Hill station called The Capitol. It is a vast, sprawling place in a building that was a cinema in the 1920s. We could easily find a few tables in that place and blend in quite nicely. So, without further ado, I suggest a meet tomorrow night, Saturday, April 25 at If you are interested, say so in this thread. Tomorrow at 6pm will be the cut-off point and I'll post the exact place in the pub where we will all meet. Obviously, if no one expresses interest, there will be no meet. Here are the pub details:
The Capitol,
11-21 London Road,
Forest Hill,
London, SE23 3TW
For those without their own transport, it is two-minutes walk from Forest Hill train station.
Cheers,
R
