Hi Ff - oh yes!!! it takes a while to get accepted, I know , I was once a single guy, but if you keep plugging away in the local chatroom you'll eventually become a regular. We often have room-socials (usually in a pub lol) and thats where arrangements are often made for 'proper' people like to put faces to nick-names before committing themselves - just be patient and you'll get yours.

Meets do happen I had one (scratches head hard, consults diary - I had several in May - don't let the fact I went to Wales for one of mine put you off). Socials are the key as Jus says - I've had far more fun AFTER some, but you have to attend the ACTUAL socials for a few years first and it isn't guaranteed.
What I'm saying in a most cumbersome way is put in loads of effort and it can pay off.
