On channel 4 on saturday and sunday night. I've only just managed to watch this (i had to tape it as i'm up early in a morning to go to work).
So if you watched it what do you think?
I sort of guessed the top two but there were some suprises in it for me.
War movies :scared: Baz loves them and i spend all my time trying to avoid them  rolleyes
I didn't see it, but i'd guess the top 2 would be Platoon and Apocalypse Now.
Alothough the director of Apocalypse Now says its not a war fil at all... Its a study of the nature of Man... So there you go lol
not owning a TV - i missed it
however my personal faves have to be saving private ryan, platoon, and blackhawk down.
Personally - i don't go for the brave and stupid kind of war films - all gung ho and back in time for tea and medals. I prefer mines to be almost shockingly realistic - after all if you are going to tell a story - tell it like it is!

I really enjoyed this as there are so many 'classics' I haven't seen. I realised how much i really need to see Apocolyse Now, Deer Hunter, bridge Over the River Kawi and all those. But - I did have terrible nightmares that night - I think it was the clips from The Pianist and Schindlers List.
I really don't mind war films............all the uniforms makes my knees go all wobbly....
Hello Sarge !! wink
I would have said that 'Great Escape' should have been at the top of the list.....
helen i am going to disagree
saving private ryan and apocalys now
MIkeC
Hmmmm. Not sure that Saving Private Ryan deserves to be the best war movie ever, though it is certainly a good movie. There were some other films that I thought were stretching the definition somewhat. For example, Spartacus? I mean, it's a good film (a little corny, but great entertainment), but not really what I would call a war movie.
Still, I suppose if you have to find 100 of them you are going to end up stretching the point occasionally. Does anyone else think that these lists are becoming a little gratuitous? What's next? The 100 greatest movies with 'The' in the title? rolleyes

Oh dear, I have gone from new father to grumpy old man in one easy move! redface
My personal favourite is "Ice Cold In Alex" starring John Mills, Sylvia Syms and Anthony Quale. Made in 1958 and shot in black and white, it is a rather untypical World War II film. It is perhaps best known for the bar scene, where John Mills downs an ice cold beer after an arduous trek across the deserts of North Africa.
I missed the show...but was Casuaties of War...with Sean Penn and Michael J Fox on the list.....that was a good film!
"Broad sword calling Danny boy, broad sword calling Danny boy!" "We got company!" cool

Check this out for the full list of results
Ice Cold in Alex - great film but nothing like the book. It surprised me when I read it last year but in the book the officer is an alcoholic and the Sgt gets the nurese (Bilko????) Not the John Mills storey we all know!
The Cruel Sea - again not quite as good as the book but still one of the best films about the war at sea.
As for more recent ones, Mephis Belle showed what it was really like to be flying daylight raids 60 years ago.
Thanks for posting the link. Having just read the full list (I saw bits of both programmes but not the whole thing) I have just realised that Waterloo wasn't even mentioned!!
I have to say that it is one of my favourite films. Christopher Plummer as Wellington and Rod Steiger gives an absolutely spellbinding performance as Napoleon. The recreation of the battle itself is highly detailed and gives a fascinating account of one of the most important battles in Europe.

Page 1 of "Top 10 Epic Battles" has a mention of Waterloo and the breathtaking sight of man and animal in their thousands ( not their dozens, with clones CGI'd in ).
Grrrrrrrrr, Missed it, bugger, that’s what you get for dismissing all tv as bollox and not watching it any more.
Saving Private Ryan.
Fair storyline, but 10 / 10 for realism, now I know that there are a few ex and serving ppl on this site, and you have to admit, that zoop zoop zoop of the .50’s cracking overhead was sooooooooooo real (shiver)
Hamburger Hill
Summed up the whole concept of how strange and surreal an engagement is, one minute you are pegging behind the troop in front, (who is pegging behind the troop in front), you know its hitting the fan somewhere because you can hear it, but you are just moving up, all of a sudden all hell breaks loose because its your turn …………………. And then just as fast, its all over…………………………. Well researched.
Apocalypse Now
Good but a bit too deeply involved in the psychology side of combatants, cracking action scenes though.
The Deer Hunter
As above, but more so.
Behind Enemy Lines.
Baaaaaaaaaaaad cinematography, excellent story, has to be in the top ten.
But of course the #1 slot, has to be………….. Sgt Bilko the movie…………
Lmfao ……………………. Counting up the brownie points, looking around atcha like the cat that just had alllllllllllllll the cream
Sorry guys, just couldn’t b bothered with the smiley things tonite.

I can,t believe u have,nt seen these movies girl, even if tv is a load of bollocks you have,nt lived (maybe a bit strong) until you,ve watched these movies.
Start off with Deer Hunter first, hold onto a partners hand and with the other a strong drink..and .enjoy rolleyes
Great war movies. I am a pacifist lol
I only caught the last 30 or so but I thought it was a bit unfair with them talking about how they end or how a major character dies sad I had to keep switching over to the other side when a film I hadn't seen/couldn't remember how it finished came on. Kellys Heroes and Cross Of Iron are in my top 20 fav films of all time biggrin
the list won't load up for me.....sooooooo who won?

Yeah I know - it's because I wasn't born when the good stuff came out. So all this time I've been watching movies as they come out, forgetting to watch older ones. There's loads of even quite recent films I haven't seen from the early 90s cos I was too young - yet to watch stuff like My Own Private Idaho etc. It's cos our video store is a load of rubbish and i can't afford to buy films yet.

Schindler's List. One of my all-time fave films. Brilliant. Very moving. I'm not really a major war film fan (ignoring a pun-opportunity with "major" there... ok, my coat's on the hook) as I tend to go for action/sci-fi, but quite often these cross over anyway and there are some just great war movies out there. Deer Hunter was on after the top-100 so pity you didn't set that to record too. I've got it waiting to be watched. I really didn't agree with Private Ryan coming top. Great film - yes; top 5 - probably; but no.1? Not quite.
I think the problem with these lists is that people who might only have seen 3 or 4 war films can vote and don't know how great some of the others are in comparison (for the public-voted lists anyway). You shouldn't be allowed to vote unless you've a fair knowledge of a good few of the contenders. It comes down to "which good film is the most popular or recent". Like that top-100 musicians of the last millenium around 2000 they did. I remember Bob Geldof going off about picking pop stars with almost no original talent over Mozart, for instance.

Totally, Will... What about "Top 100 top-100s". Can't need many more to make a full list.. Then they can have their "talking heads" commenting on themselves commenting on a particular entry... Confused?
Fully expecting a sketch show by a well-known comic (any one of them) to come up with a mickey-take any day now.

I can't believe no one as mentioned "WHEN WE WERE SOLDIERS" Mel Gibson really played the role well and yet another fine example of victory against all odds.
Next would have to be Saving Private Ryan. For the Realism factor. Dodgy story line but probably the best opening scene ever seen on film...

Battle of Britain ,, for some bizzare reason i find the spitfire a thing of great beauty redface , Great film too

A colleague of mine several years ago, when it came out, went to see it at the cinema with his misses, and actually felt nauseous and almost fainted from the first scene to Private Ryan. He said it was the continuous and very intense gunshots constantly flying around.
It would also be easy (but in bad taste) to get onto talking about sex again from here with Saving Ryan's Privates, the porn industry's take on the film.
