3-way grids

The 3-way grids you get on street, 3 covers for something after another, sometimes 2 or 1.......
My ex used to think walking over the 3-way grids was bad luck, and would therefore go to any measures to avoid walking on one, including being carried by me. This struck me as odd but a little quirky and endearing and thought no more of it.
Until today.
Going up in the lift with a young couple living in the same block of flats, I overheard the girl mention the very same thing, that 3-way grids are unlucky and everyone knows it. The bloke was clueless as he'd never heard of it before. Which led me to thinking.......
Is it just women who seem to know it's apparently bad luck, or do you guys know it as well?
I'd never heard of it before I met my ex, and the poor fella in the lift seemed to be the same.

I heard that years ago, and whilst I'm not normally particularly superstitious I do occasionally find myself stepping around them.
I think it's a variation on the old superstition about not treading on the cracks in the pavement, now that relatively few pavements have paving slabs any more.

They're 3 or less manhole type covers.

Can't think of a better or correct name for them, but nowadays they're normally what phone and TV companies use to route cables underground. Have a look when you're out for them.... smile
