acronyms actually spell a word - such as polo(Pants Off Legs Open)
Two different definations...
Chambers English Dictionary, who offer the
definition; "a word formed from or based on the initial letters or syllables of
other words".
define it as "a pronounceable word formed
from each of the first letters of a descriptive phrase".
Im happy with either.... both ways are used in my field of work (some annoyingly so).

I looked up a couple in the dictionary and was rather surprised to find some had fallen into common usage as proper words... F.U.B.A.R. and S.N.A.F.U. both make an appearance, although in a politer version of the real acronym! :shock:

A mnemonic is an aide-memoire. As PL said, it's a sentence, the initial letters help you remember the order of things, or how to spell a word. A popular one with kids is 'big elephants can't always use small elevators' for 'because'. I have loads for remembering the order of the planets from the Sun.
MILF is an acronym, but GTFO isn't.

contractions are an abbreviation that has been squeezed, Mr, can't etc
things like KISS keep it simple stupid, are both a mnemonic and an acronym.
ROYGBIV for the rainbow colours is just a mnemonic.
