 Can you imagine the phone bill if you were to phone people in several countries all within a few minutes of each other?
It's not just a means of chatting to your mates - it's more about talking to many people all over the world and all for the cost of a few pence in the electric meter cool wink

1978, one 9ft copper pipe, 1 3ft x 3ft square of copper sheet, 1 shiney new cobra 148 gtl dx
11 mtr sideband with the US roaring in from all angles................... sigh, good days rolleyes
  oh sorry redface surprisedops: remenissing
(now fully licenced and proud of it )
**sigh** Miss my days in the US. Minimal regulation, maximum wattage and enough real estate to put any antenna you wanted. Best part was that you could ERECT towers (uptp 150ft) without any permission at all. *sigh* Yup it was the cobra 148, couple of different galaxies and even a MOTOROLA (very rare bird).
Dawn, nothing like reaching out to touch someone, whether it is intimately side by side or over the airwaves. Just remember, IF there is a nuclear winter, it will probably be ONLY the hams that will have any communications in this fecked up world....so be thankful you have a nerd that is probably more boy scout or Macgyver than you know.
Just my coppers worth. TA
Dawn this is what Ian needs in your garden

Ps tell him there are about 6 power supplies on ebay at mo
Sparky are you trying to make me and Ian get a divorce because any minute now you are going to have a solicitors bill mad:x:x

Like the good Ham I am my moto is :-
If you can not communicate the least you can do is "shut up" and go QRT lol

(thats me in QSO with myself, that way I offend no body)

Ah yes...... those were the days! 1982, 27 Mhz FM, 40 channels, 18 feet vertical dipole on the side of my parent's house (no it wasn't high enough!) and numerous transceivers. What fun I had with only 4 watts. Well I was only 15!
I passed my Foundation Licence 3 years ago. Equipment is a Yaesu FT-840 and a half wave dipole for 40 metres. I sometimes work portable at my parent's QTH, as they have a big garden and I only have a one bedroom flat. I can get the dipole straight down the length of my parent's garden. I am restricted to day time operating only, as the shack is my parent's dining room. I have never worked anywhere near VK, but I live in hope.
Sparky, I wonder if you have tried working portable?

VK is easy when conditions allow. I've even manged to work it from the car a couple of times.
currently your best off working 20 metres during the day, and maybe 40 during the evening.
100 watts on 20 from the car even got me swaziland the other day.

This is severe TECHNO-SHITE (tm) and in danger. I have to stand shoulder to shoulder with my fellowess Mod here. It's total shite.

MMMMmmm.... Free international and domestic phone calls with VoIP. I don't have shares in it or anything, it's just a personal recommendation of something that is bloody good. I put a thread up about a little while ago. Thought it would be a great thing for a site like this. Easily blockable telephone - just what this place needs for sifting the timewasters.

It's been around for years in Amateur Radio - first off as Packet Radio, then as EchoLink............ and you can link your radio to your phone (where legislation allows) and to the internet...........
I use too - it's brilliant, FREE calls over the internet to all your mates and family. Even my rather aged and even more PC illiterate than me mother is using it to speak to our scattered across the globe family.
Simple and free and no 40 metre cables! lol
biggrin

Sorry to bring you away from your womanly duties like ironing etc....
are in the process of being bought out by orange internet. my geek daddy tells me that orange internet should very shortly own bulldog, wanadoo and ... and will be renaming them all under their orange internet banner.
the phones are already being junked off at maplins.
the end result is that orange internet are (apparantly) going head to head against btopenworld in the 8mb adsl broadband / freeeview tv and voip telephone service.
SEE - Geeks can be useful.
(and you'd be suprised to know how domesticated I am  )

To all my fellow nerds have this morning worked two vk6's on 20m with a delta loop at 35 ft, but deta loop has a twist fed at top of loop not bottom.
have worked mobile on 20 and 40, but only localy.
just getting into echolink, now we have a local 2m acess point.
just been listening to the frankly speaking net 1966 top band on AM
