Ooo a debate thread lol
I'm just wondering what people think, generally, about 'performing animals' in a circus.
I've just learnt that there's one coming a few miles away which features horses & goats, and allegedly Zebras.
Of course, daughter has already heard from school friends and is begging to go..... and I feel soooo torn....because my head says there's absolutely no way!! I'm very not comfortable with the idea of 'performing' animals, particularly within a big top environment (regardless of what kind of animal)...but the fact that they have Zebras doesnt sit well with me at all. I cant imagine these creatures 'performing' in all the heat & noise, being transported all over the country etc AND on principalhate the thought of paying for tickets means they will continue to use these animals in the future........but I'm up against a 7 year old with an attitude  and I do feel bad that my oppinions on this effectively mean she isnt going to no damn circus :jagsatwork:
There are only 7 ciruses left that include animals in their 'performances' - I actually thought it was illegal in the UK to use anything other than dogs and horses (Palomino/ dressage included) tbh, but evidently it isnt  ...so is it a dying tradition/ art form which should be preserved if the animals are given utmost care...... or are circuses things of the past?
what do you think? dunno
nope!
animals in circus's... me no likeee
i may have more to say later... though I doubt it'll make any sense
lp
Don't like the idea of animals in circuses, no confused
dont agree with it mad we taught our kids why we dont take them. If she wants to see animals take her to a safari park if you have any near you that is.
i was taken by a large sherry producer to see the Palomino horse's peform in Jerez and have to say was spectacular but i felt very uncomfortable know how they train them to do these things, but as a guest in Spain i had to keep a dignefied silence sad
after a major tantrum (cue screaming her head off and telling how much she hates me :scared: how I'm a crap mum who never lets her do anything she wants , yadda yadda and storming off to her room with full on waterworks turned on and a door slammed so hard it almost took the wall out rolleyes) I managed to shout louder and explain that I feel its cruel.....
and fook me, she's agreed. Says she doesnt want to go now *phew* because zebras are suposed to live in Africa
but, there must be plenty of people who don't feel the way I do, otherwise these things wouldnt exist anymore, surely?

Andalusians are beautiful aren't they biggrin I've worked with horses most of my life and it always makes me chuckle to see the spoiled brats which most purebreds are.
Andalusians come here to York during the summer to perform. They always astonish me through what they can do and their utter beauty.
As for the lion tiger elephant - type circus it's shameful and cruel :(

well yes the horses are extremley well looked after and was great to watch, i just have a thing about training animals unless its basic obediance as in dogs.

What a relief Dark, you might well have had to run the gauntlet of angry animal welfare demonstrators outside. These things seem to be on the way out. Some councils have banned them, and the government are said to be introducing an almost total ban in the next Animal Welfare Bill.
I personaly dont like to see performing animals in a circus and wouldnt take my children, because i belive the constant changes in enviroment and traveling cant be good for them. Im not against animals being trained if it is done in a way that is fun for the animals and in a kind not cruel way. I also have no issue with watching animals perform if the training is as above and it is evident they are enjoying their performance.
Dont think im making much sense, the colds setting in and my brain is going in to hibernation.

the goverment, never belive a thing they say!!!!
coming from someone who loved the circus as a kid i took my son to a one with animals in and he loved it but tbh we have been to some recently (no animals think electric was in the name was all lazers and strobes etc) and they are much more modern and prob kids can relate to the more modern and animal kinder ones than the traditional circus
I hate the thought of animals performing in circuses or anywhere else mad
Its not natural for them, its just plain cruelty in my eyes and I wouldn't take my kids to see it.
Hopefully one day there will be a law against it and circuses will be a thing of the past.

dont like animals in circus's, actually dont like circus's. i hate clowns, very scary lol
slightly off topic, but what about all these little kids that are now being trained to preform in the acrobat circus's, watched a programe and its horrible the way they are treated. I know it may be a route out to the poverty they may otherwise experience has been a argument, but its exploitation, which isnt right be it animals or humans
dark, why not let your daughter go along to the afternoon see teh animals thing some of these places do, once she see's how they travel and live she may be a future supporter against circus's, maybe 7 is to young??? i dunno

Mmmm (thoughtful pondering type sound)
Ok, circuses with performing animal – nope dead against it, I don’t like it all. There is nothing in it for the animals at all.
Dark,
For me, I quite agree with your stance and it seems that all has worked out well in the Dark household.
Now my quandary is that I took my kids to Sea World Florida recently and had no qualms I doing so. So in very basic terms what is the difference?
Quite honestly, would I go back to Sea World – absolutely I would. Would I go and see Shamu do his stuff? Damn right.
I am off to ponder that now and may come back later, cos right now I feel a bit of a hypocrite.
Circuses do invoke intensified feelings. What about horse/dog/ferret racing.
Crufts?
Agricultural/Country Fairs where animals are 'shown'. They are locked up throughout the day and sent up and down the country for our entertainment.
Is this considered in the same way? Or is it less offensive somehowconfused
I don't go about doing this. I accept its part of life in our country, so I don't have any strong feelings about it.
On principle I disagree with circus animal acts, however if you ban animal acts do you also ban animal actors, animals trained to perform tricks/stunts for TV and film, do you ban working animals, ever seen a police dog jumping through fiery hoops etc. if it’s ok to train a dog or horse to do a thing is it or ok to train another animal to do the same kind of thing. It’s a can of worms this one for sure.
Oh and I’m with Fem on the clown issue, unnatural freakish bastards the lot of em. :eeek:

Wonderful woman!! kiss And the apple doesn't fall far from the tree does it? (As my sons keep reminding me whenever they do summat obnoxious!)
.
I would never go to a show that had 'performing' animals. Just like I don't go to zoo's.
In fact, anything like that really upsets me!
I don't like them either, the last time I went to a circus and saw a baby elephant performing I thought "this isn't for me" and I just wanted to take him/her away from it all. Plus the lions, tigers, horses etc., they should be free not stuck in the circus ring! evil
I went to a sealife centre in the Dominican Republic year before last and I went swimming with dolphins. It was truly an amazing experience. We went to watch the sea lion show and I took my goddaughter to watch... it made me cry. Something emotional just crept up on me and I'm not really sure where it came from. They were so clever and it just seemed so sad to me. They were obviously well looked after and clearly having fun but it just upset me.
I guess that's the same thing as a circus or a zoo. I'm sure the animals are well looked after but in an ideal world I'd like all animals to be in the wild where they belong.
I supose, in my head, there's no big debate... I dont agree with it, so she's not going. Simple.
BUT
just because of my oppinion on it, do I have the right to say 'no you cant go' - when on the face of it, its just a circus ffs! It's MY issues with the zebra thing that means I wont go and I dont want to be part of putting money into the circus's (sp??) pocket ..... I could get one of my friends to take her, if they're going, so she at least gets to experience a travelling circus at an age where she'll love it ..... but the decision has been made for her, and not in a 'education and guidance' way, more a 'mum putting her foot down and imposing her beliefs' way dunno
blimey - this is a headache!
and then there's the issue of whether animals should be in a circus or not in the first place
I dont really want to open the can of worms to be honest...parenting classes might be a better option! lol

but, what is 'free'?
moved from the circus to a zoo?
how the hell do they get hold of these 'wild' animals in the first place? dunno
I'd have wanted to 'set it free' too Jaymar...but it's not like you could open the cage and let it run off back to the wild, or take it home and look after it, is it  lol
I'm off to google and do some research, cos the bee in me bonnet wont shut up wink
Unfortunately, with captive breeding, humanisation etc., even if you did play the good samaritan and take the animals to their natural habitat, they wouldn't survive sad
I once had a friend in a circus who was the grandaughter of the owner .Iused to see her once a year and she used to take me around to see all the animals . They were beautifully looked after and loved so Ican't see any problem.
I stopped the kids from going to a circus on holiday last year. They didn't really understand my point when we had ourselves taken them to the zoo previously.
So I took the kids round the back of the circus and showed them how the animals travel.
They worked out why I'd said no themselves
p.s. yes I am aware all circus animals travel in different ways and not all are the same but some are horrendous
Im not a lover of the circus.... for all sorts of reasons. Ive only been to one when i was a kid that had an animal in it... think that was horses. I know the majority that visit where I live dont have animals performing anymore, which is a good thing.
I used to live on a Zoo estate once though.....best years of my life!
xanaisx
I would go if the animals ate the performers.

Uh uh that's my son you are quoting word for bloody word, were you here on Sunday when I refused to buy him yet another Liverpool shirt as he needs both, a yellow one and the red one? rolleyes
On the circus front, no way, I do not condone them at all. I actually get very angry just thinking about them!! I have an issue with zoos too. I'm torn really, on the one hand zoos provide conservation and the chance for our children to appreciate animals they may never get to see as they would be extinct without the zoos. Then on the other hand we are going against nature, with the exception of the protection of the animals hunted by man for sport and things that I cannot bear to think of sad
An issue with zoos, ohhhhh do not get me started! mad We were at London Zoo with college :P i was staring at an empty enclosure when i saw there was a family of very scared looking skunks in there banging into things....the enclosure was dirty, full of drink bottles and cans etc etc...one of the skunks was bleeding. I went and got a zoo keeper and said *If you dont do something about that in the next hour i'm going to call every newspaper in the country*
The skunks were gone when i got back lol
we modify animal behaviour all the time, how many of us think it`s cute when a (pet) dog gives you his paw, or a jerbil runs on his treadmill?.the question is how they are trained and treated. i dont think any of these (wild) animals have ever been wild, and their wild cousins are being culled in family groups or subject to persecution from poeple who have to make a living from the land these animals want to live bottom line is in the way we treat these animals, whether they are wild(which is a tough life generally)or whether we are the custodians of their welfare.i write this as a real animal lover and a lover of open spaces and wilderness
I used to get dragged to the Circus as a child - hated it bored me rigid thought it was all very tawdry. When they used to be aired on telly at Christmas i.e. Billy Smarts or Chipperfields circuses they were literally the dogs b****x. The reality of provincial Circuses was quite different they were IMHO total trash i hated every living breathing minute as a kid. Thats my feelings witout the animal stuff! Remember having hamburgers which came out of tins from Circuses too. see even more cheap tatty stuff!! - Oh the memery bleeuurrgghh!!
