Rethinking that, I should have said that it depends more on their attitude. Being promiscuous isn't in itself offputting, its the idea that someone will shag anyone and you'll do too.

Yes I agree. I have a friend who is really quite attractive but he as a reputation that he would shag a raggy salmon tin. Now no doubt he is good at his art but its nice to feel that the person I might fuck is at least attracted to me and is not just after somewhere to warm his cock for a while.

Im certainly not judging or condeming anyone elses choices. I dont have a problem with anyone elses promiscuity. Far from it. All Im trying to say is that for me personally i dont want to be 'any hole's a goal' for someone. I like to think that that someone actually wants to play with me.

I am, by some people's definition, promiscuous. I am less promiscuous now than when I was younger, when I was, to be honest, a total slut.
Am I attractive? Fuck knows.
However, I have self respect, and a clear understanding of why I do, what I do. That'll do for me, and other people seem to be at ease with that.
My mother, several tabloid newspaper editors, and probably some of the people in this thread, don't seem to get that the only over-riding principle is 'do no harm' (S&M doesn't count :-) ).
People who judge those they stigmatize as unduly promiscuous will probably do more harm, over time, than I will. No-one's ever hanged themselves for shagging me (though they may have had regrets in the morning) but prurient criticism in the press of 'promiscuous' behaviour has had precisely that effect on a friend of mine.

And that goes back to what i was saying about attitude. I was attracted to because of your attitude long before I saw what you look like. And (not sure how to quote twice yet) Duncan made an excellent point about sexual health. Personally I always always always use a condom with any other partner than my own. Its an unnegotiable rule. But there are many for whom bareback with swinging parnters is perfectly acceptable. Thats up to them, it wont do for me.

Also you can't consider promiscuity as being an independent occupation. It flourishes with the assistance of other people. So people become promiscuous as their popularity and reputation grows.
And that is where someone who is a sexual 'success story' is loved and understood or becomes a monster whom people begin to despise.
So the rise of a promiscuous person is inevitably the result of a combined effort. How else can they get to that position?
So the attractiveness is there either by strength of personality or through reputation and word of mouth reporting.
So at what point does it turn sour? when human fraility shows through and people begin to disbelieve? poorly managed emotions? infections? demands for reward?
Sour grapes, the person scorned, self realisation, age etc. will bring the period of promiscuity to an end.
